    They are working on a smaller version, I don't think it will be that small. it is, however, being worked on & will release eventually™, you can take that as a 100% TMB Guarantee.

    Hi there!

    I remember them talking about a smaller version, but the "standard" size seems gigantic 😂😂 that's why I'm mentioning it as a mini, going even smaller than 15" laptop.

    The current iteration looks really nice but I'm 5'2 so it would look like the backpack grew legs 😂

    Yup this works fine, I'm doing this on proxmox currently without issues.

    Basically the hypervisor makes a virtual switch inside the system that works just like any other switch.

    If you want to try , go ahead, its not too hard to setup. Just be away its a bit more annoying to fix, and if the nas goes down, the rest of the network goes with it.

    These don't mix that well. If you want to use the space of mixed sized drives, you can't use raidz, so take your pick of zfs or using all space in mixed drives.

    Hi there, thanks for replying!

    Does it need to run on proxmox? I am not familiar with it. How flexible is it in terms of allocating resources, I.e. I the NAS needs more power to run a game server for example?

    Does using proxmox necessitate virtualizing both the router and the NAS?

    Is there a possibility to run pfsense/ nas on bare metal, with virtualizing just the other thing? Or would that run into issues with hardware resources due to lack of ports?

    I think I read somewhere that unraid has a pfsense plugin, but although it should support ZFS now as well I am not sure if and what limitations there are.

    Also I read on the Truenas wiki that mixed size drives are allowed but will be limited by the capacity of the smallest drive. Is this true in addition to not being able to use raidz?

    What I recommend is not virtualizing pfsense as a first attempt at using it, virtualized firewall makes everything a little more difficult and confusing, and it’s already confusing and not that hard to lock yourself out of your network or the internet, or both.

    If you do go that route, I’d get a dual port PCIe NIC, pass that through proxmox to the pfsense VM. One of those ports will be WAN, one will be LAN, just like a normal router. From the LAN, run that into a switch, now you have a standard networking topology. From there, you plug your proxmox hosts mobo Ethernet port into the switch, so now proxmox itself is acting as if you had a router out on the network (it doesn’t know it’s actually going mmmmmm hosting the firewall…).

    This way you don’t have to deal with virtual networking.

    Hi,

    I'd love to go that route but I have a single LAN port ITX board, and a single SFP+ 10Gb NIC. The hardware is already selected and bought, and the router I plan to get only has one SFP+ port as well.

    Is it possible to avoid virtualization some other way?

    As pfsense is based on FreeBSD, is there some option to run a NAS VM with pfsense as the host?

  4. Hello there!

    I need some advice from people who are more knowledgeable about networking than myself.

    I got a second computer that I intend to use as a NAS:

    Mini-ITX B550 board, 4-6 SATA drives, 256GB NVMe SSD, Ryzen 4300G w/ Radeon graphics, 16GB of RAM, Realtek 2,5GbE onboard and 10Gb SFP+ NIC from SuperMicro (2 network ports in total)

    I plan to run this machine 24/7, battery backed up, at my new place, and potentially host some game servers for my friends (public IP TBD, 1Gb symetrical internet).

    However all things considered it will be stupidly overpowered for even the most demanding streaming and encoding workloads.

    So I started thinking about also using it as a router as well using PfSense, but I need help on choosing the OS, the topology, and the configuration.

    My requirements are:

    - ZFS raidz1

    - mismatched drives (at the beginning I plan to reuse old hard drives that we have laying around, mostly 1TB and 2TB capacities, potentially 1x 4TB drive in my primary PC)

    - ability to access the NAS remotely via VPN

    I started looking into the options and it seems like there are two main options:

    1. UnRaid with PfSense in Docker

    2. PfSense and TrueNAS virtualized in Proxmox (not sure I understand this correctly, feel free to let me know)

    In terms of topology, I was hoping something like this would be possible:

    fiber modem -> 2,5GbE port as WAN -> 10Gb SFP+ port as LAN -> multigigabit Zyxel switch -> PC, Wifi AP, projector, Apple TV, Sonos speaker etc.

    My concern is that I am not sure if this would be possible on a single machine, where the "LAN out" port on the router also works as a "LAN in" port for the NAS? Is this something that could be achieved?

    What would be a good solution for someone who wants to try going this way but is by no means a networking expert?

    Should I just get a decent dedicated router and not bother complicating my setup?

  5. Hi, I'm sure it was asked before but can't find any specific topic right away. Sorry about that.

    Will you/have you considered making a smaller version of the LTT backpack?

    Say something designed for a 14" laptop/11" iPad?

    Something similar to this for exxample? https://www.amazon.sa/-/en/Delsey-Unisex-Dailys-Luggage-2030612_noir/dp/B07NC71FQT

    Is there something in the works for someone who wants to upgrade in the ~20L size?

    Best,

    I honestly don't think you will be able to hit 40CAD a month from any of the big guys. Freedom mobile has 8GB data plans for like 40 bucks but if you ever leave the cities it's like 3G coverage or no coverage at all. In cities they have 4G.

    Yeah that will not be possible apparently. I use music streaming and Instagram quite a bit so 8GB is the bare minimum.

    How do the plans work from someone like Bell? Are all the regular plans on a 2 year contract or is there a possibility to get a plan without a fixed contract? Or is my only / best option a prepaid plan? I'll only be there for 4 months.

  7. Hello there!

    I'm considering retiring my beloved NuForce EDC3s for a true wireless pair and I'm deciding between the WF-1000XM4 and a potential Airpods Pro 2 later next year hopefully.

    Is there anyone using the Sonys with an iPhone? How is the experience? Do the things like battery indicator work okay or are they locked out?

    How is the tuning? I'm mostly into "neutral" tuned earphones - no bass increase or stuff like that.

    Thanks!

  8. Hello there,

    it has been a hot minute since I was here last, but I figured that there's most likely someone who can advise me.

    I'll be going on a study exchange to Vancouver at the start of next year and because I only have one kidney left after paying for the flight tickets I need a reasonable mobile plan with lots of mobile data, preferably 5G.

    I'm completely lost in what options there are so I will be grateful for any recommendations. I'm hoping to mainly use data, and would like to stay below 40 $ CAD if that is at all possible*.

    I was hoping Ting would be an option but it seems that is only in the US.

    Hit me up!

    *side note: They say Czech Republic has some of the most expensive mobile data out there but Canadian prices suuuuuuuck

    Are you sure that autoplay and autorun are enabled?
    Enabling autorun/autoplay is bad idea security-wise.

    You could force it to be enabled via group policy.
    https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-disable-autoplay-and-autorun-in-windows-10/

    If you have time, prefer to detect the device dynamically with C# using InteropServices.
    https://www.codeguru.com/columns/dotnet/detecting-usb-devices-using-c.html
    And you can execute the batch script or even customize it yourself.

    It probably could be done if I knew any programming at all.

    I found a solution though: I looked up the event ID and source when the external SSD gets plugged in, then I used that as a trigger in Event planner to start the copy "script" stored on the external SSD.

    However then I was running into an issue where if I plug in another external drive, it starts the copy if the external SSD is still connected. I solved that by making a more detailed filter for the trigger event as shown:

    <QueryList>
      <Query Id="0" Path="Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs/Operational">
        <Select Path="System">*[System[Provider[@Name='Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs'] and (Level=4 or Level=0) and (EventID=98) and TimeCreated[timediff(@SystemTime) <= 10000]]]

        and

        *[EventData[Data[@Name='DriveName'] and (Data='W:')]]</Select>
      </Query>
    </QueryList>

    I found out how to do that here.

    This way the event "Import laptop backup" only triggers when the external SSD is inserted, and it ignores any other (NTFS) external drives.

  10. Hi,

    I need some help with my backup.

    My situation: I have a laptop and a desktop with a large hard drive for storage. I periodically backup the laptop to a portable SSD using Acronis and differential backup.

    I want to have an automatic solution to copying that backup to my desktop. I know this can be done with a robocopy script in a .bat file and an autorun, but I'm not sure how to make it work when I plug in the drive.

    I would prefer to avoid a solution requiring other software.

    I tried to modify a solution from this thread but I don't know how to make it start on it's own when I connect the SSD to the desktop.

    https://superuser.com/questions/22766/how-can-i-automatically-copy-files-to-a-usb-drive-when-i-connect-it-to-my-comput

    these are the "scripts" I use:

    the .bat file:

    @echo off
    cls
    echo waiting
    goto check

    Change the STUFF TO COPY location to the folder that you want
    everything inside to be send to the usb's, and change the 3 instances of
    G: to whatever drive letter that the USB uses.
    Good Luck!

    :start
    set choice=
    robocopy "W:\BACKUP\VOJTA-NOTEBOOK" "D:\BACKUP\VOJTA-NOTEBOOK" /E /XA:SH /R:3 /NP /V
    echo Waiting for removal
    goto wait

    :check
    timeout /t 1 /nobreak >nul
    if exist "W:" (goto start) else goto check

    :wait
    timeout /t 1 /nobreak >nul
    if exist "W:" (goto wait) else (
    echo removed
    echo waiting
    goto check
    )

    the autorun:

    [autorun]
     ;Open=backup_copy_ntb.bat
     ShellExecute=backup_copy_ntb.bat
     UseAutoPlay=1

    Does anyone have any suggestion please?

  11. Thanks for the advice.

    I tried to rule out the motherboard by swapping the GPU to the other slot, DDU'd and clean installed drivers, reset boost profile of the card... and what do I get

    Artifacts and freezes on the d e s k t o p.

    Afraid she's drawing her last breaths. Now here's an expense I really don't need right now.

  12. Hi there,

    my 1080 is being utilized heavily in Folding@Home. However lately my PC has been experiencing freezes that could only be resolved by a hard reset. In event log there's  a bunch of entries with event ID 17 - corrected hardware error.

    How should I proceed to make sure it's the GPU?

  13. I ended up going with a tiered storage space - 450GB SSD Simple Tier, 3700GB Parity 5 columm HDD tier.

    Initially I set up a storage pool in the GUI, then moved over to Powershell to set up the columms, tiers, and the virtual disk. I was reffering to the topics below and some guides on Microsoft website.

    Performance of the previous Parity Space:
