  1. yep, it sucks big time I just find everything i need manually and pin it to the start for all other searches the WSL bash mlocate with sed finds all other little files much faster
  2. The sotify program on my computer does this by default.
  3. Is the usb port directly attached to the mobo? Maybe that could help I once had an amp (not a dac) that was powered via usb. When the power was supplied by the mobo usb port it sounded terrible, but when powered with a phone charger it sounded perfect, but the amp was too tiny for what I wanted. I got a dac and amp now that each get their power from the wall, and its been great ever since. I could be wrong, but see if you can buy a usb cable that splits power and data, and plug the power side into a decent separate usb power supply separate from he computer.
  4. Not aware of any, but I have accidentally found a few crypto coin mining websites that managed to slam my CPU. I dont think they will give you meaning benchmark data though. It might be easier to just see the about page on the OS which tells you the model of CPU that many others have already bench marked.
  5. I just tried win10 in virtualbox with ddr3, and its way worse. I think Im gonna ditch virtualbox now It was way faster directly on the host.
  6. Although solved. Another option might have been to use GRUB boot loader to replace the windows boot manager. Its not fun to configure and setup though. Why not run XP in a VM and pass things though to it?
  7. This might sound dumb, but most wifi routers / access points have a web interface that would let you block a MAC address (no internet), and should work on your phone. Might be easier? If they can figure out how to spoof their MAC address then kudos to them; they are smart. As for a free simple way to filter internet content; look into changing their DNS servers to point to a filtering DNS server that you can trust.
  8. That sucks.. Im able to get away with it by telling them to use OWA for a while until changes sync. Be sure to let us know if you find an easy fix!
  9. As long as its not joined to their domain and the OS was installed by you; nothing much at all. Other then possibly removing the activation if they used a MAK key, If it was activated with their own local KMS activation server, then it might have be re activated every once in a while on their network. if you run the command below, than it will tell you what licence model was used to activate and the days remaining if KMS was used. A normal key would say "Retail channel" slmgr.vbs /dli
  10. If you dont have money. Than why buy a license at all? You do know that you can install windows 10 without a key and it will work just fine, right?
  11. If mobo (cmos) is bad than time will be off if the computer has been completely off for a while. In the control panel; search for "time" and click change date and time. Then -> internet time. Type in pool.ntp.org and click update now. Should be good after that.
  12. You could install mlocate than run updatedb, than search everywhere for the file.
  13. I think ffmpeg via HLS and than HLS .js would be interesting. I want to try it someday.
  14. Also if you are trying to play sounds from an application via a "microphone", also look at Audio Router... it lets you route a specific application like Chrome or spotify.. into a virtual cable and treat it like a microphone input, so that you dont hear all the other applications making sounds on the stereo mix.
  15. Virtual audio cable is free (for one virtual cable), if you donate $5 you get two more virtual cables. Anyways, sounds like you want Voice Meeter. you can have two mic inputs into one output. Unreleated; check out VST Host; its free any you can use free vsts like gates, reverb, gain, eq, compressor. good stuff
  16. ---removed-- woops, looks like you already said map drives work to it.
  17. From reading the policy; it looks like you can defer the "feature update" (version).. when doing so you specify what it will update to from the drop down.. the drop down says "current branch" or "current branch for business". So I would assume it will update to whatever you have selected. If you have CBB selected than after 365 days it will update to the next CBB, not the very latest version. I think the next CB turns into CBB, and oldest semi annual turns into the CB. So hopefully any weird bugs will be worked out by the other masses of people by then. Feature updates are not the same as security updates... Security updates should be applied immediately, while feature updates are non relevant unless you need something it offers. I personally use 1703 (the current branch) and also have the next feature update deferred because.. who cares... Testing the next branch for work / for fun is a different story.
  18. This is not recommended, bit check to see if they in the driver store. This is where drivers "hide". However; deleting the wrong driver here could cause a big problem so be careful, and take a more logical approach first.
  19. I'm not a programmer (far from it), but working with databases (SQL) and interacting with them with other languages would be nice to know for a lot of jobs. I guess coding for gaming engines is different since the "core of the code" is all in the engine and you are just adding to, and using things relative to it, but engines and things change. So knowing the ins and outs of other languages cant be bad. Most programs are heavily pushing to be web-based these days. So thats not bad to learn stuff like ruby, php, java, .Net (C#) for back end stuff, and javascript, css for front end stuff.
  20. For what you want to do; just go to the control panel and search for "windows to go". (might need pro edition)
  21. It does vary based on cost of living in the area you live. At least in the southern part of the US a computer technician can make 35-45k a year. Maybe slightly less for entry level since there is nothing to draw on from the past. My fist tech job was about 37k, but I also had to do a bit of driving around every once in a while.
  22. Yep, you just need to load the boot wim it generates onto the usb, and make sure the service account it uses for the setup in windows can access the deployment share on the MDT server. It may not be worth setting up for a few machines, but if you have many different models with different software and drivers than it is very nice to have.
