Having problems with the GPU in a new PC build. MSI gaming M7 motherboard, I5 6600, 16g ram, Win 10 64, Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970 connected to a 1080p monitor via DVI. Whenever i try to install the drivers through the Nvidia Geforce Experience, I get a message that says the drivers couldn't be installed properly because a restart is needed. I restart the PC and when it boots up, everything on the screen is there but unreadable. When I run Geforce Experience again, I get the same problem. The only solution is to shut the PC down completely then power back up. At that point the screen appears normal but Geforce Experience still says I need new drivers and i can't play any games. Acts like it's running off default windows video drivers. Hardware manager shows an ! mark next to my GPU but says the drivers are up to date. I've removed everything Gigabyte and Nvidia related from the machine, physically removed the GPU, started with on-board graphics to make sure everything was uninstalled, then followed the manuals directions for installing the card from scratch and I get the same results. Any suggestions?

We built a Skylake i5 machine with a MSi Z170A Gaming M5 mobo. Was meant as a gaming rig. Now it's being used more for video editing. Looking to upgrade to an i7 6700K to take advantage of hyper threading. Running Windows 10. Will I need to reinstall Windows?

So my new gaming rig is built on an MSI Z170A Gamng M5 motherboard. This board has 2 PWM cpu fan headers and three PWM case fan headers. My case is a Corsair Vengeance C70 and came with three factory installed 120mm case fans. I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo cpu cooler with one PWM fan. I'm planning to replace the three case fans and the cpu cooler fan with Noctua NF-12 PWM fans and add a second cpu cooler fan while am at it. At this point all 5 of my motherboards fan headers will be utilized. I'd like to add 4 more fans. Two pull fans in the front behind the front case bezel and two more push fans at the top of the case. Im looking into fan controllers. Id prefer a PWM solution so that I'm not constantly having to adjust fan spends manually. Ive looked at the Corsair Link solution but that's about it. Anyone have any other suggestions? Is the corsair link worth it's $60 price tag?

Finally got my new computer up and running. It's a MSI Z170a Gaming M5 with a Skylake 6700K and a GTX 980Ti. I've got a 240Gb SSD boot drive and a 1Tb WD Black HDD storage drive. I want to add my old PC's 1Tb HDD to my case, firstly so that I can swap over my Steam library, Pictures and Music. Then I want to format the old drive and set it and the new WS Black up in a RAID 1 configuration. Here's are my questions to the forum: 1- how do I go about configuring my old HDD, so that Windows recognizes it without needing to format the drive (like when installing the new WD drive under Disk Management)? 2- once the HDD is configured, and I've done the data swap to my new WD drive, how do I go about setting up RAID 1 between JUST the two HDDs, omitting my boot drive from the equation? I know that I'll have to turn on RAID support from my UEFI, but will that negatively affect the OS and other software installation that I've already done on the new drives? Also, will using two different types of drive negatively affect the performance of my system Under RAID? If so, then I'll likely add the old drive, swap the data I need from it then format it and use as simply another mass storage drive.

I'm sure this is a really stupid question but anyway I've got my new Corsair HX750i PSU for my new gaming build. I've got a GTX 980 Ti GPU that needs two 8 pin power connectors. My power supply came with either two or three pcie power wires that each have 2 sets of 6+2 connectors on them. Can I use one of these wires to run both 8 pin connections on my GPU or will I need to use 2 separate sets of wires.

Really wish I could. Our area has 2 providers. One is CableOne that offers my current 100MBs download/5MBs upload with a 400GB cap. The other is ATT&T that offer a 12MBs U-Verse DSL plan with a 300GB cap. We have a regional cellular provider, C-Spire Wireless, that is offering Fiber to the Home service across the state (Mississippi) that costs just $80 a month for 1GBs Down/Up with no data cap. Was offered last year to a select number of cities throughout the state. Ours was one of them. All we had to do was get a certain percentage of residents to pre-register for the service at a non-refundable $10 per household. Yeah, out of 9 initial city offerings, ours was the only one that didn't meet the quota. Sucks so bad.

Ok, I'm finally building my new Bad A** gaming rig this weekend. I've gone with an ssd boot drive and a WD black for everything else. I have my old PC's HDD that is still good and want to salvage my Steam Library, pics and music off of it before I format it to use as a third (dump) drive in my new system. I've backed up my pics and music to external storage so this is mainly about my Steam library. My cable internet plan has a 400 GB cap and I'm worried that if I try and download all the games I/we in my house usually play, that'll I'll eat up my allowance and have to wait a couple weeks for it to reset. I figured that if I hook my old HDD up, I could just move the steam library to my new HDD and that would save some time. Any thoughts? Will I have issues since there is an OS on the old drive? Should I just bite the bullet and format the drive now to avoid headaches?

Which PSU would you recommend? And why not the Corsair?

Region is US. I can download movies from any of the above mentioned services but they all require the use of their proprietary software to view the downloaded files offline. I'm searching for a way to watch them without the requirement of said proprietary software. In case, for instance, Vudu goes out of busines and their offline viewing software stops being supported. What then? Digital content isn't cheap and I'm trying to secure the life of that content. I'm one of those guys who converted his VHS and cassette collections to CD or DVD so I wouldn't ever have to rebuy the same movies or albums. Trying to do the same now with my digital movie collection.

So I've got all these digital movies that I've purchased using services such as Vudu, iTunes, Google Play Movies & TV, etc. I travel for work and like to watch movies on my tablet or laptop when I'm stuck in hotel rooms that have little or NO reliable internet. So far, I've had no problems downloading movies from whatever service and watching them offline through whatever proprietary app or program that is required. Such as the Google Play app or the Disney Movies Anywhere app for my iPad or the Vudu Movies to Go program for my laptop. My concern, and I know it's probably unfounded, is what happens when these services go belly up or just simply get out of the digital media business. Will I be left holding the empty bag of money that was once my prized digital movie collection? Or is there a way for me to save these downloaded movies in a format that allows them to be played via a third party media program or app. All legal like. Don't wanna get fined by the Feds.

Building a new system. Z107, I7, GTX 980 Ti, 16g ddr4, 1tb hdd, win 10. And that last one is the rub. I know that with an ots system, whatever OS that comes with it is tied to its mobo/hardware. While the OS can easily be changed/upgraded, the mobo/hardware can't. So here's the deal. Say I build my new gaming rig and in a couple years decide I'm not really happy with my original mobo, or cpu choice. Or say, a new and shinier cpu comes out that I've just gotta have, but it requires me having a new mobo. But I don't want to lose my hdd by having to reinstall my OS after the mobo switch. Does choosing OEM or Retail make a difference? Can I clone my hdd sans the OS and then import it into the fresh OS install? Or am I just grasping at straws. Admins, If this post is in the wrong place, feel free to relocate it.

Ok. So the motherboard I'm looking at for my new build (MSI Z97 Gaming 5) has a scant number of USB ports. I have a a usb mouse, usb keyboard, usb adapter for my wireless 360 controller, usb adapter for my wireless headset, usb printer. I'm out of ports. Is it feasible or advised to use the PS/2 combo port and adapt my mouse/keyboard to use it in order to free up space in case I need more usb in the future? Or should I just opt for a usb 3.0 pcie x1 card and be done with it? Opinions please.

Not sure if this is the correct place to be asking this question but here it goes anyway. VPN. What is it? Is it legal? Are there advantages to privacy and security by using a VPN? Can I use a subscription VPN service to access foreign TV/Websites and not get fined?

Got myself an off the shelf Lenovo PC. i3-2130 3.4GHz. She may not look like much but she's got it where it counts, kid. I've made a lot of special modifications myself. Namely, 8Gb of RAM, a 650w PSU and a GTX 550 Ti. I'm currently in the process of building me a new gaming system. Figure I'll give this one to my little bro but I wanna do some more upgrades before I pass it on. Specifically, I want to upgrade the GPU. So how much GPU can I comfortably get by with before I start to go beyond the capabilities of the CPU and other hardware. I'm thinking a GTX 750 Ti. Can I go a bit higher? Any suggestions?

Just curious. Why the X61 over the H100i or the H100i GTX?

So here are the three parts lists I've mocked up at PCPP for my upcoming PC build. All will use the same case, a Corsair Vengeance C70 in military green. Thanks to a tight budget, I've had to be fairly frugal with my parts choices. Each of these builds is designed for: 1- gaming with a Single 1080p monitor; 2- streaming movies to my 1080p LED TV; 3- general computing. No video editing, coding, or anything else. My current system is an ots Lenovo I3 with 8gb of ram and a GTX 550 Ti. Tried to run Firestrike and it couldn't. Ran Sky Diver at an average of 39fps. I'm building in anticioation of games like Star Wars Battlefront 3 and Fallout 4 and Ark. Again, because of budget constraints I'm trying not to use any credit cards to build this PC. With that said, set up one would basically be free. Setup 2 would have a CC layout of less that $200. And setup 3 would be between $300 and $400. My plan is to build this system and game on it for 3-5 years. Is there a way to access the FTP server via IE or Chrome without needing the FileZilla Client? Or any client for that matter? A direct line so to speak. I ask because my work as a public records researcher regularly requires that I have access to the files stored on my office network. But my only access to the Internet while in the field is often only a public access PC. Right now im accessing them through a Seagate web portal that is inefficient at best. I don't imagine local county IT administrators would appreciate me installing unauthorized FTP clients onto their systems.

So. New to the whole idea of FTP. Have watched a few videos. Read a few 'How-To' guides and I'm still mostly ignorant towards the subject. Here's what I'm after: I have a couple years old Windows 7 PC. I want to turn it into a file server. It's connected to my home network. I've downloaded FileZilla and followed the instructions that I've found in regards to setting up the server and forwarding ports in my router and firewall. Now what. How do i access the thing from my network connected laptop or gaming pc? For that matter, how do I access it from my work computer or my iPad or iPhone? Is there a special program that I have to use to gain access or is there something special to do with FTP://blah.blah.blah.blah? Help me LinusTechTips. You're my only hope.
