Yep. The portable ones have smaller and less powerful motors owing to their size and needing to work straight off USB power. An internal drive (or one in an enclosure) would work faster as it has access to more power and 12v instead of the 5v from a USB port. Transfer speeds can be influenced by how clean the disc is, how good the drive is and how good the pressing was for the particular disc. (I use 2 ASUS BW-16D1HT in my setup) I've heard, and experienced the need to clean a 4K disc straight out of the case as there can be residue leftover that can interfere with a transfer. This is a tiny wavelength we're working with here. If you plan on doing a lot of 4K stuff, have plenty of disk space on hand. The files are gigantic.

I have 2 ASUS BW-16D1HTs as they were highly recommended when I was looking into this. Expensive but fast. I did have to flash both to get them to play nice with MakeMKV which was easy enough. One thing I will note is that if you plan on doing lots of 4K BluRays is that you will chew up tons of disk space. (Anywhere from 25GB to nearly 100GB each depending on the title)

USB Hubs only have the bandwidth of the host port for one. As for running multiple SSDs at once off a hub, I'd recommend a powered USB 3 hub. These have a power brick that allows more high power devices to be on the hub at once. Even better, if you have a desktop PC with a free PCIE slot, you can get USB 3 Expansion Cards to add extra ports on the back of the system that have up to 7 extra USB 3 ports on them. It's crazy how it works isn't it? You get a high end drive inside an external USB drive that's a standard SATA drive. Sure, you might lose out on warranties, but how much you can save is crazy.

It's pretty nuts. Whenever I'm able to redo my server I'll be dealing basically exclusively with 12TB EasyStores (and a handful of 8TB drives), and the fact that you can get the 12's on sale for like $180 is absolutely absurd.

This is unlikely to work. My understanding is that the PCB and drive are tied together and you would have to reflash the firmware of the new PCB with the old one or transfer the firmware chip to get the two to play nice. If you tried without doing this the PCB wouldn't know the unique characteristics of the drive and wouldn't be able to find the data.

57 degrees Temp on WD 8TB external USB drive

That's awfully hot for a drive, but to be expected during heavy transfers. Most external drives rely in convection currents through the vents of the enclosure or the metal to radiate heat in aftermarket enclosures. Still, I'm a little concerned with temperatures like that. What is the environment where the drive is running? I would suggest running a small fan across the top of the drive to help move the hot air away from the drive. -

Revisiting some mods I got for UT2004 way back when.
Roadkill Warriors is more or less Mad Max themed. Never finished, and bot support is non existant.
Deathball is soccer for UT2004. (The bots actually chat with typical gamer's chat terms, which I find quite unique)
The more finished of the two.

If you've got HDSentinel Pro, select the drive from the list on the left, click the surface test button, then use the dropdown menu and then select "Disk repair (Read test with sector repair". This will force the drive to reallocate weak areas of the drive to the spare area.
