TacoSenpai reacted to HarryNyquist in Why US college and university are so expensive?
This is why there's currently a trade work crisis in the US. No one wants to do plumbing or electrical or construction because you just HAVE to go to college to make money. Plus, it's not like trades are any more vulnerable to automation than white-collar work. Even if, in the future, we 3D print houses, someone has to hook up all the plumbing and electrical (and even set up the House Printer too).

Mainly because of government guaranteed loans.

Because of government guaranteed loans, students can borrow vast amounts of money they would not have been able to borrow otherwise. No lender would be crazy enough to lend so much money to a young person who hasn't even done the first thing in proving ever being able to pay it back absent government guarantees.

Students then turn around and bid the price up using that money. It's a vicious circle. If students weren't able to borrow so much money many of them would not be able to afford to go to college and colleges would have to slash prices to keep their seats filled up. But because the guarantees have driven prices up so high it looks to most ppl as if the guarantees are necessary and a good thing rather then the main cause of the problem.

A secondary reason is also the current mentality that everyone has to go to college. Standards have been lowered and ridiculous, completely useless, courses have been added to allow more people to make the cut, which adds to demand and drives prices up.
But many ppl just aren't college material and it's a waste of everyone's time and money forcing them trough a dumbed down useless course anyway.

TacoSenpai reacted to Anomnomnomaly in Facebook rebrands WhatsApp and Instagram to include "from Facebook"
I have been trying to convince people for years to abandon facebook/whatsapp/instagram and so forth... but the vast majority of people are lazy and incapable of functioning without them these days. I've given up trying to explain exactly what is going on with them and how they are attacking your very way of life.

I deleted my facebook acc some 7-8yrs ago... I deleted whatsapp the day after it was announced that facebook bought them. I've never been on IG... I was however on google+ when it was good (2011-2014) and had more than 5000 followers in spite of actively trying to discourage people from following me. But google killed it through a series of bad management that drove people away after Vic Gundotra left (one of my followers) and they finally killed it off earlier this year.

So I've been trying to get people to switch to telegram... and failing... all I get is peoiple whining that 'you're not on facebook/messenger' and so forth... and expecting me to do what's convenient for them... whilst being completely unwilling to do ANYTHING' to ensure they can stay in touch with me.

People in the tech industry... shun facebook and take steps to minimse any data they can collect.  personally I use firefox with the following plugins. ublock origin, noscript, privacy badger, ghostery, disconnect and the built in firefox containers. I also use a VPN. Certain sites are also blocked in my hosts file and/or at a router level.

I may not be able to stop everything sites try to collect, but I do everything I can to fudge the data they can scrape.

All I tell people these days is this 'If you understood just what they are doing, and the danger that poses to you, your identity and the safety of your children.'.. you'd never ever visit their sites ever again.

But still they do... and still they whine that they can't keep in touch because 'I'm not on there'

Easiest device to port it to would be Nvidia shield. Switch OS assumes a lot about installed hardware (Tegra graphics).

Switch emulation on the other hand, probably will happen sooner than the OS.

Switch hacking has gone from strength to strength, most recently we've had full blown Ubuntu, we've got retroarch, lakka and a list of homebrew so big I couldn't list it all even if I wanted to but the holy grail for lots of people is Android.

Hacking group Switchroot to the rescue, announced on Twitter the group hope to have Android out on switch within the next few days, albeit in beta form.

I personally can't wait to try this out, the Switch is a good console but it's an amazing homebrew device and having access to a full suite of Android apps? Count me in.

I'm pretty sure those imageboards contain all kinds both of the extreme left and extreme right. With extremely lax moderation ideas of all sorts can blossom, even those others or even the general public may not agree with. Sites such as 4chan and 8chan are a dual edged sword. Even with slight moderation, you can easily introduce religious, political, and other idealistic bias for conversational topics, preventing truly free speech. On the other hand, having no moderation, you're allowing potential for conversational topics and media to allow the promotion and sale of sexual and physical abuse.

Good thing I switched to Firefox in time. I knew there was a power play coming - that's what we get when everyone uses the same product from a megacorp. Firefox has its issues though, not least of which the browser itself is huge and resource hungry - I hope a new competitor rises soon, or at least someone repackages the Firefox engine into a more wieldy solution.
I've been using Firefox on my phone for a while, I'd say it's fast enough - if you haven't tried it recently I recommend taking another look.

Brave is on their own fork. I imagine Edge will be too (if not already) since MS want more control over it, any half decent browser is just going to jump off the official branch that advertise their built in ad-blocking. so this will only really affect chrome, which i refuse to use anyway

ive been thinking maybe we should start going to 8chan not to attack the people there in fact that would be quite detrimental to what i want to achieve but to just share our ideas. i think that a big reason why the shooters became like that is because they are in an echo chamber which creates a feedback loop giving them more and more extreme views so we need more moderate people on 8chan

TacoSenpai reacted to PlayStation 2 in Why are so many people against consoles?
I wanna chime in a little more on why consoles are very appealing to more people than a PC is:
Ever tried using a controller on a PC? Unless you're using a Steam Controller (in which if you are, you're fucking insane), it's almost impossible to do normal things unless you're running specific things that do support controllers, and that usually doesn't include browsers. Yeah, there's things like Kodi and Steam's Big Picture mode, but coming from someone who's used the latter, it can be very clunky and kinda slow even on good hardware, especially the browser.
On a console, you can do just about everything with just the controller. And lemme tell you, that's far more preferable compared to having to use a mediocre game launcher to do web browsing with a controller.

This is a good thing.  Computers have become more like cars.  Like... sure you CAN get a supercar to drive on the expressway to work... but a budget compact will get you to the same place at almost the same speed you're going to drive at anyway.

    The technology has matured.

The days when a computer that was two years old literally could not do the things a new computer could* ended .... in the Early 2000's or even in the late 90's.

You're in the same boat as me. I was already super hyped for Ryzen 3900X, but after digging around a bit, my gaming framerate is just 10-15fps lower on 5820K compared to 3900X running at stock speeds. 5820K stock is 3.6GHz when single thread turbo and 3.4GHz on multithread. Mine is running at 4.5GHz all core and I have a golden sample that achievs that at just 1.175V. Which essentially closes the gap to single digits. I don't need absurd computation power so 6 cores and 12 threads at those clocks are plenty. Memory is quad channel so I have plenty of that too and it's 32GB total capacity. I already have GTX 1080Ti so I run basically everything in triple digit framerate as is.

So, total platform upgrade, 3900X, 32GB RAM and X570 board would cost me 1000€. And in the end I'd ultimately make nearly zero performance improvement for my needs (mostly gaming, ocassional data compression and encoding of videos and music). As much as I'd love to go with AMD, it's just a waste of money in my case. I'll rather buy new graphic card in coming years with the difference I'll save up here by not upgrading CPU.

I really overbuilt my system back then and it shows. It's 4-5 years old now and it's still running everything I throw at it with ease.

I don't see the GTX 1080 or i7 5820K going totally obsolete anytime soon.  Ryzen was a big jump and shakeup and we're beginning to see the results of that but even for video editing an R5 or 6 core intel are plenty enough.

I have an X370 board as well, Gigabyte says mine supports the 3900X so I might see about trying as well. I'll let you know if mine blows up when I get my CPU. And I think all you would lose woulde be PCI-E Gen 4. Most of the reasoning for the active cooling on those boards.
