I totally agree with this point. Even without the 'journalism practices', GN should have gave chance to clarify and mend. If not he is just part of angry mob who can't commnunicate. Also GN claims that he is objective, but lots of points seems like subjective to me.

The question is, he said monetization for the original criticism video is off, but is monetization off for the latest video that also include LTT stuff? It seems like it's pulling views none like any previous video. Not to mention surge in YouTube subscribers. I can  sense ulterior motive here.

There are some allegations that needs to be sorted out, and it's LTT's responsibility to do so. But allegations are just that allegations, and we have due process to get to the facts.

Since Canadian Government and British Columbia has very strict laws on worker safety, I wonder why Medison didnt file for complaint to the legal authorities. She can still do so if she felt what she said. This would've been the right way to pursue this, not publish it on Twitter to raise a mob.

Linus and LMG is not perfect, but this angry mob is just getting out of hand. They are just angry for the sake of getting angry. If you dont like the content or the creator behind it, unsubscribe and leave. No one is forcing you to watch LTT.

How gullible are you? While it should absolutely be investigated, by what reasonable justification can you uncritically accept every single word she says without a second thought? "They have the worst workplace"? Perhaps, but you do not as yet have any evidence to substantiate that. Allegations are not evidence.

Actually a great response. Not going to get into mudslinging in employment matters online but she’s perfectly capable of legally pursuing the matter and proving it. OTherwsie, just another tweet in the wind

This is an old thing. i think this has been debated to the end, like also the sexual harrasment case (with that 3d print youtuber, i think she is called YU) there is no evidence in anything. there is indications, so this is completely different thing that what is being discussed here.

there is also always two sides, are the load too high, or are the work ethics too low. i think it can be hard to get to the bottom of this.

Yeah, but a low level employee creating a subreddit just to chat and vent for his fellow colleagues is very different from what was happening on the LTT subreddit.
In your example, it was some rogue employee making essentially a chat for his colleagues. Different scale, different levels of employees involved, different kind of users and so on.

What happened with the LTT subreddit is that:
People at LMG knows about it.
Most of the mods were employees at LMG, and those had higher privileges than the non-LMG mods.
Linus himself said that they would moderate the subreddit if they felt like they needed to.

I asked this question to someone else but I think I'll ask it to you as well.
How do you define "official" and "unofficial"? It bears their name, they monitor it, they have the most power over it, it is officially recognized and I am fairly sure it has been endorsed by LMG on occasions, and they are, in Linus' own words, taking responsibility for what happens on it. How much more "official" could it get?

But by being a part of it at all you make it your responsibility, at least to some degree. You can be pretty hands off and let them govern themselves but by holding power you ultimately assume responsibility for them. If someone posted something on there they shouldn't have and it caused an issue even if it was ultimately removed then the company could be held responsible.

If Google employees had an unofficial sub that the company knew about and had Mods on incase it got out of control and it came out that there was cyber bullying that caused someone to leave their job, or worse then even if the posts were eventually deleted and bans handed out it could be argued that Google would have been negligent by having control on the sub but not exercising it.

On the other end of the spectrum if it came out that an unofficial Apple sub had any mods (let alone close to half) on the sub even if they were only there incase the sub got out of control and the moderation was strict and deleting posts of people with complaints or issues about Apple then most people would have a problem with that and by having any mods on there at all many people would feel that Apple would have a level responsibility for the silenced opinions and issues.

Granted those are more extreme examples to prove a point but by having control at all you assume some level of responsibility, saying "but its unofficial" isn't a good enough excuse when you have power over it. Its not an issue to exist in this grey area MOST of the time; but ultimately you need to be ready for it to potentially bite you in the ass.

I think me and many others feel that if you have control over something then it's hard to argue that it's "unofficial".

    Google defines "Official" as:
Relating to and authority or public body and its activities and responsibilities.

Is the subreddit related to LMG? It is.
Does LMG have authority over the subreddit? Yes, because almost half the mods there are employees of LMG, and those mods have higher privileges than the other mods.

Is LMG taking responsibility of what is posted there? According to Linus, they are. That's the entire reason why they have mods there to begin with, so that they can moderate it. Even your own justification implies that they are going to take responsibility if "things to full on stupid".

How do you define "official" and "unofficial" if you feel like the subreddit doesn't fit the former but do fit the latter?
I feel like LMG wants to have their cake and eat it too. They want control, authority and responsibility, but only when it suits them.

For the subreddit to be unofficial, I feel like nobody from LMG would be involved with it. Once you start having employees as moderators, it's hard to argue that it's "unofficial".

Maybe you aren't aware but it recently came out that LMG staff are mods on the "unofficial" reddit.  And they have more permissions that the actual "unofficial" mods.  The "it's a totally different team" argument doesn't hold water anymore.

I think my main problem now is that this feels like a have your cake and eat it to situation, the sub is 'officially recognized' while being unofficial and has alot of LMG staff mods but because its not an official platform for them people seem ready to just say nothing can be done, its not official and its Reddit what do you expect. We can try to change things and voice our opinions from within the sub but when we get banned for doing so the only recourse I can see is to come to here to spread awareness of what's going on, official or not because its been officially recognized and there is a large LMG presence there is some responsibility for it; Or it could be fully cut off if they really dont want to be responsible for it.

Plus to me it seems like a smarter plan to put in a bit of effort to build out a better, larger volunteer mod force for the sub that can better act pre-emptively in emergencies then just keeping LMG staff on it on standby. At that point you have taken up the roll of policing it to some extent, you have the negative perception of paid LMG staff being mods, and because its officially recognized you get the blowback publicly if they do something wrong; pretty much the worst points of everything.

The middle ground where its at now seems like tenuis place to be if they go rouge and DOX someone or encourage people to bully them on twitter something, sure you have LMG staff on so they can stop that but how much of their time is spent watching for stuff like that? If they aren't watching for it but will just use it as a nuclear option once they find out about something happening then you still get all the blowback for the damage it would have already done, the internet wont give points for stopping a problem after it already happened.

I think if its truly unofficial and they dont want it on them it needs to be divorced from LMG as a whole, if not then some guidance is kind of in order to keep it being a place that doesn't make them look bad. the Mod whos post we are having issue with says they are effectively solo running the sub due to inactive mods and is likely what lead to the problem in the first place, A good mod team would have talked something like that over and would either not done it at all or would have at least worded things better (to sound more like what the Mod on here thought their intention was which was not to stop the discussion but to put them in mega threads and not allow new posts to clog up the feed).

I have no problem personally with specific topics that have largely run their course being relegated to a mega thread unless there's new info (with new posts being locked and pointed there, not deleted without anything really as to why or where to go if you want to talk about it) if thats what his true intention was. Its the deleting of posts and bans that I have an issue with.

I feel you man and I share your opinion on this. I think if, as Linus put it, they have staff on call that can intervene with the Subreddit in case of some potential scenarios (I really really don't understand their reasoning there but sure - it is what it is) they can also have the influence to at least publicly call out the other mods of that same sub for bad practices because I do feel like their voice will matter.

Given that at least on paper they are part of the mod team there they should and can influence decisions there for the better - if they want to of course.

Same thing happened to me. Mod there used a non-existent rule to ban me, and today even removed the top comment I had on the popular post "The real reason I think people are mad about the warranties" (my comment was the first one, had a net of about 800 upvotes at one point):

So really goes with the overall theme of bad modding with deleting stuff, banning and then removing any critical comments lol.

Just wanted to share, I can see that part of the community here and there really cheers the mod to proceed in this way. But here's the thing, next time when you have some criticism for either the LTT reddit mod or LTT in general it's your opinions that will be deleted.

    Just terrible overall.

EDIT: Just to clarify: I was permabanned not temp banned for a rule that doesn't exist in the sidebar (advertising - specifically: linking to other subs). Then the mod removed a top comment probably because he didn't like the criticism or me being able to edit a comment to specify the new development of mod banning people for random reasons.

What I refer to as terrible is the way the mod there handles this. And I also feel like it should be criticized since even if it's not an official community many of us part take in it, and with the backpack drama it has been acknowledged in the WAN show as part of the community that had a vocal criticism.

The mod there hindering critical discussion I feel should be criticized whether it's their own personal opinion or in any way influenced by what they feel is LTT wants.

As to why some of us may be using reddit in 2022 - lol - we've been using it long before LTT forum existed (some of us) and we find it a good platform for many things. I don't feel a valid argument for anything is "if you don't like something don't use it". I feel like if something was good and you used it, or if something seems good and you wanna use it, or even if something catches your eye and you try it out - you have the right to discuss if it's good or not good (subjectively of course).

    Cheers.

    I don't really agree.
Most of the mods on the subreddit are employees at LMG, and those mods have higher privilege than the non-LMG mods.

Linus justified it by saying they had to have LMG staff moderate the subreddit in case someone was doxed. Not sure the logic behind that but whatever...
It's hard to call it an "unofficial" subreddit if most of the staff is employed at LMG.

I saw he goofed up before I posted, but I wasn't referring to that. My point was that the Discord is promoted by LMG, yet they don't bother to actually moderate it properly, instead afaik it's more like the wild west.

So the whole argument that LMG is not responsible for the subreddit is true, because they don't run it. But even when they claim to run something, they still don't. So my point is that they need to be consistent, either they run the Discord and promote it, or they stop promoting it and only call it like a 'fan' channel.
