  1. Hello and thanks for your help, So what I need to get setup and going by end of today is a caching server. Now all it needs to do is cache updates, installation files, and downloads. It does not need to cache websites or media files. Why? well because it's intended to be used for a lan party. Where using a lot of powerful computers for gaming I will have probably 40 people or more here on monday. All it needs to do is cache game installations/updates or windows/driver updates. The hardware I am using is 3 intel ssd 480gb, AMD quad core A10 6800k 4.5oc, ram 16gig 2400 oc, onboard GPU i've got 2 gigabit ethernet cards linked to the network one dedicated down and up to the PC. I'm using a stripped down version of windows 10 Pro N. I was wondering if their was an engine that I could simply download and run/setup I really don't have time to make one from scratch. Does anyone know of an engine that can handle these simple tasks? Does pfsense support caching?
  2. Yes I have seen them and yes you can plug them in backwards it's not difficult. Also, how can you be sure it wouldn't damage the motherboard? Are you an engineer or electrical engineer?
  3. Nope that's their legit site they have never changed it... As for which audio driver to install it depends if your front audio connector that your PC case came with uses the AC97 connector or the full HD one. AC97 link http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false Hd link http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
  4. Here is their site you may search for the one you need. Hover mouse over where it says Computer Peripheral ICs for audio drivers. Located left side under downloads.. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
  5. Unless you plugged the fan header on the motherboard backwards thus causing a reverse in the electrical current only then could I see this happen... but even then only the fan would die?
  6. Are they connected to a networking hub? Or a wireless router? If linked to a networking hub does it auto give out IP addresses and host its own DHCP server? if not then you need a crossover cable to connect the PC's together so that they can communicate. Or use a router and plug the networking hub into that with the PCs in the networking hub. It sounds like you don't have a DHCP server running to handle the communication between the computers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable
  7. I recommend using a local account instead of the online windows account. and see if the problem continues.. Set password on desktop to*
  8. Asrock motherboards or at least some have built in de-humidifiers the PC will detect when the case inside is above x amount and reboot into dehumidify mode and will remain like that to not only protect your PC but also attempt to clear out the humidity back to acceptable levels I have 2 and both seem to work great the last 2 years I've had them. Depending on the brand and socket CPU you use you may be able to find a motherboard with this feature built in. This is one of the reasons they added this feature that and for people that live in like alaska etc.. Update: adding filters to both intake and exhaust will help too. Some places sell magnetic filters that just stick onto the case to make it easy to clean/access. Their video is no good but the feature works well.
  9. Unless windows cannot find you an audio driver then yes go and download from bios manufacturer or from realtek. Unless it's a dedicated sound card then use whatever drivers the manufacture recommends..
  10. change dns setting to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 or to your gateway which is usually 192.168.1.1 by default and leave the second dns field blank. if that doesn't work it could be a firewall or networking firewall blocking it.
  11. Wow just now was finally able to reset my password gees... had DNS conflicts with links fixed by chagning my desktop dns to 8.8.8.8 links worked when i did this.

  12. Yes but this is simply a test to get multichanel working because to be frank he said flat out he has not gotten it to work at all... SO I recommend doing it and see if multichannel even works at all, I mean at this point you have nothing to lose... Think of it as a diagnostic test to make sure it's not an OS issue or network issue. Now that I think about it wasn't your ethernert cables custom made? http://www.incentre.net/tech-support/other-support/ethernet-cable-color-coding-diagram/ Depending on what type you used either A or B, check all ends to make sure the color code is in the correct order and that no RJ-45 connector pin out was wired incorrectly.. (This is quite a common problem..)(Also check to make sure the connector wasn't put on backwards)
  13. Take a look at this SMB Multichannel Windows Server 2012 and SMB 3.0 http://blogs.technet.com/b/josebda/archive/2012/05/13/the-basics-of-smb-multichannel-a-feature-of-windows-server-2012-and-smb-3-0.aspx Question does: Multichannel actually still works with NIC Teaming enabled..? OR It is the SMB-Direct which uses RDMA that breaks if you turn on NIC teaming..? That is funny, because when I enable teaming with my Intel Gigabit CT adapters, SMB multichannel stops working with that team. I supposed you could create two separate teams and then the teams would work together through SMB Multichannel, but other than that, it appears to break it. If this is your issue then you need to find or re-download a copy of windows (make sure windows isn't corrupted) And re-install everything..
  14. Mark, was this link the solution to your problem? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/configuring-multiple-network-gateways#1TC=windows-7 Did it help at all?
  15. ASUSWRT-MERLIN A CUSTOM FIRMWARE FOR ASUS ROUTERSLink to official website: http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/ About Spoiler Asuswrt is the name of the firmware developed by Asus for use in all their recent routers. It was originally based on Tomato, and got extensively modified by Asus over the years as they added their own features to it. Asuswrt-Merlin is an alternative, custom version of that firmware. Developped by Eric Sauvageau, its primary goals are to enhance upon the existing firmware without bringing any radical changes, and to fix some of the known issues and limitations, while maintaining the same level of performance as the original firmware. This means Asuswrt-Merlin retains full support for NAT acceleration (sometimes referred to as "hardware acceleration"), enhanced NTFS performance (through the proprietary drivers used by Asus from either Paragon or Tuxera), and the Asus exclusive features such as AiCloud or the TrendMicro-powered AiProtection. New feature addition is very low on the list of priorities in this project. Asuswrt-merlin officially supports the following router models: RT-N66U RT-AC66U RT-AC56U RT-AC68U RT-AC68P (same firmware as RT-AC68U) RT-AC87 RT-AC3200 (Note: the U, R and W variants are all supported, as they are the exact same hardware and firmware, only different marketing SKUs or different case color) The following models are no longer officially supported: RT-N16 DD-WRT A CUSTOM FIRMWARE FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF ROUTERS. Link to official site: https://www.dd-wrt.com/site/ About DD-WRT is a Linux based alternative OpenSource firmware suitable for a great variety of WLAN routers and embedded systems. The main emphasis lies on providing the easiest possible handling while at the same time supporting a great number of functionalities within the framework of the respective hardware platform used. These are the only two firmwares that I will particularly talk about.. (unless asked) Now I know that a lot of the asus routers have wireless connection issues particularly the N and AC bands. Even port forwarding has issues on asus routers and many more things.. Another thing to note is that the more features/load you use/put on the router the more heat it out puts which may result in over-heating issues. So you may have to add a fan on it. (Example: 30sec video Fan + speed control (NOT MY VIDEO I DO NOT OWN ANY RITES ETC..) ) Now the ASUSWRT-MERLIN firmware fixes all asus problems with the supported models. And if you do run into an issue you can pretty much always fix it using the advanced features it adds to the firmware.. The DD-WRT Firmware adds a great amount of features to most of the asus routers however it still results in having the same issues as the stock firmware in some cases.. And can be a pain to work around your particular issue. Please post any issues with your router below and I will do all I can to help you sort it out. I SPECIALIZE IN NET-GEAR, ASUS, LINKSYS routers. I plan on adding some how to tutorials on installing/reverting back to stock firmware. How ever it is 4th of july today so...this is on hold until next week. Will add how to tutorial sometime next week! Stay tuned for more to come! B)
  16. http://dottech.org/26628/how-to-force-windows-to-use-100-of-your-network-bandwidth-how-to-guide/ If windows isn't using the full bandwidth then you can use the guide above to force it too. Update: the below is a link to Microsofts site telling you how to utilize multiple network cards in windows. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/configuring-multiple-network-gateways#1TC=windows-7 I'd try the bottom link first and see if it helps if not it could be a variety of issues such as how your network is configured to if the server is functioning properly. Or maybe windows 8.1 has a bug in the OS that is causing your issue. Either way it will involve extensive testing.. Update: 3? The below is also another thing I would try.. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-simple-steps-diagnose-network-problem/
  17. Hello, I remember when I was helping my father implement something similar in a school awhile back hope this helps.. We did ultimately manage to work around this and have been extremely happy with storage spaces and SMB3 since then. Problem, The summary for us was as follows: Extremely poor sequential write performance with standard drives. Even with 8x SAS 7.2k in mirror it strugles. Old sata ssd's that simply were not up to scratch. small amounts of ssd's causing a low column count for the matching slow hd teir. In future I will be more wary of this, especially when specing for general purpose file storage (for vm storage this is fine) the new 10GB Nics we used had an issue with certain offload features. After extensive testing we found the correct combination of tcp/udp offload settings For us VMQ was not an issue as this was traffic between hyper-v hosts and the SOFS. Not vm traffic. Hope this helps Solution, We designed and implemented the following: Hardware: 2x sofs nodes with 1x 4port 10gig Chelsio RDMA adapters each (2 for smb3.0 and 1 for cluster coms) 1x jbod with 4x 400gb enterprise ssd's and 8x 4tb enterprise 7.2k sas drives Storage Spaces: 1x tiered space with 2 columns - 1.5tb of mirrored ssd space and 1.5tb of mirrored hd space This has insane IOPS and is great for VM's but is poor on sequential throughput when not using SSD tier (50MB/s or worse) We currently run over 30 vm's on this single virtual drive over SMB 1x non-teired space with 4 columns using just the 7.2 drives - this gives us approx 10TB of bulk storage for large vhdx's such as file servers and other large applications (WSUS etc...) we get 100MB/s of throughput on this due to the extra column counts. Note this space has a 10gb write back cache on the ssd's to absorb small peaks in writes This solution has allowed us to support a school of 1200 pupils and 150 staff with no problems and great performance. We have capacity to double all the drives and double capacity and performance. My tips if i was starting again: Use faster spinning disks (10k/15k) the performance difference is large Add more SSD's so we can have 4 columns accross the board (8x 200gb instead of 4x 400gb) this would allow us to keep with our original plan of having a single tiered space for all vhdx's Pester MS to allow us to tier a storage space with different columns per tiere (2 for ssd and 4-8 for hd for example) Hope this helps/makes sense!
  18. FunkyFeatures Alright well according to a creditable site: Begining http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/memory-bandwidth-latency-gaming,3409.html last page: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/memory-bandwidth-latency-gaming,3409-10.html Their tests show that Bandwidth and latency matter sometimes. Bottom line: Buy the fastest memory you can afford, AT LEAST DDR3-1866, unless you're certain that the slower memory you're buying can be overclocked.. <(this is a quote from the article..) However I wish they would have done some tests below 1600..
  19. kraM1t Okay listen, at least look at my thread here and look at the results: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/391603-amd-apu-overclocking-guide-tipstricksdosdontsetc/ Hopefully this will shut you up. And prove to you that you are clearly mistaken, finding a balance that fits your hardware is important, just like when balancing a CPU and GPU, ram matters too. (NOTE: I update that thread daily as I still have more tests to run..) (NOTE skip to UPDATE 2 that's whats relevant to you.)
  20. I'm not actually investing anything I have everything but 2 of the components which only will cost about 40$... I could change this build to this hardware http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883109011(already have this PC laying around doing nothing)
  21. This project will be put off to the side until my APU overclocking guide is completed. <_< So I plan on using this PC as a home networked device of some kind? (have not decided yet and will explain why at later date..) As you can probably see in the photo's I am using some pretty old hardware why? Well I plan on bringing it up to date with the latest stuff like SATA ports, etc (Plan on adding SSD'd to this and ya I know I will be limited to about 1.5gig to 2g speed wise from my calculations) I am going to modding this to be water cooled and see how far I can overclock it. Hardware Specs: Motherboard: ASUS P4S533-X Socket 478 CPU: I've got a few Pentium 4's and a celeron. GPU: geforce fx 5500 (NOTE: All but 1 of the capacitors blew so I soldered some replacement ones on with higher heat temps lol. New ones 16v 105C-(1500uf) original 16v 1000uf.) RAM: 2x1gig sticks kingston WIFI CARD: Linksys wireliss-N PCI Adapter Phone modem card: Might use as fax machiene or something else.. PCI expansion card thing? MS-6958 Ver:2 (yes will use will explain later) Monoprice 4 Port SATA Serial ATA PCI RAID Controller Card - Silicon (Link to buy is here https://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=2667&catargetid=320013720000066114&cadevice=c&kpid=102667&gclid=CjwKEAjwh6SsBRCYrKHF7J3NjicSJACUxAh7MwuNwc-BYpbp_Ma3qUw8B2dupElhpKFO2zlW7uvEqhoCtA7w_wcB) PCI 32bit TO PCI-e Express 16X 8x 4x 1x adapter card ( I plan on throwing in a GTX 750ti just to see..) http://www.aliexpress.com/item/PCI-32bit-TO-PCI-e-Express-16X-8x-4x-1x-adapter-card/292141759.html Summery: So it will be water cooled, it will be overclocked, it will have sata-1 support, it will have SSD's, it will have a GTX 750ti or smaller GPU depends.., it will be insane and will be running windows 7.
  22. Here is some windows 8 info about your issue https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/jj676805(v=vs.85).aspx I guess in windows 8 they made a good amount of changes scroll down and read the section about TDR process description The problem you are having is an OS issue. I don't think it's a hardware issue..
  23. http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/default.aspx?catid=442&parentcatid=443 You could use acrylic sheets. Or Plexiglass Acrylic sheets. http://www.eplastics.com/plexiglass_acrylic_sheet Again I don't know the temp rating for them but I know the glass one would probably work best.
  24. I'd use mineral oil so that if it does leak it wont kill anything just be messy.. If you do use water slather the crape out of your motherboard and PSU with vassalinee to hopefully prevent damage encase you use water and it leaks.. This is what people do when using liquid nitrogen as coolant.. To prevent condensation from destroying their motherboards etc..
  25. Was your problem resolved? If so please select best answer or post how you fixed it encase someone else comes along and has the same issue.
