  1. About 1/8 of my primegrid tasks are still waitting for validation, the oldest being from May 7th.
  2. I had that happen. I restarted my computer and it fixed it
  3. I'm all setup on 3 computers and I'm trying to get this working on my old cellphone (Samsung S9) I downloaded the app and got the projects signed up but I'm not getting any WUs. is this just not appropriate for a phone?
  4. Learning a little more about ZFS, still thinking of Z2 on the drives and the SSDs cache a l2arch/LIZ SLOG would be fine. Question; I was thinking of putting Proxmox on a USB drive, but I got that idea because of ESXi, should Proxmox be on its own ssd(mirrored)? would the VMs in Proxmox be stored locally or on a partition of the ZFS pool? also, I rewatched Petabyte project and I know that is above my aim here, but wtf did they do? was it each row of drives a VDEV, then each VDEV a pool... Brick? idk lol in my case, I would set up all 8 drives as one vdev and it would be one pool. that I would create partitions for my shared drives? backups, games, projects, VMs.
  5. Thanks for taking the time to reply! Well, I have at my disposal for consumer stuff 5 WD 3.5 2TB drives, 3 Adata 250 SSDs, Plus some USB 500gb/1tb drives. for Pro stuff I have 4 160GB SAS 15kRPM and 2 300gb 10K RPM SAS drives that I don't trust lol So Proxmox, and just put all the drives together? okay, in that case maybe I'll just buy 3 more 2tb drives to have 8, ZFS them in a Dell t710 or something. Now I'm not super familiar with ZFS so, would be do one vdev of RAIDZ2 on all them or mirror half in vdevs and pool them?
  6. I would like to be pointed in the right direction to figure out which Hyperviser solution would be best for my use (even if its paid). I don't know much about virtualization but want to get into it right, so I want to invest my time to learning something that is more on the professional side, rather than products like FreeNAS. I would like to set up my hard drives and SSDs in a manner that is done in pro environments. My aim is to get into using VMs and redundant storage on a separate computer other than my daily. I believe the best way for me to go about this is to maybe reuse my Dell poweredge server or probably just build my own server, with a hypervisor on the bare metal with VMs and Docker containers to do my tasks in a reliable machine that will also provide long term storage for photos, videos, work related files, chat logs, images backups and also bulk storage for video projects and video game libraries. [keep in mind I do plan to just buy the things i need, I'm not necessarily bound to using what I have so I'm not listing anything] My main goal, have one machine do it all. -To act as relabel and expandable "NAS" for my longer term storage for projects and backups (I do have proper backups, this is for convenience) -To have expandable faster general storage for video game libraries and open projects (maybe SSD cached?) -To have VMs that can be created and changed for w.e my next crazy idea is (instead of using a bunch of old desktops) Long term goal is to have this machine do all above and -To act and my network DHPC with a pfSense firewall running on a VM with dedicated pass through network card, which will go to a dumb switch and wifi access point. My current idea is; - To use Proxmox (as it supports containers) which will be installed on a USB drive. (IDK if this is the best HV for my use and want feedback) maybe ESXi 6.5? - Create groups of 4 or so drives on separate HBAs or to motherboard SATA to create groups of drives for my volumes (encase I want to physically move a volume and rebuild it else where) - Create a ZFS? volumes for use for my VMs, containers, Vswitches and experiments to run on, that will be redundant and fast - Create a volume (with ssd cache?) for bulk data like video games and open projects that is also redundant and open* for access to my network - Create a "super safe" redundant pool for long term storage for photos, finished projects and image back ups. that is also open* to my network (anything I really want to keep will be put on removable media as well) *I only use one PC for daily use, so I could mount these volumes to my desktop over the network I'm not sure if Proxmox has the native ability to manage drives or if people use RAID cards on top of that? I would rather not use RAID cards because I want the drive monitoring and the ability to rebuild the volumes on another computer if need be. Would I need to run a VM to manage my storage if Proxmox doesn't support this need? or would it all be better to just put all my drives together and make vpartitions for these volumes? though I am fine with having a couple HBAs to section off these 4 drives for "safe storage" and another 2 mirrored drives and ssd for general storage and 2 more for the VMS. Is it standard practice to pool everything together? what would you suggest? ~ Why am I doing this? I enjoy this stuff, but I'm not great at it. I used to have a Dell poweredge server set up before doing similar things but with Windows 7 on the metal and most the drives on a RAID controller with partitions shareable on the network... this wasn't secure and ended up failing. Now I run a bunch of single drives in a huge PC tower and USB back up drives, it takes up a lot of space in the office when you factor in a old PC running pfSense and another running a mail severer with some game worlds for family and myself to use. There has got to be a better way. Soon I will be doing away with my rig for something newer which will be in a much smaller case, so I need this data to be somewhere. Like many on this forum, I have been following LTT for a long time and seen their various means of storage, but it usually lacks details about what services they run on and why. Though I'm assuming most, if not all is Win server 2012. (I'm thinking of Petabyte project and such) this is where I get my inspiration. So in my quest to tinker and learn more about computers and servers my needs for safe storage and work machines has grown. Like the natural progression of the computer industry, running many physical machines for light tasks and reinstalling windows and such has become a ineffective mess.
  7. Yeah I know its not the best, but it is really better than any cable speed/price in my area. and I could up grade for more speed even up to gigabit. But cost per how much internet I really use becomes an issue lol but hey the ping is half that of the cable internet I used to have. Anyways this whole getting a server up and running and being able to play with friends is all a learning experience for myself. your input has been very interesting and I will be researching the different OS opinions you have laid out to see what will work the best for my application. be the easiest for me to learn and work with to achieve a working system.
  8. The Fibre connection is 50Mbps Down/ 30Mbps Up. which isn't bad for fooling around with the server with my friends. My router is a D-link extreme gigabit LAN with dual band wireless job, that is taking care of my network for now. Soon though I will be running my network with PFsene and only using the D-link as a wireless access. the switch that i have for all my wired connections (besides the server witch goes right into the D-link) is an HP 2524 10/100base. So if my server supports CPU virtualization, would you recommend just running Linux as a base OS and windows Vbox for the game servers? if so, what version of Linux? or would the latest Ubuntu copy be fine?
  9. oh I know buddy, I used to use the 1950 for Folding@home and yeah... it lives in the basement lol
  10. I believe its 2008 R2, but i'd have to dig it out of my dvd storage case lol considering jameshumphries47 suggested I use windows server it would probably be the route I will go.
  11. I could probably get any OS, I have win7 of any version on hand. and windows server 2008. and of course linux
  12. Dell Poweredge Two Xeon quadcore @ 2.8 (i think) 8GB of ram
  13. Hello everyone, I am planning using a Dell poweredge 1950 and my fibre internet to host a few game servers from home for the fun of it. I am mainly doing this as a learning experience so please no blasting me about how much easier and cheaper it is to rents servers. I know. =P I'm not sure what to do for an operating system for my server, I suppose I could use Win7 pretty easily or linux. I assume I would have to virtual box each game I want to host, but I'm just not sure how to start. I would like to run Minecraft, Dayz (OA mod), arma3, teamspeak and cloud my personal media to be accessed from other computers in my house and form outside my network. I've been told to "just run everything at once in windows 7" but I really doesn't think thats the best way to get it done. thank you for any advice or comments. EDIT: I've owned the server for a couple years now, it has two Xeon quad core @ 2.8 I believe and 8Gb of ram I could probably get any OS, I have win7 of any version on hand. and windows server 2008. and of course linux
