  1. hm well the xeon e seems to only like have 20 PCIe lanes so further expansion with a sas hba + more nics could cause potentional pcie connectivity bottlenecks thats why the epyc would be a neat future proof cpu (128 pcie lanes). well since the storage is used for data recovery storage the type of files varies from regular images of hdds (vary from 1-20tb of size depending on the customer) up to the extraction of the stored customer data on the harddiscs so this can be anything (photos, videos, office documents you name it..) i could scale the ram down to 64gb but incase i completely fill the system up with the 16 bays i may need to upgrade again and since the pricing of ram is nowadays alot better it would be just a save shot to get directly 128gb and profit of octa channel support + future headroom. build quality wise its of course not compareable but as its a company purchase warranty aspects are with new hardware better compared to a used one, would it be for a homelab i'd surely get a refurbished one. yeah i do plan on perhaps dropping the other server i have in the rack and perhaps move some small vms i got running there over to the storage one (observium, smokeping etc.) i previously looked into a 45drives server but the pricing kinda dragged me away from buying a already pre-built system hence the manual selection of the parts. does someone have experience with the onboard 2x SlimSAS (PCIe 4.0 x8) connectors? since thats what i would use to connect all 16 bays to via a SFF-8654 8i breakout cable to SFF-8087 (which the cases backplane has) PSU wise i did check and the one i listed is compatible, its redundant and 550W seem good to me considering that i'm not putting in any GPUs or so.
  2. cpu wise i figured the same but i cant really find a “newer” lower model, ram wise i’ve read that truenas needs like 8GB + 1GB per raw 1TB hence 128GB. one thing i forgot is that there will be 3 other pcs writing similar files (data recovery related customer data) towards the share just over regular 1GB nic. the reason why i dont want a used server is mainly due to reliability concerns - the storage is storing critical working data and i cannot afford any possible downtimes. i will check again psu compability, thanks
  3. I'm looking for some feedback on a upcoming storage server build which'es purpose will be for using it as a network storage for imaging of harddisc (split up files of each 500MB) and aswell as a FTP server. The OS i'm most likely going with will be truenas and access to the main working pc will be provided through SMB or iSCSI over 10G networking. Chassis: Inter-Tech 3U-3416 CPU: AMD Epyc 7252, 8C/16T, 3.10-3.20GHz MB: Supermicro H12SSL-NT RAM: either 2x Samsung RDIMM 64GB, DDR4-3200, CL22-22-22, reg ECC or 4x Samsung RDIMM 32GB, DDR4-3200, CL22-22-22, reg ECC (unsure yet but i think 4x 32GB would be a better approach regarding octa channel support) Cooler: Supermicro SNK-P0063AP4 PSU: Inter-Tech ASPower 2U 550W and to connect the 16 bays 2x SFF-8654 8i 74pin to Dual SFF-8087 cables Drives i've picked would be for the start 8x Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB, SE, 512e and most likely a RAID-Z1 or RAID-Z2 Would this be a good fit or is it overkill? Network wise since its already only Ubiquiti gear i'd get a Unifi SW Aggregation to connect it all up. Thanks!
  4. haven't tried unhooking the SLI bridge yet cause the two other screens work fine and the BenQ shows display output, just in a not appropriate resolution. i did aswell download the display driver from the benq website and installed it via the device manager, shows the screen without any marks and on the properties it says the device is functioning properly.
  5. since i've reinstalled windows 10 due to a boot loop after the creators update i'm experiencing a few very annoying issues. first is that my third screen (BenQ XL2420T connected via DP) doesnt show anymore the resolution 1920x1080 - neither in the windows display settings nor in the nvidia control panel. i can only select between the following res.: GPUs are 2 980s in SLI (EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0) i'm currently running the driver version 378.49 but i tried aswell the newest one when i installed the system freshly. (did then a uninstall via DDU and reinstalled 378.49 where it showed then the 1920x1080 res. but after a day or two it acted the same way only showing the stated resolutions) i tried aswell using a different DP cable and trying other ports on the gpu but that didnt help either, running HDMI to the monitor shows the 1920x1080 res. without issues and also seems to work fine after several reboots. the other 2 monitors i got connected are ASUS PG278QR which are both running fine on 2560x1440 native and 165Hz (aswell via DP) would be glad if someone knows what the cause might be as before i reinstalled windows it was running flawlessly for months and i'm currently out of ideas.
  6. currently only the pump is connected to the psu with the molex connector since i was still in the part of filling the system while after the 3rd or 4th power on/off the pump started to act like that
  7. no i havent, since the pump does work properly but i dont know whats wrong since i suspect that there is air in the pump and it doesnt get out. sometimes the pump is able to run and also reach the waterflow that it should have but when i turn it off then and on again i just see how it tries to spin through the acrylic 3 times and that over and over till its able to run again after some time.
  8. Hi, i've just installed in a new system the EKWB "EK-KIT X360" and i am experiencing some weird issues that i see that there is a waterflow but the pump housing (silver part below the acryl) is getting very hot, i suspect that there is air in the pump but i already tried everything to move the case around and also the pump, it just doesnt want to go away. When i turn the system off the pump doesnt start up anymore, it trys to start spinning but thats all unless i move the pump around till it finally spins up again. I am using the EK-Ekoolant EVO UV Lime Green coolant just incase. Thanks in advance
  9. will replace it asap with a EVGA Supernova G2 1000W since there is a -50% discount code in the box
  10. Hi, just got my second EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 and i am not quite sure if my current PSU can handle it. Current System: PSU is a OCZ Fatal1ty 750W i saw on some threads that it is possible but i dont really want to maybe damage something by trying it. thanks!
