    Assume its a Dell PERC5/i

They are $10 because they are OEM in Dell servers that use the 771 socket (anyone running a 771 in production should be fired) so there are literally thousands of them that have been thrown in the bin (along with the servers they lived inside) they are useless in a corporate environment and have been superseded.

I use one for my 4x500gb raid. from memory it uses sff-8484 cables (SAS-host side and SATA-target side) my calbes are "backplane" cables and they work fine going straight from card - > drives (no backplane)

    a few catches.

    1. It adds significant time to the boot cycle (its a server card)
    2. the card can only achieve 1,000mb/s as the backbone of the card is PCI-X
    3. pretty sure its SATA2
    4. unsure on compatibility with drives over 2tb
    5. you will need to cool it somehow. I mounted an old northbridge cooler on mine
    6. you need to scrape off/damage/block two of the PCI-E pins to allow it to boot on Intel motherboards (guides online, very easy to do, I use a PCIE extender so I just pulled the pins)
    7. you will need to somehow mount it as the server cards have no "slot" brackety thing for a normal PC case.

I use mine for RAID-0 however I am sure its RAID-5 performance is quite good, it will be more than enough for media streaming.

LinusTech, Can you PLEASE do some more unboxings, I'm really starting to miss them. I get that you're doing a lot of new content and trying out some new things, but I originally watched you for unboxings, and I miss the experience quite a bit. I also don't want to be that guy (lol) but I feel like you're slightly loosing track of your roots. I mean I really do get the whole situation you're in, branching off and starting your own media company and all that jazz. You need to make income somewhere and I get that, and I can only imagine how difficult it is to start a company in an area as unique as technology videos, but a lot of your videos lately have felt like product ads and don't seem the have the enthusiasm you used to have when opening up a product. I mean I can sit and give you my opinions all day, but the direction you go is ultimately up to you. I just wanted to voice my opinion after your WAN show comment that you haven't done an unboxing and nobody seems to care, I have personally noticed and do care.

The D1 in particular, as well as either the A5+ or A2. I personally have the A2's and they are just perfect for the price. The A5+'s are their flagship, which is why he might like to take a look at them, and the D1 is a very cheap very versatile Dac, again a product I own. I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to speakers and for the price these are the first speakers I've been ok with, so thats why I'm so quick to praise

I think Linus should unbox any of Audioengine's many products. I think he'd really appreciate the build quality and pure usefulness of all their products.

Very sorry if this is a dupe, but the LTT search is kind of terrible at the moment, and a google search brought up no results. Since we all know (and linus has even said) that the Total Biscuit shut down of his day one: garys mod incident would be a topic on this Friday's wan show, I'd like to formally request that linus pushes back this weeks planned guest and brings TB back for Friday to talk about the incident and get the story straight from the horses mouth as they say. Since TB seems to be a huge buzz right now around the web, having him on the show to talk about specifically copyright issues would very likely also promote viewership for the WAN show as well, since people would love to hear TB's thoughts about everything, especially live. Just a suggestion though, but I know I for one would love if this could happen.

Please Please Please do one about cores vs threads. Whats the difference and how it effects performance. People need to know their 8 core AMD might not be as fast as a quad core i7 just because it has more cores, although I have trouble explaining it because its a strange concept.

so this one time I was hanging out with my friend who is the manager at a tech shop by where I live and a girl comes in and buys a 2tb hard drive. we let her know that we install hard drives for $1 (the cost of the sata cable we use) and she says "just because I am a woman does not mean I cant work on computers" and leaves in a huff. two days later she comes back in saying that the HDD is not working so we take the computer in to look at it, we open it and the HDD is nowhere to be seen, so we ask her where it is. and it turns out that she scanned it and put the scanned image on her desktop to install the drive. and to top that off she threw away the drive she paid almost $200 for and she wanted us to give her a new one.

For what you want, as much as I hate to admit it, the Macbook pro is probably the best option. If you can afford it. As and alternative I'd recommend Lenovo as I've had a Lenovo g560 since 2009 and I also do video, photo and web design work on it, and it's my main machine (I badly need to upgrade) but for what you want the newer models would keep up pretty well in my opinion.

So I have a large number of sata hard drives just lying around my house, all different capacities, brands, etc. I want to set up a new central back up for all my computers along with my room mates, so I was thinking of setting up a dedicated computer running windows 8 (since I have a couple extra copies) and setting up a storage spaces running parody. I would then hook this drive up to the network to back everything up to. My questions about this are first will this even work? This seems to me to be the most cost effect method because I always seem to end up with old hard drives, but they only total about 1.5 TB. Would I be better off shelling out the extra cash for a NAS and loading it up with a couple 2 or 3 TB drives and just calling it a day? If that's a better option can you recommend me a good cost effective NAS, something around $350, which is how much building this storage spaces machine would cost. Lastly if the windows 8 option would be the better one, how would you recommend I get enough sata ports to effectively connect all my drives. I was thinking about eventually getting a rack-mount case to get more space, once I get more drives. Right now I have about 6 drives, and an old desktop case that is sufficient for now, but once it grows I know i'll need more space, but most motherboards don't have a crazy amount of SATA ports, so I'm not really sure what the best way to add more ports would be.

Anyone else think this is seriously the best forum in the entire world? I've never been afraid to ask any question on here, no matter how dumb I think it is. I think this forum could become the new standard for tech Q&A simply because you can ask anything you want to know without fear of ridicule. Plus every time I've asked anything I've gotten a response within 2 minutes tops. Its just the best community on the internet, hands down.

I might be the only person who feels this way, but I thought I should still share my personal opinions. I started watching Linus a very very long time ago. The first video I actually watched from him was his unboxing of the Razer Mako speakers, just to give an idea of how long ago that was. I am so very very happy to see the LinusTechTips Channel maturing into what it is today, but at the same time I can't help feel a bit nostalgic for the way his videos used to look and be. I thought about what could possibly not be better about his videos from how they used to be, and after a long time I realized it was how staged the videos seem now. Obviously Linus did research into any product he unboxed, even back in the first LTT videos, but they always seemed to be a learning experience for both Linus and the viewer, like discovering something together. The only point I want to make is I want Linus to watch how "Professional" he's videos become, not in terms of aesthetics and quality (Better quality is always better) but in terms of how "tech showy" they look. Linus always had that unique way of teaching about a product without you realizing it, something no other tech show I feel ever had. I just don't want his show to become the same as all the other tech shows online, I want it to stay "Linusy"
