comicsansms got a reaction from Juular in New EVGA G6 series
I mean, didn't they release the 2 different BQ series, a B3, a BT and a BV around the same time a few years ago?

They do it because they know retailers will stock their shit, and each skew is given equal precedence on an online stores. Basically, it means when a consumer picks a random PSU (because consumers don't know PSUs), they have a much higher probability of it being an EVGA supply.

It might also be because of supply issues. So that also solves that problem.

They know exactly what they are doing. They know also know people will likely buy from an established brand over a not establish brand, so retails will pick their new skews over smaller brands skews.

comicsansms got a reaction from Arno_Sweeck in Is there a good way to place the ssd from a macbook air 2013 13" in my windows tower pc?
Ebay has plenty of options. I just looked up "Macbook Air 2013 SSD Adaptor"
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313510121130

Also, check that it is a Mid 2013 Macbook Air. A Mid 2012  will need a different adaptor (As it is SATA based, whereas 2013 moved to PCIe SSDs)

comicsansms reacted to Spotty in Can't find a FSP 300-10TAA Psu replacement for Acer TC-895-ua1?
ATX12VO uses a 10pin connector. That uses an 8 pin connector.
Page 30 onwards specifies the required 10 pin connector used in ATX12VO standard. https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/guides/single-rail-power-supply-platform-atx12vo-design-guide.pdf

That person on Acer forums doesn't know what they're talking about. Someone corrects them on the 2nd page of that thread and they argue that "the 10pin connector is only for modular PSUs and the extra 2 pins are for higher end systems" (paraphrasing). I also found another post from the same person where they're claiming that another Acer board with a 6 pin motherboard connector is also ATX12VO standard. 🤦‍♂️ That's not how standards work. Just because a power supply only outputs 12V does not mean it's ATX12VO standard. Acer, HP, etc have all been using their own proprietary 12V only PSUs for years. It'll just be whatever proprietary junk Acer had lying around.

Could you jam a 10pin ATX12VO standard power cable in it and it'll work? Maybe, depending on how Acer did the pinout. The PS-ON, PWR-OK, +12V, +12VSB, and ground pins would need to be in the same spots. The 2 pins on the end of the 10pin connector is one of the three +12V pins and an empty pin, so it's possible you could jam a 10 pin connector in to an 8 pin connector sacrificing one of the three +12V wires providing the rest of the pins are in the correct spots. I have no idea what pinout that Acer board is using.

It's not ATX12VO standard if it's using non-standard connectors. The whole point of ATX12VO was to standardise it and get rid of all the mismatched garbage different OEMs were using.

-5V hasn't been in the ATX standard for 15 years or so.

-12V is not used much anymore but is still in the ATX standard. You more than likely don't need it.

It is a build with a 980ti, and a 660W PSU of decent quality. That is more than enough power. (It doesn't rule out the PSU maybe defective, but I wouldn't default to that).

    OP:
When did you build this PC?
    Are you overclocking anything?
How long did you  run memtest for?

comicsansms got a reaction from HanZie82 in USB 3 to HDMI
USB Display adaptors a software accelerated, which means your CPU is running code to run display stuff on them (So you will be using RAM and CPU to do that)

They can be unresponsive and laggy (depending on what you are displaying on them). But really, they are good options if a GPU upgrade is not an option.

Your CPU iGPU can likely support 2 monitors (and maybe 3 if 1 is DisplayPort running DisplayPort Natively or with an Active adaptor). If you have free display outputs that aren't HDMI, I suggest you adapt them to HDMI.

The main downsides with an outdated version of iOS - you cannot buy and install new apps that now don't support iOS.

If you had purchased/downloaded the app before they stopped supporting your iOS version, you can still download it and use it.

I am looking at getting an XR.

Seeing though the iPhone 6s is still supported, the XR will probably get a long supported life as well

Nvidia Quadro FX1500 (released April 2006) still work with Windows 10. So no, a GTX 770 works fine with Windows 10.

No, Lets make a new account. It can be a pain in the arse to disconnect a connected account.

    Open Computer management,

go to users right click and select new user

Then go to groups, click on Administrators, and add the newly created account

Easiest way to create a windows account that is online (while installing windows) is disconnect it from the internet, then it won't ask you.

But you can create an offline account by selecting creating an account for someone else, and you don't know their sign in details.

    Yeah, try and get something like a HD 7950/HD 7970/R9 280/R9 280x.

You can probably get them for around $50 to $70US, and are still pretty decent cards.

GTX 670, GTX 680, GTX 770 and GTX 760 are also decent choices, but I would try and opt for the 4GB models of those cards.

Windows 7 COA keys should still activate windows 10, (or at least windows 7 Pro, I haven't touched home in years).

It might be a good idea to run magic jellybean key finder and also note down the Windows 10 CD Key

    https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

Your old HDD's windows install won't suddenly stop working if you remove it from the system and install it on a new HDD. If you cannot reactivate windows on the new HDD/Install, you can clone the old HDD onto the new HDD using a cloning software like Macrium Reflect.

If your PC came preinstalled with Windows 7 or older, it should have a COA Sticker with the activation key somewhere on the case. If it came preinstalled with 8/8.1 or 10, it will likely have a windows key embedded into the bios.

You can reinstall windows just fine if it has either of those methods. For the former, it will ask for your key, for the latter it will automatically detect the key.

Buy a used business laptop is really the sensible choice for studying. Cheap laptops don’t last. (Even $1100 Ultrabooks)

I got an Elitebook 8470P for year 12 in 2017. That was a beast with a quad core i7.

My drink bottle unfortunately leaked last year and killed it, but heck, it was only $150AU, and I ended up replacing it with an Elitebook 840 G1 (thinner, but slower).

i suggest 14” laptops. I personally believe they are the perfect compromise between portability and usability.

I will be replacing my laptop this year with either an Elitebook 845 G8, Thinkpad T14 AMD (2nd Gen) or a M1 MacBook Air (undecided).

And get a desktop for gaming at home.
