  1. There is little to no difference in gaming performance between those two motherboards - and many others that cost less than a third of the price.
  2. A bit pessimistic, no? SSDs have gone beyond 16 terabytes, and are growing. Yes, most people still use 1080p, because most people are not tech enthusiasts. They don't actively seek it, but as soon as they get beyond 1080p they will be happier. It is like people being happy with 480p DVDs, because their TV only supports 480p.
  3. Impressive! Held up well since you bought it, by the sound of it.
  4. I might have missed something, but I don't think you actually said what GPU you had? Only that it was second hand from a friend?
  5. Just to be clear, you are buying the X240 water cooling kit from EKWB, and the Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970. You also are buying 1 compression fitting and 1 2-way ball valve? What are those for?
  6. So are you saying that the computer isn't performing properly in games? If not, then why does it matter? If it doesn't perform, then make sure you aren't connected to integrated graphics, maybe.
  7. I have to disagree with that. I have tried both, and found that FreeNAS is easier to use than Ubuntu Server. The web interface of FreeNAS is definitely more intuitive for a new user than a linux command line. However, FreeNAS web interface is vastly inferior to NAS4Free - the sidebar in FreeNAS has duplicate labels to the menubar at the top, but each link to different locations. NAS4Free doesn't have a sidebar, making it much easier to find your way around it. However, the FreeNAS interface is more functional, requiring fewer drops down to the command line. I ended up using NAS4Free because I needed a more lightweight OS than FreeNAS as I was running it on 10-year-old hardware, but I found implementing ZFS on Ubuntu Server more work than I had time for, and NAS4Free worked fine.
  8. Preordering makes everyone else's experience worse. It isn't telling people how to spend their money, it is making sure that the ecosystem of good games getting rewarded with money is there rather than bad games with big hype making lots of money. It also gives rise to the kind of think Ubisoft is doing with The Division - they have a full DLC roadmap and the game isn't even released yet.
  9. I found this article about MJ's new Ubuntu tablet. Looking at the specifications, it appears to have a Mini-PCIe port (amongst other impressive specs). Does anyone know what this is used for? Is it pre-populated with a wireless card? and if so, why? Thanks
  10. Dell often uses Delta as their PSU oem - an excellent manufacturer. The bigger issue is the low wattage headroom, rather than the fire risk, as from Dell's perspective a fire risk is a much bigger issue than a few DIYers on an internet forum complaining about their designs.
  11. Are they even the same standard? Different standards use different voltages, so it seems unlikely that they will even fit in the same motherboard.
  12. GrokLearning.com is a good place to start - costs a bit of money, however. A free alternative is Codecademy - but the last I checked the newest version they teach is 2.7 - different syntax to the more modern (and easier) Python 3.x
  13. ECC is not any more important with ZFS/FreeNas than any other operating system. As long as the RAM passes a memtest, then it will work fine with ZFS. The only situation in which the 'Scrub of Death' (the FreeNAS forums horror stories) could occur is if you had RAM which always gives an error every time. Of course, for a data integrity-essential backup server, then of course ECC would be better - but that would require an entirely new motherboard, CPU and RAM so for equivalent performance would cost hundreds of dollars. Personally, I am running a backup server without ECC ram. It has passed 8 hours of memtest, so that is good enough for me, and given that the data is already in other locations and these backups are more for convenience, I did not see the need for ECC - especially as I got all the components for no cost.
  14. If you never plan to repair it, dunking it in a bucket of water is a last-ditch solution. Don't do this unless you have exhausted all other options, obviously.
  15. That's not the issue. We all agree that the server videos are entertaining and fun - its just the misinformation being spread through them. When server technicians like someone earlier in the thread watch these videos to see how their clients screwed up that is an issue. Making this information accessible is good, as long as it isn't blatantly wrong.
  16. Right. It seems I misunderstood the way that works. Thanks!
  17. After the SSD in my mac failed, I have begun looking in to proper backup solutions for me. I have come across the 3-2-1 rule - 3 copies, 2 different storage mediums and 1 offsite. Is there any way to implement the second step at a reasonable price? As I understand it, backing up to an online service counts as the online backup, the copy on my computer is another (local) backup, my NAS is a third backup (still local), but as far as I can tell that is only 1 medium. I use hard drives in my nas, presumably they use hard drives at the online backup service, and the SSD in my computer is still a hard drive (isn't it?). Is there a cheap way of doing this that doesn't evolve 10 blu-rays or a thousand-dollar tape drive? Thanks, sb
  18. Any of the coolers on this list should work: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/cpu-cooler/#h=14,124&c=30&w=0
  19. Yeah - I have 20 days left on my trial. How would you go about resetting the trial periods?
