Yongtjunkit reacted to LAwLz in Clicking "Check for Updates" in Windows 10 Makes You Download "Preview" Patches - Says Microsoft
In a recent blog post from Microsoft, we get an interesting insight in how updates are delivered to Windows 10 users.

At Microsoft, they have different tiers of updates.
B releases are the regular monthly updates, also known as "patch Tuesday". The second Tuesday at 10:00 am pacific time Microsoft pushes out a collection of security and feature updates to Windows user. This is the same model they have used for a very long time and it is fairly well know.

What is new however, is that now they also have "C" and "D" updates.
C and D updates are "preview releases" which gets released the firth and fourth week of the month respectively.
What may come as a shock to some people, is that if you click on the "check for update" button in Windows 10, Microsoft classifies you as a user who "seeks out" updates, and will push the preview C and D updates to your computer.

This is why, for example, only people who manually clicked on "Check for updates" got the 1809 update which deleted files on their discs. According to Microsoft, those users who manually checked for updates were "seeking out preview updates" and got pushed a preview update.

Here is the quote from the blog in question:

I am not sure about everyone else, but I have often clicked "check for updates" just to make sure I got the latest updates installed. I had no idea clicking on that button could potentially download preview versions of updates that hasn't been rolled out yet. If I knew that, I wouldn't click it.

Microsoft has re-released the update. All known issues related to data loss has been fixed.
That said, always make a backup, make sure all your drivers are fully updated  before upgrade (this includes: Audio, printer, keyboard, mouse, chipset, extra SATA controllers, etc). Make sure your security software solutions are fully updated, or uninstall them (beside Windows built-in ones).

You should always have a backup before doing any big upgrade, but the big problem was fixed.

Here is why you have a lot of learn, and taking random stuff online and blindly executing them causes more problems:
Disabling Background Intelligent Transfer service, will affect network transfer speeds. That means, that now, he will complain about how transferring files between system causes file transfer performance issues. Also, it blocks Window Defender from being updated, making him even more vulnerable that what he/she was. In addition, it also affects other programs using this file transfer protocol the service provides to do file transfers. This means that some apps, he might be using may no longer be able to transfer file, or do them at much slower rate.
Disabling Windows Firewall has 0 relation to Windows Updates. All you are doing is cutting even more the little security he has.
O&O Shutup 10 does things that are not doing what you think they are. Including setting registry values to settings that doesn't related, because they also ASSUMED instead of reading Microsoft very own documentation. Of course it is, as this app was a rushed released job, probably done by someone at the company on his/her free time. The quality of the app is not even close on par with other O&O software. The end results is that it affects your experience with your PC, causing you issue where you go "Stupid Windows" while in reality it your fault, for using crap.

Well unless you really need laptop i would advise you to built desktop pc as those are easily serviceable. You will also get much more power for the same amount of money.
Also they will most likely survive for longer period of time.Even 100$ ryzen 3 2200g has integrated gpu which is up 8x faster than gt 720m.

You know if you have any problems with new laptop, manufacturer dont bother to service parts, rather switch whole motherboard out as it is near impossible to pin point and fix any problems.Your pc is mid end old laptop. It shouldn't even work according to expected lifespan :D.It will never work properly ever again. It is just going to get worse.I dont know what else to tell you,if you want to keep using this pc,you should try to swap mobo if you can get it cheap.Otherwise there is no much you can do.

To be 100% honest with you I'd replace it with something newer if your having this level of issues, you can get a new laptop and save money by getting one with a standard HDD which then you can transfer across your SSD.

Of course not.Intel atom processors had problems as whole chip set as they were designed to run android and intel. So windows stop pushing updates to them, however they kept pushing out security updates.Your case is limited to maybe couple of specific configuration of old and cheap machines. In short nobody from asus or microsoft cares. As you can on asus website, where are just very old drivers.Your hardware is not longer officially supported, installing newer versions of Windows is on your own risk.Hell your nvidia gpu is officially out its lifespan, not supported since april.

This is the last one they reselased with support for you gpu any newer driver wont work.Next time get a desktop those survive longer and are fully supported by windows.

Assuming it will survive for so long,it will be windows 10 just without the newest features.Your pc is maxed out anyway it wouldn't get any better with updates. You don't need security updates.Just use common sense, downloading stuff from doggy websites and porn sites is never a good idea.

I'm not exactly sure if I understand what you're trying to do, but any executable that needs to access files will only run as quickly as the storage medium those files are located on. From your transfers above, it doesn't sound like your USB flash drive is fast, so I would recommend the local HDD or even an SSD if you have one.

probalby faster to run off a hdd, usb sticks are normally very slow. They also don't have much endurance normally, so it will die quickly running programs.

You have lots of small files that you are copying, its going to be very slow copying files due to the slow flash and the over head of copying small files. Seems like a normal slow usb stick to me. Get a ssd if you want it fast.

Yongtjunkit reacted to Atra1n2 in slow usb 3 transfer rate
It may be due in part to transferring a large number of small files. In these types of transfers you will see no where near your drive's maximum speed. Try transferring a single large file, and compare your speeds in that scenario.

Yongtjunkit reacted to kingknightrider in Nvidia GT 720M driver not installing
You can get around the issue with the driver install...
    Note may need Administrator rights.
Change the Nvidia Installation files' file extension from ".exe" to an archive format like ".zip" and open it.

The file now appears as an archive and lists multiple folders.
Then drag the folder "Display.Driver" to desktop.
Then go to Device Manger select display and choose update driver.
Choose to pick from files on computer.
Then select the desktop and the folder: "Display.Driver"
    Let windows update the driver.

Note 2: this only will update the graphics card driver -NO bells and whistles get an upgrade.

Had to do it this way when trying to update from driver 387.92 to 416.16 which led to complete nvidia installer failure.
I then checked in Device manager and says driver was released 10-2-2018.
So I am now up to date as of a week ago.

This is not the best way to install a Nvidia driver but when a bugged installer is given sometimes the only way around is a complete deviation of the normal process.

Use dx9 for that GPU. Also use the lowest settings you can bear within DOTA 2's Video settings.

Don't know about Dota specifically but the general rule of thumb is, DX9 for old gfx cards, DX11 for new gfx cards and OpenGL only for when DX/any-other-api isn't available or doesn't work correctly.
