Taipeek reacted to perplex in Project - Prevent Destruction
Hey Guys,
This isn't a real build log but its similar. The story behind it is, My youngest brother (20 years of age) has disability's, the main one is Autism, in the past 5 years hes began breaking things, so i have to think of ways to stop him breaking it and build it. Things hes done are, broken 7 laptop screens by snapping them, breaking doors off the hinge, broken 3 tv's by snapping the screen or pouring water down the back of them, breaking tv controllers, media players ect
Ive given him one of the old laptops of the screen hes broken, but its to slow and hes broken the keys on the keyboard, they also are covered in chocolate milk and abit sticky... ect. So for his 21st birthday, i thought i would get him more of a computer what will be faster, but ill have to stop him from pouring water over it, and this is what i came up with, ill also post extra picture of what else ive done at the end, hope you enjoy and hope if anyone else has or knows someone like this, maybe this can help them
This is the start, where i just varnished it
The insides
With the Side on
This is where the USB ports are going to go
Should look something like this
The bottom of them
The ON button :P
This is the Dell computer i got for cheap and you can see the wires for my external button and fan
It will go into that corner covering the power points
The computer inside the box after i bolted the box to the side of the table
With the side on ready to get set down
This is what it looks like Inside its box
Finished product
Finished product
Finished product
Installed for his birthday, while he was at school (special place for the day) and its bolted to the wall, so he cant do anything to it
2 weeks later snapped the keyboard so i had to do this, its glued to the wood
Screwed down here
I found out couple of months later that my job wasn't finished with the screen, i put perspex on the top to stop him pouring water down it but i caught him picking the monitor up and putting it on the side to pour water down.. so it had to be fixed and this is what i came up with
This is it, all ready to be installed
This is the back of it, for the cable management :P i put the wood there so he cant push the monitor back
Fully installed, bolted down and the screen cant move
Everything completed!!
So yea hope you liked, here are the extra picture i took of things i made for him
The Tv, stop him touching it with acrylic perspex screen, and water proof with the speakers and its bolted to the wall
His Media player, the last one he kept smacking it on the desk and after about 6 months and 200+ times getting hit on the desk the hard drive finally gave up and died, so i got a new media player and hard drive and put it inside
The controllers, he use to snap them, i didnt use to have the acrylic perspex on the top but he managed to break a controller buy hitting it with his calculator....
This is his computer screen, acrylic perspex screen and over the heat vents at the top so water cant go down, there is a gap on the side so some hot air can excape, you can also see the chocolate milk on the side of the screen where he has tried to pour it in :P
This is again acrylic perspex over the stained glass because it use to push his hand through it and break it...
Well that just about does it, with most of the things ive done
Everything was cut out with a CNC machine my other brother owns and cut out for me
Hope you enjoyed it and hope it helps anyone else who is dealing with these issues :)

Taipeek reacted to Jammin in A Quiet Micro ATX Case From Scratch
Building your own case from scratch is a pretty daunting task the first time around (I'd be a little more confident doing it again now), particularly when you don't have access to a workshop and all the equipment that entails.
So below you'll find pictures of what I went through to build this case. I was set on the Micro ATX form factor as I didn't want it to get too big, though compactness wasn't the ultimate goal. Being as quiet as possible was the priority (while not getting too hot).
The hardware itself isn't as fancy as many of the builds that you'll see in the forum, so there is no water cooling and the specs are pretty modest (still need a better GPU).
The original case build was done in May/June 2011, so I've used this for a couple of years now.
The current specs are:
Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.3GHz
8GB Mushkin Silverline DDR3 1333
ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z
AMD HD 6670 1GB GDDR5 (Accelero S1)
Corsair AX850
Samsung 1TB HDD
E-MU 0404 USB Sound Interface
Thermalright TY-140 Intake (bottom), Exhaust (top) and CPU (Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Rev.C)
This was the original rough design mockup in Sketchup (with a fan controller that was later removed in favour of motherboard fan control):
Below are the stages of building the case (there are more detailed photos, but I'm just picking them out to give a flavour):
And this is what it currently looks like with hardware:

Taipeek reacted to Immort in GTX 770 Comes Close to HD 7970 Ghz Performance
690 kills Titan as well, Titan is an over-hyped over-priced chip, people should stop comparing other cards to it !
Back on topic, I'm actually shocked to see the 7970 establish such a large lead in Skyrim, didn't expect that.

Looks like I'll be getting a 7970 Ghz then, hopefully AMD will respond with a price cut so I can get one for cheap.

Taipeek reacted to Genecidalic in Linus Tech TIps Forums Changed My Life!
Linus mentioned in today's video somthing about the forum changing lives. He was kidding however this forum has literally changed my life. I used to not know what i wanted to do in my life. At first i thought about the military, then being a police officer. Although i thought computers were cool i never actually was interested in them. So then one day i decided i wanted to get into computer gaming. So i looked up some youtube videos on computer peripherals(At the time i didnt know my current computer would barely run games) and discovered linus. After watching his videos and hearing about these forums i joined just for some fun. While i joined only a short time ago ive learned so much and have taken such great interest in computers ive decided this is what i want to do. Ive begun taking computer science classes. A friend of mine is going to loan me some of his old college books about computers, and ive got three computer building jobs for friends this summer. Thinking about all this made me realize how great this forum is. I have a new direction in life and i cant and i cant thank you guys enough for it!

Taipeek got a reaction from Tesseract83233 in Which panel does the LG 27EA53VQ use?
You use HDMI am I right? With DVI you won't have any problems with overscan ;) I used HDMI with AMD card in past and some games like Just Cause 2 cause the overscan to apear even if I have that turned off in catalyst...so if you run in this trouble the DVI will save you a tons of time diagnosing the problem ;)

Taipeek reacted to Whaler_99 in Power consumption
Ya, the newer ones, with the highest efficiency PSU will give you the most bang for your buck. I am running about $100 a month for power... I expect that to go up a wee bit when I add in two more 4P servers, but all my systems use Gold efficiency PSU...

Taipeek reacted to qwerty90 in Power consumption
@Taipeek: Well, CPU isn't power hungry as GPU's, and you can still put out nice PPD (take a look on the spreadsheet topic). I'm folding with a i5 3450 and a 3570k, and the PPD is decent. The AMD GPU will get tanked without core17 wus, and depending on how old are those nVidia cards they could be not supported. If they are supported, just fold and see if the PPD is worth to leave it on.
With CPU only you'll be consuming around 120W per rig (I'm guessing), 150W from the wall at 80% efficiency. Times 5, 750W from the wall every hour. At 0,26 USD for the kW/h, it'll cost you ,195 USD/h. 24/7 it'll be 140 USD in one month.
@Talsyrius: Your rig will draw about 250~300W at full load, depending on GPU overclock. At 80% efficiency your rig will draw 310~375W from the wall.

Taipeek reacted to dgtL in Disable uTorrents Featured bar
Within the last updates uTorrent has added ads....Booooo. So lets get rid of them! xD
They make you think you can just remove from the right click context but its not that easy. But dont fret its still possible AND easy.
Just open Preferences (Ctrl+P) and go Advanced located at the bottom.
On the filters field type "offer"
Find the "offers.sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled" and set to FALSE
And thats it! just restart uTorrent and that ugly little bastard is gone!

AMD should come out with a bad ass name to rival the Titan. Something like MAMMOTH....awe yeah!
I think Nvidia will come up with another brand name like GeFX 180 and start the numbers all over again.
