  1. I'll be buying the parts starting next year. I'll be doing 3D architecture (large projects), animation (mostly 2D), digital painting, video editing etcetera. I'll also be doing a fair bit of gaming. I already have the keyboard, mouse and monitor but I'll need the OS. Thank you in advance!
  2. I want to put together a PC that I can use both for high setting gaming and work (3D modelling, rendering, digital art, programming, 2D + 3D animation etc). Included in the budget are: -The OS - I think I'll go for Win 7 and then upgrade to Win 10 in a few months, what do you think? -Keyboard - Anyone can recommend a good mechanical one? -Mouse - I don't need a high end one, just a regular gaming mouse. -Headphones - I'm no audiophile. I'm willing to spend about £30-£40 maybe £50 max and would like a recommendation (durability over sound quality). I already have a monitor (1080p 60 fps) and I'm willing to go £50-£100 over budget if it'll make a big enough difference. I'll be buying the parts this Friday (4th). Thank you in advance!
  3. I have a £1200 budget for my first PC build. I'm conflicted between spending it all on the build and spending a part of the budget on a laptop. This is because I wanted a laptop (below £500) that I can take with me to school or outside to write on, but if I'd spend it all on the build I would be able to go longer without upgrading any parts and have better performance. What do you think? Is a £1200 pc overkill for a student who's starting to learn game development/ 3D work/ animation? Or should I consider a cheap windows tablet instead of a laptop for writing?
  4. What if I'd buy a Windows 7 key? Would that work the same?
  5. I'm going to be ordering the parts early September, but I don't know what OS I should get. I read on the MS site that you can create a bootable drive with win 10 to legally use it on another computer, but is that only for PCs which already had win 7/8 or can I still do it for a new PC? If not, what OS should I get? Thanks in advance!
  6. I really want to make games, or at least anything visual/ interactive that tells a story (comic/ motion book). I really want my job to be a teamwork thing; imagining me with a bunch of closely knitted, diverse teammates sat around a table - in our small but cosy rented studio room - ambitiously discussing ideas for our project makes me feel all giddy and gives me butterflies in my stomach. It's a long winded goal, but it's there. I also expect us to have a group dog that one of us owns but brings in every work day. And I do mean every work day. Preferably a big adult dog from a shelter that doesn't have much energy so it's just content lying in its bed and being lovable while we work. My plans for my future may or may not be detailed in the wrong places.
  7. Woah, I thought all unis charge £9K? EDIT; Wait, is it because it's a college? Do those charge less for uni level courses?
  8. I don't mean renowned ones like Oxbridge (doubt I'm good enough to get in anyways) but ones that you've attended, want to attend, or know someone who's attended, and would genuinely say it's a great place to be in. Be that because of the city it's in, the campus, facilities, anything. It's still 3-4 years before I'd go to uni and I'm probably getting ahead of myself since this info might be outdated by the time I come to picking a university, but I like thinking about things early. I want to do a course related to games, so if you took one, even better. My top choice for now is Brighton University. Mainly because I love populated cities, especially ones on the coast. Plus Brighton seems like an energetic and fairly diverse place, and I also heard it's great for students. This is the particular course I've been thinking of: https://www.brighton.ac.uk/courses/study/computer-science-games-bsc-hons.aspx Thoughts? Don't be afraid to ramble!
  9. I've been into stories and story writing since I was 11. That's not much, since I'm only 15 now, but for me it's most of the life that I remember. At first I thought of books; then I noted they're not visual enough for my appeal. Then, since my genes decided to sacrifice my ability to jog 10m without panting in favour of my drawing skill, I thought of comics; then I've realised they're not immersive enough for me, and that one volume of a graphic novel would have too little story for the price tag without rushing the plot. I didn't even consider film, as 1,5 - 2 hours is too little for me (even though I am a movie fan myself) and the idea of film just doesn't click with me. I've ignored the little needle poking at the back of my head chanting 'games, games, games' and always hushed it with 'there is no way I can get a group of people to work with me on something like that; even if I did, the end result wouldn't be like I fully imagined because it's group work' and other excuses - rather good ones may I add - until now. So I shyly sit in front of my laptop, typing this up, wondering '. . . well maybe?' I'm not sure where else I can go to ask this question but here. I don't know anyone into gaming and game making - well other than my IT teacher but he is not the most welcoming personality - but that may be because I am in a small town and in an all-girls school. I do know a girl from my class into story writing, however she is not planning to go any further with it, she says it's not a passion. The only people I know with the same ambitions as mine are online, and that's not easy for a collaboration since I barely know them. I know there are thousands - no, millions - in this competitive industry, but is there a chance for me to make it? Oh, and sorry if I got anything wrong here or said something stupid; like I said at the start, I am just a kid.
  10. Thank you so much guys! I only joined this site recently, I didn't realise how friendly and helpful you all are. This definitely helped me; I can't wait to put this thing together! I'll go with the option of buying a better cooler later, and just using the standard albeit quite shite one that comes with the CPU for now like valdyrgramr said.
  11. I'm looking to get a PC build that will be good both for gaming (I play games like Skyrim and GTA V with lots of mods for graphics etc) with at least 60 FPS as well as digital work. I do 3D modelling and drawing on large canvases in programs like Corel. I use autocad also. I don't plan to overclock at least until the cpu would be getting slow with age and I'd need the extra kick. I'm planning to buy/build in September when I'm back from my holiday. I'd also like your opinion on whether I should get a curved monitor or not; I think it might be good for gaming but I'm not sure with digital work. Also they're quite costly so that's a debbie downer. As this is my first build; which sites are the best to buy components from in the UK (England)?
