HKZeroFive got a reaction from Forge in Why do reference cards have blower coolers?
There are quite a few reasons:

    1. It's highly "compatible" with most cases... especially in OEM ones where airflow is minimal and you need to dump out the hot air.
    2. Cost.
    3. It's basically tradition at this point.

Intel might have finally a created a valid reason to buy a 1000+W power supply with the introduction of their flagship X299 processor, the eighteen-core i9-7980XE. It's been no secret that the entire Skylake-X lineup has gained the rather unsavoury reputation of being power-hungry once you start to overclock but this takes the cake.

In LegitReview's test run of the i9-7980XE, they managed to get the chip at 4.9GHz after failing to achieve 5GHz. While the chip demonstrated an extraordinary score in Cinebench R15, it also displayed extraordinary power consumption figures at the same time, hitting an absurd 845W during the run. However, with the Corsair H105, the chip managed to stay at a rather cool 63C during benchmarking. Impressive.

I think I'll give Intel credit where it's due. For a eighteen-core chip, managing to hit 4.9GHz stable is no small feat. The power consumption is obviously a bit excessive but I guess that's the trade off. Keep in mind that this wasn't achieved with LN2 or any of that stuff that hardcore/competitive overclockers use... just a 240mm closed water loop. Thought this was something worth sharing.

He claims that 'Australians do not want super-fast broadband and would not use it “even if we offered it for free”'.

This prick gets paid $3 million a year and says stupid shit like this. As an Australian, I want super fast broadband with no caps. It'd be nice if they offered it for free but we know that will never ever happen.

You want a better unit for that sort of high-end PC. Something like the Corsair RM550x or BitFenix Whisper M would do nicely.

Not going to lie, that PSU is probably Corsair's worst offering (and just a very low tier PSU in general) and I don't feel confident in pairing it with that GTX 970. Even if it is a bug in the BIOS, it may just be a good idea to replace it either way.

The ASUS Prime Z370-P has a poor VRM with only six phases and it's missing quite a few features. The Tomahawk is quite a bit better.

If you're not restricted to those boards, then have a look at ASRock's Extreme4 and Fatal1ty K6 as well.

Why ASUS? Every single motherboard manufacturer has good and bad boards, so you shouldn't restrict yourself to just one brand.

Those boards are fine for a i7-8700K, but you can normally get an ASRock Fatal1ty K6 for less... and that's a better motherboard than the ones you've listed above.

    550W is more than enough.

It's a flawed unit (protection chip leaves something left to be desired and its performance in cross-overload tests is quite bad) but I'd say it's good enough for a GTX 1080Ti.

Yes, you should replace it. Don't get the i5-7500 either. You have Coffee Lake and Ryzen available which effectively makes it a bad purchase.

As long as you're not overloading the power supply, you will be fine. A good unit can run at 100% load, 24/7. Some manufacturers even advertise it... though it's a good idea to have "some" headroom.

There are no "top three brands". Each company has good and bad units.

Destiny 2 is one of those games that thrives on single-threaded performance despite people saying it'll utilise so-and-so amount of threads (and once again proving that utilisation of more threads doesn't mean more performance).

It's one game. You can't make a blanket statement and say "oh, since Ryzen doesn't perform well in this game with my GTX 1070, does this mean that Ryzen can't handle Pascal in general?!". The answer is no. In many other games, R5 1600 can handle a GTX 1070 fine.

Besides, it's been well-documented that for 1080p 144Hz gaming, Intel's processors are usually a better choice. At 1080p, you're eventually going to hit a CPU bottleneck if the GPU is powerful enough.
