  1. Salt needed, Reddit based source. The guy that did this original write up on Reddit was obviously tilted at EGS before he even start looking into it. His whole write up sounds like someone who has a personal grudge and is looking for anything to make them look bad. They could have been uploading pictures of kittens and it would have been good enough for him. I'm not saying he's not right, but I would rather someone who is more professional and at the very least unbiased look into this before we take anyone out to burn at the stake. I did take a quick look through the .js file he uploaded and based on my limited programing knowledge, it looks like it is sending user data but it seems to be limited to web browser cookies, and browsing patterns from inside the EGS. As far as I can tell this is no worse than what something like Chrome would be tracking. Somebody who has more experience can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong.
  2. I don't know anything about the clamps, do you have one you would suggest?
  3. Let me rephrase that, the 350W PSU in the OEM doesn't even have a 6 pin, let alone the two 8 pins required just to boot with the card. Looks like I may need to pull a power supply from something else... Card isn't detected in ATI flash, and is not showing up in Device Manager. ATI flash and Device manager both detected the RX 480 no problem. From what I've read I need to make a bootable USB to force flash it but everyone says to disable discrete GPUs so I don't know if it will brute force the BIOS onto both cards or not.
  4. My friend sent me a bricked R9 390X and I want to try and reflash its BIOS to see if that fixes it. I've seen Youtube videos that cover it, but they all say to use a PCI graphics or integrated. I only have one GPU right now that has integrated graphics and its power supply is too weak to power a 390X. I also don't want to dismantle two whole computers to get this working. Is it possible to pop it into an extra slot on my main rig and flash it from one of the open PCIe slots on there?
  5. Bad example but not really; One of my friends was able to track down an,,, associate (not a friend really but not hated) based on nothing but his first name, the state he lived in and the colors that his high school used at their graduation ceremony. He not only found his full name and address but also found both of his parents and brother... this took him just one hour. I'm scared to think of what else he could have found with more data.
  6. If you are buying from a site like ebay there is really not much you need to worry about. If you get a dead CPU you can get a refund fairly easily. A lot of sellers are willing to work with you if you aren't happy as it will hurt their reputation if they treat you badly. I have a friend that bought a used 580 off of ebay that was artifacting and the seller told him to send it back and sent him a different 580 that worked. Ebay customer support will also side with the buyer if the seller is not willing to cooperate. Getting an actual dead CPU is rare, even if it supports overclocking. Just make sure you read the descriptions about the parts, sometimes people quietly list them as not working to try and get someone to buy it. As for a motherboard, is this one out side your budget?
  7. Instead of switching to a whole new ecosystem why not just buy an i5 for his system? If he is getting buy with an i3, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to imagine that an i5 would be a bad choice. Save some money on the motherboard. I would pass over the 590 as a GPU. If it is in your price range then a 1660ti would be a better buy, or if you can still get a Vega56 that is on sale. I don't know if that was a permanent thing though. You would also need double check that your power supply is up to a V56.
  8. This is the stuff that I use. It is some of the best stuff you can get and you can use it to redo the paste on your GPU as well. You can use this stuff as well but I started running into issues with it in my system not keeping temps in check so I switched. I would recommend the Thermal Grizzly above.
  9. These coolers are finicky, even if it looks like all the pegs are seated, one could have not caught. If one peg is not attached your idle temps are normal but load temps are high, if two on opposite sides didn't catch then your temps will be a little higher but not by much unless you are hammering the CPU then it will be much higher. If two on the same side didn't catch your idle and load temps would be high and your system would probably shut down. You should double check regardless because I suspect one of them is not catching. Your temps are at the level they are because you have imperfect contact between the cooler and the CPU for some reason. If it's not the pegs it is the thermal paste application. I would expect this cooler to hold the CPU between 65*C and 75*C.
  10. It sounds like your CPU cooler might not be mounted properly. If your idle temps are lowish in the range of 30-40*C and the temp spikes at 80 under mild load then you need to check the cooler mounting, most likely one of the brackets aren't seated properly. This cooler shouldn't really have any issue with a 3570 that doesn't overclock (if you are overclocking that changes everything). If you do upgrade the cooler, there are better options than the 212 at the price point but we can discuss that later if needed. The GPU thermal paste may be dried up which would explain your high GPU noise. The 970 is 5 years old now? If you feel confident enough to put a new cooler on it, you should be just fine putting some new thermal paste in. It is much cheaper and will most likely solve your problem. I was having issues with mine running hot and I dropped temps by 15*C just by changing thermal paste. I used Hydronaut on my cards which was worth the primium I paid. I was using MX5 but it didn't seem to be keeping up.
  11. Looks like the card performed right about where I expected it to, going back and forth with a 2080. I'm left wondering though since some reviewers are getting different numbers in the same games. I guess it's down to a driver issue like most of the other problems with this card, but it's weird how it can change performance numbers just because of a different system. Also Tech YES City has another weird issue with the card not booting sometimes if it's in the PCIe slot all the way at startup. I shit you not, that's apparently a thing that can happen... I wish AMD had waited a bit more to launch this card, but I think they were trying to get rid of this inventory of cards the had built up before they launch Navi. Maybe AMD wasn't expecting this card to sell that well at all.
  12. This is a double whammy I have a motherboard that refuses to boot with the power switch. It will boot if I trip the clear CMOS jumper, but then it fails to post even to the BIOS. I had this board working just fine a couple of hours ago and when I tried to put it in the case it started acting up. I have taken it back out of the case and replicated everything except the power supply and it is still acting up. Anyone have any ideas?
  13. Since the clock speeds of the CPU wasn't discussed, I suspect it would be a low clock Zen or Zen2. These would probably be the reject low bin parts that didn't make AMD's requirements for desktop CPU (craps out at higher clocks) so they sell these to Microsoft/Sony for less to at least make their money back. I would be floored if these CPUs broke 3 GHz. The IO controller would need to be modified to work with GDDR6 The GPU is probably a lower end Navi. I don't see a top end Navi chip going in there unless there was something wrong with the silicon where it wasn't good for desktop use. As for ray tracing, if AMD has employed those guys that were demoing ray tracing in 2016 then it's possible AMD may have approached the issue differently than Nvidia. Using a small dedicated IC would help lower power when not in use, would reduce fab costs since they don't need to make as big of a chip overall and could feed ray traced graphics back into the GPU during rendering. Probably won't be more than the RTX 2060 in performance though. The GDDR6 is probably going to be the most expensive, at least at first. If MS is buying storage ICs and a controller then they could be putting their NVMe SSD right onto the board. This would save cost since they don't need someone to make a stick, they don't need to pay someone on an assembly line to install the SSD in the system and the development cost would be on MS themselves. MS probably gets a discount for bulk orders or even an exclusive contract with a certain provider to only buy their ICs. I would put the system somewhere between $500 and $600 to build.
  14. There was a leak on the most reliable of all websites, reddit, about Microsoft's upcoming consoles specs and rough performance. The 'news' was quickly deleted from reddit but not before screen shots were taken of the post and later verified by someone who is connected to the projects (though this same person apparently claimed to know about the PS5 so take that as you will). The contact claimed that the hardware specs were 'partially true' but didn't comment further. They did say that ray tracing will be a thing on the consoles, which if true is huge for the technology and could possibly hint that Navi (which is what is rumored to be in the console) could also support ray tracing itself to some extent. I don't know what 'verified' means on that forum so this could all be malarkey. The specs seem fairly reasonable though and not far off of what has been speculated in the past. Supposedly there is going to be a more cut down version that is meant as a streaming box, but that was more questionable as some of its specs were way overkill for a streaming box. CPU isn't surprising and was suggested before that it would be Zen based, I don't know if anyone expected it to be Zen2 as I haven't been following that closely. GPU isn't much of a surprise either as far as I can tell. 16GB of memory is respectable, but how much of that is going to be used for GPU and how much for CPU. I'm assuming that they are sharing. That's very fast storage for a console but might be too small for a lot of larger games. May be able to add external storage as well. I know that most of the people on this forum are PCMR members and don't care about consoles, but if the ray tracing turns out to be true that would be huge in more ways than one. For starters, it would show that AMD is capable of ray tracing to some capacity and that it may be coming with Navi (assuming that is the GPU used here). In addition, as mentioned in the below video, it would also give an incentive for developers to leverage it since they would know that based on how many consoles sold, at least that many users would be able to use it. As with all rumors, this should be taken with a bit of salt. https://wccftech.com/next-xbox-raytracing/ Credit where due, I originally heard about this info here and he goes into more detail looking at the rumor.
  15. I saw someone having a similar problem with their ryzen setup and the motherboard was dead. Sounds like tou may have a similar problem. Do you have another GPU for a quick test?
  16. I'm all in favor of Nvidia being brought down a few pegs, but this is just dumb. Anyone could have looked at the stocks and seen that it was way too high to stay there. We all knew crypto was going to crash eventually.
  17. Is this why my server has been reporting aggressive port scanning lately?
  18. While getting 2 cards can improve performance in some games, it really doesn't make sense at the low end. Trust me, I have two AMD cards in crossfire and while it's not as big of a pain as everyone makes it out to be, there are a lot of little quirks that may require tweaking and tuning for games.
  19. As others have said, just use the integrated graphics for now and upgrade when you need to.
  20. It really depends on your workload, the would both go back and forth from application to application.
  21. I really don't think it's going to be a problem though. Like I said earlier it sounds a lot like it's an issue with the cards themselves and not the power supplies, but I'm not sure about the 970. It's still a power supply that I would have no issue recommending to someone as long as these little oddities are taken into account.
  22. I don't have any issues with mine running two 480s in crossfire. I'm wondering if it is just ASUS 970s or if it is all of them. It seems as though these are very specific use cases where it could be a problem. The Vega issue sounds like it is on Vega itself as it sounds like the PSU is just doing as it was designed to do. I typically follow an 80% rule when picking my PSU so that even at full load I still have overhead if needed.
  23. I had asked about the F@H Benchmark on the discord, but I don't listen and downloaded it and ran it anyway. I was actually able to find a modest overclock for folding and actually discovered that my 750 is failing certain workloads even at stock speeds. I wasn't able to get it stable even by cranking the voltage at stock, but strangely overclocking it didn't affect the resulting numbers that much. I also tried to set up my system for the folding coin to hopefully offset the cost of running my server that is folding. Is there a way to merge the points from my old runs to the points from my new runs for the team? The name is different but the key should be the same.
  24. I have a home server made out of spare parts that I use for game hosting, one thing you may want to look into is do any of the servers need a GPU to run. I host a DCS server on mine and it needs a GPU with at least 2 GB of VRAM just to open. Unfortunately the game has to be running to host a server as far as I've been able to find. If you are running an Arma server with mods then storage is a consideration you need take into account as mods eat through storage quickly. Another thing to consider is if you are going to be running the servers inside a VM or if you are just going to run them all at the same time on the main system. If you use a VM, you will need more storage (each instance of the VM would need enough space for the OS and the game in question) and you would need a LOT of RAM, 32GB minimum. Edit: You may also want to try and grab a cheap keyboard and mouse in case you ever need to get into the BIOS for some reason.
