TacoSenpai reacted to justpoet in “Everything as a service” is coming—but we’re not there quite yet
If I can't buy it and keep the data on it to myself, I'm not interested. Privacy matters.
Yes, I know I'm the minority, which is sad.

TacoSenpai reacted to The_Prycer in FACT: Smug Anime Girls are the superior avatar
There simply isn't a better avatar for forums, games, discord, or any other non-professional setting where a smug anime girl does not make the perfect avatar.
Look at the derision on her face. It already lets you know that your opinion is not valued, you automatically feel defeated in arguments against the sheer SMUG.
The absolute dismissive nature of the Smug Anime Girl tells you that any attempts to engage in argument will be futile as the giga-chad energy being radiated from the wielder of the smug is simply too much for any jimmy rustling to occur except in the case of a smug-er anime girl appearing.
YouTube comment section got you down? Smug Anime girl is there for you to let you know only your opinion matters
Going to a forum just to have a good time, but feeling personally attacked? Smug Anime Girl is there for you to attack back
Want to do some light trolling? That's right, Smug Anime Girl is there to give your online voice the perfect level of disinterest and mockery necessary

TacoSenpai reacted to Taf the Ghost in Parents Don't Like Phones At Schools
A couple of thousands of years of education existed before cellphones, and the modern ones really are mostly distraction devices. So, at one level, they get in the way. On another level, they actually serve the major purpose of modern "education", which is really just housing students for 6+ hours a day.

If you end up not having any luck finding them online or direct from the manufacturer let me know. These look simple enough and have the tolerances to be 3D printed.

TacoSenpai reacted to Fire2box in Cloudflare terminate 8Chan
Cloudflare is 100% in their legal rights to drop 8chan as a client.
but they might want to delete this. July 09, 2017 4:29PM We at Cloudflare strongly believe in network neutrality, the principle that networks should not discriminate against content that passes through them.
Just as Samsung has deleted the ad's making fun of apple removing headphone jacks.

IMHO, Google has been broken ever since they removed the option of disabling the search-bubble and removed the ability to do SQL-like syntax for searches. *grumble grumble*

It's not just Google, it's happening across Silicon Valley.
My mother works for a county a hospital (not gonna say the name) and top executives are just bailing left and right. It's gotten so political that people have forgotten that at the end of the day, this hospital is still a business. Despite all of its write offs and government subsidies, there is a lot of fraudulent behavior happening due to political standing about immigration and whatnot that is hurting this hospital. The people being replaced are incompetent and are only being hired for political reasons too. It's a sinking ship and very sad to see this type of behavior being practiced.
Anyway, I hope Silicon Valley has a reset. Too many dumb people playing dumb politics.

The fact they put it there in the first place screams "this is going to end badly". And it has.
Though, as a practical matter, the really important Google products they listed in the quoted piece are all very "old" at this point. That's actually been Google's biggest problem for nearly a decade: they are just finding more ways to monetize things. The company is no longer in a market where they're exploring new things, thus they are fighting over internal sources of power & money. Frankly, it's the life cycle of any Empire. The conquest & expansion phase has ended, thus the "long knives" are out for everyone because it's about internal political divisions.

TacoSenpai got a reaction from Ithanul in Why US college and university are so expensive?
The long term effect I think we are about to see (if we haven't seen the short term effects of it) is that the whole purpose of higher education in a centralized institution was that you had to go to these places because they almost exclusively held the knowledge. With the internet as big as it is and online learning as prevalent as it is (also cheaper mind you) I'm not sure that is so much the case anymore.
I can think of very few things that outright require a 4 year college degree (i.e doctor, engineer, lawyer).

TacoSenpai reacted to Delicieuxz in FBI seeks to monitor Facebook, oversee mass social media data collection
I think the government has these things planned for a long time and then just waits for opportunities (or creates them) to use as excuses to put them into practice. Putting Facebook under the official (as in, no longer secret) monitoring of the FBI could just be phase 3 or 4 in a series of implementation stages that have been planned since Facebook launched in 2004.
Edit: @Taf the Ghost appropriately brings up the US government's Total Information Awareness program - which wasn't in-practice ended but morphed into the basic operational philosophy of US intel agencies, and which I would say that all the tech giants are willing participants in.
Facebook already is an extension of the US state and NATO, with its content policies being directed by Atlantic Council, which is the terrorism-endorsing information warfare (AKA propaganda and disinformation) branch of NATO.
I also think that Facebook's parallel's to the US government's Lifelog project can't be ignored.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA_LifeLog
Google isn't too different:
Google’s true origin partly lies in CIA and NSA research grants for mass surveillance
How the CIA made Google
As I mentioned in this post, all data harvested by US tech giants is ending up in US government servers and in virtual profiles of every person to create a god-view over society.
