do not turn on the power without a cpu cooler mate. while there are safeguards that is asking for trouble and could easily result in a burnt cpu. at any pc shop you can probably buy a stock intel cooler for little to nothing. make sure to use cpu paste between cooler and cpu.

Conan1600 reacted to KuJoe in How good are Ryzen CPUs for virtual machines?
I wasn't sure exactly how to benchmark a VM so I just built a Windows 7 VM (Home Premium since it was the only ISO I had available) in VMware Workstation, gave it access to all 8 cores/16 threads and 8GB of RAM instead of the 16GB I have installed, then ran Cinebench R15 to see how it performed compared to the PC to see if there was an issues and how much overhead there was from the virtualization and the score was less than 200 points different than the score I got on the PC itself which is pretty impressive.

I cloned the VM and gave each VM 2 cores and 4GB of RAM and ran Prime95 to max out the CPUs and while they were running in the background I did some normal work for a few minutes on my PC and didn't notice any slowness while doing my normal tasks.

Again, I didn't go too in depth with the testing because I don't know the best approach. If you have specific programs you want me to test or any specific tasks you'd like me to run I'd be happy to test them for you, I could even record the tests if that would help anybody else.

Let me know, I'm open to requests and would love to find a good way to benchmark VM performance since that's the main reason I upgraded to Ryzen 7. I haven't played with VirtualBox much, I only have it installed because I was getting an error with a Linux distro I was playing with and wanted to rule out the issue was with the virtualization so I haven't touched it since but I'm willing to spin up some VMs on that also if you want me to test some specific features or functionality.

you want my opinion so ill give it to you. no, it is not worth it, you will achieve very little extra overclock if any at all with your reduced temps (most likely nothing) and your current temps are not likely to shorten the lifespan of your chip. that said you wouldn't be here if it wasn't gnawing at your soul like a beaver on a stump so take a deep breath, steady your nerves, and play whack a mole with your 300 dollar CPU.

since you already have a very good PC you may want to consider if an upgrade is worth your money. if you are unhappy with the amount of time it takes atm then rendering will be faster on a ryzen but not so much that i would personally bother to switch unless the machine made me money or i just want to cause tech makes me happy. certainly ther are small trade offs with a 7700k to Ryzen system. either of these CPU's should be considered amazing.

Well first off, don't grab a 1700X grab a 1700. The only difference is clockspeed and you can fix that by overclocking even on the stock cooler.

Second off I'm unsure about UE. But compilers are generally very well threaded recently and Ryzen will do amazingly in there.

Also take a look at literally every workstation CPU test conducted by Anandtech. http://www.anandtech.com/show/11170/the-amd-zen-and-ryzen-7-review-a-deep-dive-on-1800x-1700x-and-1700/15

Also Exchange the graphics card for Asus Radeon RX 480 8GB ROG STRIX: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/XygPxr/asus-radeon-rx-480-8gb-rog-strix-video-card-rog-strix-rx480-8g-gaming
Or go for a similar priced 580 that should be announced next week which should be performing a little better while being more power efficient.
With such combo you should end up with a better performing system at the same price as the Ryzen 7 build.
Note also the faster memory (3200) will be making a difference as the CCX that communicates between the cores in the cpu will match the speed of your RAM memory.

Also I would chose the MSI B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 motherboard over the gaming pro though that's an ATX formfactor

Conan1600 reacted to NerdModeEngaged in Ryzen OC Results
I am really happy I made the jump as it allows for much more headroom going forwards with more modern games taking advantage of multi cores, but not only this, the single core performance is also very good, intel needs to make some moves quick as i5s and i7s cannot keep going on being 4 cores while trying to compete with AMD, i said to myself im not going to upgrade my CPU when i got my haswell i5, until i could get a 6 core, this has finally happens as i now believe quad cores are not powerful enough for modern computing, just look at CPU utilisation in games on your cpu, it is really concerning that they have such little headroom moving forwards, however now their is competition in the market again, the stagnation has stopped hopefully meaning we will see innovation from both blue and red teams moving forwards, I do not see myself as part of the Blue, Red, or Green teams, i just want innovation and value for money.

going to throw my 2 cents in. Ryzen 1600 is a 6 core 12 thread cpu that IN GAMING loses 2-7 fps on OVERCLOCKED i5 7600k but does EVERYTHING  a cpu should do better than an i5 7600k. on many games the i5 is pegged at 100% leaving no headroom where a 1600 has plenty to spare for the next 3 years. anyone for any use case is doing their self an injustice by buying a i5 at this point IMHO.
*AM4 platform will be viable and UPGRADABLE with a better CPU for many years. Intel chipset is dead next year
    * Running background processes irw cases and gaming at the same time is a win for Ryzen
    * Ryzen will continue to improve as it is a new platform. Intel will not for the next year and a half
    * losing a few fps is only a thing if you are gaming 1080p with a GPU higher than a 1070 as 1070 and below you will be mostly gpu bound.
    * use cases can easily change but cpu's can not
TLDR currently anything below an i7 on a new build should be a Ryzen chip as it is simply a better CPU all around period and as game architecture is changing 8 threads will increasingly become important which is why many use i7 chips today, so when asked " help me chose between a 4 core 4 thread and a 6 core 12 thread cpu with a trivial loss of fps on some games or none at all if gaming on a 1070 or below or at 60hz monitor, the choice is pretty easy. all i5 chips are dead to me on this architecture.

The only case where this changes is if you are competitive  gaming at 144hz 1080p in which case you MAY want to buy a i7 7700k with a 1080 ti for its better frames. any budget build i5 at this point simply should be Ryzen

Nope, i am not an AMD fanboy. I am simply stating the obvious

    Conan1600 got a reaction from Ryujin2003 in Ryzen 7 1700 not posting
so building a pc can be tough for first timers. what  psu did you use? did you use thermal paste between cpu and cooler? if you didn't it often will not post or shut down as it is protecting itself from overheating. did you remove the clear film from the underside of the cpu cooler? if not same situation. is your psu the right size? are your connections tight? is your MB throwing a beep code (refer to your user manual). it may be time if you can not get it to boot after common testing to RMA as more in depth testing would only lead to frustration, unless you have a local pc shop that will look at your build and determine the specific problem.

    this guy is correct.
although in shear fps the 390 eeks out barely a few over the 970, but you must take into account features as well so if you like amd or nvidia software.
in raw power atm on dx 11 this is dead on
as for the 980 it depends on the price you pay. on evga b stock you will see the 980 go for 350.00 to 375.00...at that price (although it takes a lot of cents) it make a lot of sense to buy it

The 390 is a slightly better 970. The 390x is a little worse than the 980 but not by too much.

Hey there,i recently bought a new rig with i5 6600k, asus z170 pro gaming and gskill ripjaws 4 ddr4 2400mhz.

I have been running my i5 at 4.4 ghz with 1.275v core stable for a month now it passed 8 hours in realbench with max 78c (hyper 212 evo).In gaming i usually get max 45-50c on normal load and 60-65c after heavy gaming for a while. (hot country around 30 degrees room temperature)

I tried 4.6 ghz on 1.325v it booted but failed immediately when i opened the stress test. Since i didnt want to push the vcore too much i settled with 4.4 but now that i see people saying that skylake has much higher voltage than haswell and hitting even 1.4 etc i was thinking to go 1.35-1.375.

Do you think i can make it higher? Would it be safe in terms of thermal and longevity? Id rather have it stay at 4.4 than make it risky. But if i can make it i want to.

     Any help is appreciated thanks.

check all hardware cables and make sure it is seated well. in fact turn off power use one hand to hold metal frame and other to re seat the gpu. uninstall the gpu driver and re install the driver after a re start. download hardware monitor and put the cpu under load and check the temps against stated gpu temp specs. there is a passive cool and a fan model of that card i think. if it is over 90c i would clean it and re seat it again if ypu do all that and nothing fixes it this is what you need to do....
remove your gpu from the PC. dig in your pocket and find a very reflective quarter. the more it shines the better? take that quarter and carefully so that it does not make contact with any of the soldered contacts tape the quarter up to the under side of the card right at the edge of the cooling fins. make sure the tape is very secure. now walk outside. with all the might your arms can muster throw the gpu over the nearest cliff. you will have lost a quarters value
