Basing this on Linus refusing to follow a manual and using it on the wrong product?

We potentially destroyed a startup company because we were lazy and I was greedy, but we gave them some money, so we're all good. Also, we never contacted Billet labs before posting out scathing video, and now we're upset that GN didn't contact us.

So I looked around a bit more, and apparently (can't confirm this though) the Blue 1TB's have anti-vibrational material inside. I assume the versions with more storage don't have enough space. I also noticed that the speeds between 7200RPM and 5400RPM aren't as big as I thought they would be, and since I won't be running big software on it, it shouldn't affect things too much.

Guess I'll be getting a WD Blue 5400RPM.

Not the 1TB versions, at least the specific ones I had. https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Cache-Desktop-Drive-WD10EZEX/dp/B0088PUEPK

Well, I used to only hear my fans make noise when I was running the two WD Blue's.

I went back and had a look at your updates, sorry, I missed them in my last response.

Firefox is the most likely culprit here but due to it being a low privilege process, you can't directly set firefox as an exclusion due to the way it accesses this directory.

You have one option here that I don't fully recommend but believe it may help your situation: Set C:\Windows\Temp as an excluded directory in Windows Defender, but this also means that any other programs that use C:\Windows\Temp might no longer be fully protected by the on-access scanner.

Again, you posted this when I was in the middle of typing that post for you.

I'm not going to suggest that you change web browser, but the issue with Windows Defender seems tied to Firefox.

Assuming you don't want to change web browser or antivirus program, I don't think much more can be helpful here. Sorry.

When was the last time you cleared your history/cache in firefox out of interest? You seem to have quite a lot of data stored, and it's exacerbating the problem by having more to scan each time firefox accesses it's history.

Sorry, it's been a while since I used Firefox so I'm not sure exactly what is stored in those databases, and it's even just a guess since I don't know all the software you use - but it seems the most likely suspect.

MGsubbie reacted to Jasmin in How can I figure out which end of the connection is responsible for me losing connection?
All right, there's a couple of things I'd suggest:

    0. There's the simple things - check with the EA's FAQs/support for any blocked port ranges on your pc/firewall/router/modem. Playing on wifi in busy area? Is your switch/router firmware up to date? All the staples.

    1. Open command prompt, select decent ping destination (www.google.com is staple) and run a ping without time limit (so it would be 'ping -t www.google.com'). When you get dropped from the game, bring up the command line and see if you got any timeouts or unusually high ping response. You should quickly learn your usual numbers and spot outliers. You can also check if the ping response is stable- normally you don't want to see more than 1-2ms variance, if it goes above that, it may point to some issues.

    2. Get a hold of external IP for the game servers (if known that is - i remember blizzard and riot used to share theirs, not sure about EA) and run some tracerts without hop/time limits - see if any particular step has unusually high response time - check what it is. If you notice it across multiple tests, it is worth to report it to the ISP - it will be hard to convince them to take any action, but eventually they give in. Likewise, you can run the ping command for that server like in step 1.

    3. Use this http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/ - it's a uni of berkeley network analyzer - it will run an extensive test and potentially highlight some connection issues. One common thing is high buffer time set up by ISP, which can lead to random temporary disconnects. If you locate it, you can convince the ISP to change your settings.

    4. You can always move to the big guns, like Wireshark - but it takes forever to analyze its output buuuuuut it will let you know exactly whats up.

From professional standpoint i hate dealing with intermittent network issues, but these would be the first steps we take.

    Regards,
    Jasmin

EDIT: Ahhh, almost forgot - what type of connection is it? ADSL? DSL? Fibre? 5ghz? They all have their own faubles...

MGsubbie reacted to LogicalDrm in Question about fan curve for top exhaust fan
Considering how airflow works, you should have it using same curve with rear fan. Air doesn't move without something moving it. The fans in you case will work as follows:
Bottom and lower front will mainly feed GPU. Which then dumps hot air all over the case. Top front delivers air directly to nearest working fan. Which is first on CPU cooler. Top exhaust sucks air from cooler, but doesn't do it before 1st CPU fan. Not unless it spins significantly faster than 1st fan. Like 300rpm or something like that. Middle CPU fan feeds air to rear fan.

If the GPU usage in OBS cause performance issues, you could enable the integrated GPU in the BIOS and use the QuickSync encoder (Intel's equivalient of NVENC).

Get a good pair of regular headphones, a modmic 5 and an adapter to hook up both to your controller. (Alternatively connect it to your TV/monitor and just use the controller for your microphone.) I personally use the BeyerDyanmic DT 770 Pro and it sounds much better than any gaming branded headset I ever tried. The bass is incredible, explosions and gunfire really come to life. And I can really listen to footsteps to find out an enemy's location. It's closed off so good to use if you have roommates/a partner who could get bothered by you playing at night. Only downside is that it's not comfortable to wear around your neck at all.

MGsubbie got a reaction from DocSwag in Working on my first benchmarks, could use some feedback
Thanks for the advice. I decided not to go with 1080p because it's not a realistic scenario for a 1080ti user. I decided not to include too many synthetics either for the same reason. There are a ton of benchmarks by people who are much better at it than me that look at all of that. Those people tend to focus on tests where everything other than CPU power is as close as possible. For example Digital Foundry tends to pair their Sandy/Ivy Bridge CPU's with 2133-2400Mhz RAM, rather than what I think the average user has, being 1600Mhz. (When single threaded use reaches maximum, faster memory can help a great deal.)

I want to create a more realistic starting point for 2nd/3rd generation Intel users, Everybody knows that the theoretical gains from Coffee Lake are huge. I want to focus more on the gains that people get in games right now, to help them decide whether to upgrade now or keep their current CPU a generation longer/wait for Ryzen refresh.

    Hopefully this helps bud.

I just setup a quick "per usage" overclock with 4 or less cores operating at 5.1 GHz, 6 or less cores at 5 GHz, 8 or less at 4.9 GHz, and finally 10 cores at 4.8 GHz.

You'll notice that when all cores are used by any application, clock speed drops to 4.8 GHz.  When only 1 core is used, it scales as high as 5.1 GHz.  Pretty easy stuff.  Let me know if you have any questions or need help with it once you get your chip.  Good luck.

Yes, you can use any software monitoring app that lest you see individual core clockspeed.  You'll see that when your are running one or two single threaded tasks that the clocks are moving up to a max of 5 GHz if that's where you set it, but the second you load all cores at once, the clock will drop to 4.7 or 4.8 if that's where you set your 6 or less multiplier to.  I'll try to capture a video of this for you to help you out.

It's a fantastic feature and I assume that it's never part of reviews as it takes a bit more time to setup and test for stability.
