Peter Smyth reacted to Quercus in LMG uk tour?
A live audience? That sounds like a radical departure.
Luke has recently been to the U.K. - I wonder what he thought of it?

I'd be down for travelling to London to see Linus tbf. Would love to go the pub with him.

Traveling to other country on their own expense? They just recently did that and I can't imagine them wanting spend company holiday in UK (no offense). For some event, sure. They've done it multiple times for PAX. But they still need sponsor for those. I don't think they will do live audience things anytime soon. They aren't that big yet. So something with audience would have to be part of some bigger show, LAN or other event. @nicklmg has verified another meetup in Canada coming at some point.

Peter Smyth reacted to LinusTech in @LinusTech Twitter Account Hacked
On June 28, 2016 the Linus Media Group domain registrar account was compromised.
The exact methodology of the "hack" won't be disclosed for obvious reasons, but I can assure you that despite any claims to the contrary, the appropriate safeguards were in place on our side, and as I type this Yvonne is having a very heated phone discussion with the 3rd party responsible for the breach.
Anyway, the thing most of you are probably wondering about right now is what this means for your forum account or personal information, and the answer is very simple:
NOTHING.
The "hacker" simply changed the DNS settings in the dashboard and did not at any time have access to the linustechtips.com server. Any claims of a database dump are categorically false.
The compromised accounts - including Twitter - have been restored.
I hope this clears things up.

Peter Smyth reacted to beavo451 in Networking Help
Can we get Linus to attempt to figure out how to link aggregate 4 10Gbps connections?
-
Peter Smyth reacted to brwainer in Networking Help
Pretty sure for at least one server he's already aggregating two 10Gbps ports, and the same between his switches. Switches with 10Gbps ethernet ports are still rathe expensive, and actually cost wise 40Gbps fiber is almost competitive with any setup where you would aggregate 4x 10Gbps ethernet.
edit: 40Gbps fiber is QSFP+, and you can actually use direct attach cables for up to a few meters length so there's no fiber at all

probably not.. just put a sticker on it or something

Peter Smyth reacted to KuJoe in Lan switch and POE adaptors
The PoE adapter (injector?) is used to provide power to devices through the ethernet cable so if your hub (switch?) required PoE then you'll need it. If you have another device on your network that needs it you'll need to plug the copper cable from the PoE adapter into that device directly.

Peter Smyth reacted to manikyath in Would this be a good Router?
if you're going pfsense specificly for having the vpn functionality, this router should be straight in your price point:
http://www.linksys.com/us/support-product?pid=01t80000003KqdLAAS
that said, as you've seen with linus's pfsense build theres a lot of issues with 1u, one of which you didnt account for: 1u is smaller than the rear IO on a normal motherboard, so you need a motherboard with slim rear IO.
EDIT: here's the router's pricetag on amazon uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-LRT214-Business-Gigabit-Router/dp/B00GQATOZ0

Peter Smyth reacted to .:MARK:. in Maximizing gigabit internet?
If on Gigabit, I suggest you upgrade your internal network hardware.
I recommend Ubiquiti EdgeRouter-Lite. Any Gigabit capable switch and some good Access Points (AC LR, AC PRO from Ubiquiti).

Peter Smyth reacted to brwainer in Maximizing gigabit internet?
Most consumer routers, and I believe even the Nighthawk, don't have the hardware to route at such high speeds. Switching on the local network and wireless are handled by specialized chips that can run at full speed, but routing goes through the CPU. The nighthawk line is really powerful, but I would think the CPU is still your bottleneck.

The corners have been intentionally rounded. While it doesn't work so well with your picture, it works with most people's, and fits with the design of the site better IMO.

Peter Smyth reacted to PetiteBob in Theme without material design?
That would be near impossible as this is a brand new version of Ip Board

Peter Smyth reacted to thatguyyouknow75 in Theme without material design?
I'm gonna guess no, we all will have to get used to it
-
Peter Smyth reacted to AlwaysFSX in Theme without material design?
Nope. Because it's all built in to the new software you're SOL.

I hate how the profiles are seperate from the posts. I also dislike reputation rather than likes, but love the fact that I managed to post in LTT Official claiming EA had taken over LMG, before the bug was patched.

Peter Smyth reacted to LogicalDrm in Theme without material design?
Not possible at all. Even stock IPB4 theme wouldn't work. Too much custom content and design. @Cat :^) can give more in depth reasons.
Why is any software/OS updated? Security updates, more features, easier management etc. etc.

Peter Smyth reacted to dzonidev in Do I need the Fiber?
What do you consider full fiber? Running your whole house with fiber cables or getting fiber optic internet?
-
Peter Smyth reacted to Trikein in Do I need the Fiber?
Where do all the ethernet comes together? You either have a patch panel or a switch/router connecting them together. When you find that, look at the ethernet plugged in. Their type should be printed on the wire. Also what model switch/panel? That also needs to be 1Gbps. Most are 10/100Mbps.
-
Peter Smyth reacted to Trikein in Maximizing gigabit internet?
The R7000 maxes at 931Mbps with almost everything turned off, even SPI.
-
Peter Smyth reacted to dzonidev in Maximizing gigabit internet?
Are you running any kind of firewall or filter rules or some bandwidth limiter. The funny thing is that all those routers are advertised that they achieve idk 2Gbps of pure wireless badass. However nobody mentions what their actual routing performance is. Also worth noting is that you should make sure the cable modem is in bridge mode and is not doing NAT or any kind of routing. Because that would cause a BIG bottleneck.

Peter Smyth reacted to SSL in Piano headphones
No, any pair of headphones will not do at all.
I recommend the HE-400S or AKG K612 Pro. HD600 might be nice as well. At least something without a ton of coloration, particularly fucked-up mid-range.

Knowing Linus, his kids'll be into Star Wars in no time. That'll be an awesome memento for them.
