Personally I think it´s worth the extra money for the define C over the define S because it´s easier to build in and feels more robust.

I would go with a Fractal design C / Fractal design mini C (depending on mobo size). It´s good quality for the price and very easy to build in.

SO a few questions to narrow your choices down:
    1. Do you want to mount an optical drive
    2. What is the size of your motherboard
    3. Do you want a side panel window?
    3. Do you water cool?
    4. Any specific requirements?

I have built my first PC with my grandpa on the kitchen floor when I was 11  He loves IT and has shared his passion with me. The second PC I built was for my parents that wanted to game again. I sadly bought my prebuild before that as I was too scared to build my own, but I am slowly replacing the components ^.^. I owe my grandfather so much as he made me discover my love for IT

The PSU is very high quality, the case is also good. Its not really my favorite case, I'd prefer a Fractal R5 myself.

I wouldn't worry too much about the efficiency rating in your decision. You'll be consuming around 100w at most 99.99% of the time, which would lead to the following yearly electricity costs (roughly -- substitute .13 for your local electrify cost):
    100w/.90 * .13 * 365 * 24 / 1000 = $127
    100w/.85 * .13 * 365 * 24 / 1000 = $134

There are also molex to sata and sata to sata extensions, so I wouldn't worry too much about the number of connectors either.

also the fan noise won't be much different with either, so again, it's not something I would worry about.

in terms of quality both are pretty similar (and good). So it should come down to how you personally feel about it and which has a better warranty/support in your area.

Skydiver reacted to Oshino Shinobu in Help with RAID
Yes, for the most part. Calling it RAID Z seems silly to me, as it gets people confused. To be clear, it's not exactly RAID 5, as there are a few differences that makes RAID Z a little better. However, the way that they distribute data cross the drives is the same, and the way they work, fundamentally, is the same. It's easier to find information on RAID 5, so that's what I call it. Maybe RAID 5+ would be a better name.

ZFS is a file system. Basically, if you're going to be using FreeNAS and want anything more than just simple file storage, you're going to be using ZFS. It has a focus on protection against data corruption, along with support for high storage capacities and many types of software RAID. If you're going to be using something like Plex (or any other app/plugin), then you're going to need ZFS with FreeNAS, as plugins are not supported on UFS.

RAID 1 would be okay for streaming media on the network. It doesn't have any significant impact on performance, either positive or negative, so it's still going to be as fast as a single drive. How capable it will be depends on how many, and what size data streams you plan on having. As I mentioned before, the networking is most likely going to be the limiting factor. If you have everything wired up to a gigabit network, then the majority of drives are going to be faster than 1000Mbps anyway.

Performance issues can pop up when multiple users are accessing the NAS from different locations, if you're using desktop drives. NAS drives as designed for that kind of workload and cope with it well, but desktop drives can struggle with multiple users at once, as they're fundamentally designed with the expectation of only being used by one user at a time.

As a bit of reference, I can stream three 1080p, high bit-rate, FLAC audio movie files over the Gigabit network from a single drive I have setup in my desktop PC. I can do 4 as well, but time skipping on the videos becomes slow with that many. Saying that, it is a desktop drive, so it may be an issue with the load on it.

EDIT: You can see some of the differences between RAID 5 and RAID Z here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZFS#RAID-Z

Skydiver reacted to dalekphalm in ECC RAM for NAS
I agree. ECC makes sure that the date written in the first place isn't corrupt from a flipped bit while data was still in RAM. It doesn't matter if ZFS scrubs the data if the checksum was calculated using corrupted data to begin with.

While I won't say ECC is mandatory, it is highly recommended if the OP can squeeze it into the budget. Especially if dealing with irreplaceable data, such as family photos, financial documents, receipts, tax returns, etc.

If I ever do a ZFS build. I would personally squeeze in ECC RAM.

Ultimately, it's up to the OP though to decide how important the data is, and rusty precautions are deemed necessary.

There's a web GUI for managing FreeNAS, but if you ever needed to access the machine locally (like accessing the bios), which is sometimes necessary, then you would have to connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse directly to the server (and if you have to do that, then you need to make sure you end up with a board with onboard video (or in your case just have video outputs), which most server boards have although not all).
