PSA ; please, don't run ANY type of cables on top of a heating element (in this case, an electric baseboard).

I've had techs spend 2 days trying to fix a printer that would randomly stop showing up on the network.

Unfortunately, it was all remote support, and the end user was completely useless (he had a hard time following directions to power cycle the printer).

Today I was dispatched to help him out since it was a VIP user (top management).

Turns out, he has an electric baseboard at the bottom of a window, and that happens to be where his work desk is ... All the cables (Ethernet, HDMI, power brick for his laptop) we're sitting ON TOP of the baseboard. Both Ethernet cables were burnt to a crisp (literally, B U R N T !!!)

So I spent an hour fixing someone else's mistake, under a desk, eating dust and burnt Ethernet cable particles. Made sure all the cables were routed properly and away from the baseboard.

Jesus Christ people ...

    Pretty common with non-techies

    ...truly worthy of his position...

The good new is Ethernet cable (that looks to be riser cable) has a certain fire retardant rating. It will burn but it will not sustain a flame. Plenum cable has a higher rating but it's harder to work with.

Yeah, being non-techie has a higher ratio with top management (at least in my experience) since when they encounter a problem, they have someone else deal with it and they move on with something else more important, while the regular user will have to stick with a tech to make sure his issue is fixed, and will learn in doing so (even if just a little) ... though there are some people that can't be helped and will never learn, but that's another story.
