Your warranty is void just for asking! They know where you sleep and what forums you frequent. They now have all the proof they need to deny every RMA you ever submit for the rest of your life!

They have no way of knowing and basically you have to go out of your way to say you overclocked it and with a stupid amount of voltage at the same time. Really the only way they'll know for sure is if you dump like 1.7v into the CPU and disable all current protections and whatnot to stop it from shutting down.

There isn't anything you could do with the CPU in BIOS or software that could be used against your warranty claim unless you volunteer that information to AMD.

And is that AutoOC you mention in BIOS?  If it's what I think it is then it isn't utilizing PBO.  It will see what static all core overclock the CPU can achieve.  And it won't do the best job of it either.

Well it's good news that it's in the pipeline already  And that should be when I start seriously considering my TR3 build

    Yeah I don't get that! I would absolutely buy a MASSIVE triple 140 NH-D15 TR4 version!!

Ah I didn't realise sorry! I will get that then if it is TR4 specific I cannot wait to make this upgrade from my current PC!

I have a 2950x@PBO at 4.3-4.4GHz max boost in some cores with a Noctua NH-U14S  TR4 SP3 and it cools fine at max 68ºC (PBO limited), but when OCed mannualy @all cores to 4.2GHz temps go to hell itself, above 80ºC...
You have some options for the 3970X:

    1) Use PBO and be happy with the Noctua
    2) Best AIO (full coverage) go to Enermax Liqtech II 360mm Rad, but it doesn't appears to be a long lasting AIO, since there are a lot of complaints for the first rev.
    3) For manual OC go custom WC and yet I think it will be a little hot (85ºC in some reviews like in derbauer test bench).

I wont run Furmark or any of its derivatives like MSI Kombustor since they don't reflect situation in gaming loads. Artifact scanner... not as good as my eyes. Flickers and odd colours stand out on their own, no need for some dumb software for that

just uninstall GPU tweak, it's more often than not broken. Afterburner is much more reliable, and yes brand of software doesn't stop them from working.

Might want to do something with the VRM temperatures tho, dust clog or lacking VRM heatsink?

where could you see VRM temperatures?

as for overclocking Maxwell, 1.5GHz core is the line between "bad" and "ok". Going past 1.55GHz is considered exceptional.

Corsair RM 650 has 4 connectors on it, in which you can insert either EPS or PCI-e cables.
The reviews say that this model has 2 EPS cables, each with one 8 pin EPS connector at the end.
If you have only one cable, you can buy an extra one from websites like cablemod

You can't use a 6pin or 8pin pci-e cable to power the processor, the order of the wires is different.

The 2990WX can consume up to a bit below 250 watts depending on workload (how many threads are working).
While a single 8 pin EPS connector is good for up to around 330-430w, let's just say 380w as a safe value - connectors are rated for 9A of current, but due to how close they are together, EPS recommends not going over 7A, so you have 4 pairs of wires x 7A x 12v = 330w minimum) - it's a good idea to add the 2nd power cable because it will result in less losses through the wires, and the connectors and wires will heat less.

if you have a single 8 pin EPS, unless you do some hefty overclocking, then you should be more than fine with a single connector. a second EPS connector is far from required. in fact its mostly a useless connector, especially on consumer boards.

watch out for PSU compatibility. not all PSUs use the same end at the output.

and unless you are overclocking hard, its likely you can just run a single 8 pin. you wont exceed 384w, and its likely the board and PSU use the higher spec gauge aswell.

the issue is that the 3950x AM4 CPU is likely to be almost as fast as the 2990wx.

24 core Zen 2 should theoretically, judging by Epyc 7002 pricing start at 1200-1400$. that would be a much better option.

just doublecheck that the name on the cable agrees aswell. they originally use slightly different gauge wires. the 6+2 pin PCIe topping out at 180w i believe it is. and the 4+4 pin EPS tops out at 384 watts. (minimum spec)

Why upgrade to the rendering only CPU that is the 2990wx with threadripper 3 right around the corner? Aswell as 16 core ryzen?

Seems like a waste to me, regardless of your usecase.

@OP Over on the Level1Tech forums Wendell made a guide: VFIO in 2019 – Pop!_OS How-To (General Guide though) [DRAFT]

I was able to replicate his guide on Ubuntu and should be possible on most other Debian distros though some steps may vary in that case. The guide isn't complete yet so you'll have to fill in some blanks yourself or read though the comments. Working with some others we found some answers to some issues.

Looking Glass hasn't been added yet but it's on my list when I make my own installment of the guide for Ubuntu.
