LunaP0n3 reacted to AlTech in Reddit pulls a Twitter. Third Party Apps will cost some developers $20 MILLION/yr.
    Summary

Reddit has threatened to enact an end to subreddit blackouts by allowing users to vote out moderators and encouraging users to vote out Moderators that are continuing subreddit blackouts.

Reddit's CEO has refused to backpedal on the controversial changes and insists that most apps won't need to pay Reddit anything for API access.

Reddit's CEO has not stated whether Reddit will go through with the threat or not and what timeframe it would be implemented in if they do go through with it.

    My thoughts
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

You will own nothing and you will be happy.

This is the Reddit that people who still use Reddit, in spite of these changes, deserve.

I almost can't believe Reddit's CEO is actually still going through with his terrible plans and has come up with an even more terrible plan to make the other terrible plans work.

I know Reddit's CEO won't read this but I have a message for him anyways: It's not too late to save Reddit from imploding. Just undo the changes and resign. Reddit can go back to being awesome and losing money. You just need to find a different way of making money that doesn't involve slapping your users or moderators in the face.

USB Hubs only have the bandwidth of the host port for one.
As for running multiple SSDs at once off a hub, I'd recommend a powered USB 3 hub. These have a power brick that allows more high power devices to be on the hub at once.

Even better, if you have a desktop PC with a free PCIE slot, you can get USB 3 Expansion Cards to add extra ports on the back of the system that have up to 7 extra USB 3 ports on them. Just remember to get ones that connect to the power supply with a molex or SATA power connection to avoid running out of power.

Not bad for what I usually get. Tested on a Netgear Nighthawk M1 with 4 bars of signal in a rural location. The local tower hasn't got quad band aggregation yet, so this is pretty much average.

START by backing up any important data to another drive before doing anything else.

The checks mentioned above will go over the whole drive, but that will likely just reveal more failures and exercising the drive that way may reduce the chance of getting the data back afterwards if the state is bad.

You'll want to replace the drive anyway.

And now I want to know what's going on behind the scenes here. How long has this been going on? Is it widespread, or is it one guy on the marketing team that doesn't care about the morality of this? No matter how this goes down, not a good look.

Gonna wait for how this turns out .. Hopefully LTT will make a coverage of this.
I am not gonna try and convince anyone that big companies don´t do shady stuff, cos they definitely do ... but I´d preferably want to know the full story, if it´s just some guy in PR/Marketing or half the company, if it´s first time or a casual thing for them, and so on ...

Either way, this will be interesting.

just buy a big box of 1000 feet, and then crimp the ends your self. Normally get a wall jack, and a patch panel on the other end.

If there is a big range in tempatures, id probably just run the cables to a switch inside, and then have a patch panel they plug into. Then plug those into the switch.

5e will do gig, but if you can get 6 for not much more might as well.

LunaP0n3 reacted to Helly in Help Needed, A disk read error has occurred
It's either a dying boot drive or some critical data got corrupted preventing it from booting. You could try to repair the windows install, or a complete reinstall. If that doesn't complete you definitely got a dying/dead drive.

LunaP0n3 reacted to Mateyyy in What HDD to upgrade to, from a WD Black 4TB for a gaming PC?
A NAS drive still functions the same way, it's just that it's certified to run continuously without any issues.
I'd advise against getting the Red non-Pro in 2-6TB capacities though, as those drives are SMR as opposed to CMR, which is worse.

If I paid for it and the hardware is included, I have every right to do what I want to that hardware. I'm not going to be charged for flipping a switch. I have every right to modify something I own for my own use as long as it does not violate the law.

This will be bypassed, and it absolutely should be. You have just guaranteed that I will hold off on buying an EV as long as I possibly can.

That's crazy. A Seagate from the last decade (or a little more). Logos used to be more visible on OEM products, now they put a letter only somewhere in most cases, on the SN or model number indicating the company initial.

Drives normally have an eeprom chip that includes calibrations etc on the PCB, so swapping the PCB would also require swapping the eeprom.

Windows tends not to play nice booting from a different system that which it was installed, and even if it boots, you might find it will deactivate itself as it will see a completely different system that with which it was activated. Just do a fresh install on the new system, and you'll save a lot of headaches.

That is a battery reset hole. You use that pinhole to perform a battery reset in case your laptop is really badly frozen and you need to reseat the battery, which can't be done on modern laptops with built in batteries. (At least not easily.)
