I'm gonna be buying a monitor in the next two months, what I want is an IPS/VA panel with 144Hz refresh rate and either G-Sync or FreeSync. 2560x1440 resolution & preferably 27" screen size.

As for the card to be paired with it, should I go for a high-end Vega 64 (monstrous Sapphire Nitro+) which is cheap here and buy a cheaper, FreeSync monitor, or should I go for the RTX 2070 (or used GTX 1080Ti if I spend more money) and spend even more for a G-Sync one?

Depends on your budget. I'd go for Vega 64 and FreeSync if you can't afford a 1080Ti and G-Sync.

On a completely unrelated note, I wish 1440p 144Hz IPS monitors weren't so expensive. :(

Why not just keep the 1080 though?

1080ti and Gsync is nirvana for 1440p 27'' i love my setup.

EDIT: and i agree with PCGuy an overclocked GTX 1080 will do well on a Gsync high refresh monitor.

the AOC AG271QG is often priced well and looks really nice IMHO

If I went the more expensive, G-Sync route, I'd upgrade the GPU - the Phanteks P400 isn't a great case for two rads so I wanted to go back to an air-cooled card...

A high-end Vega 64 (brand-new) costs as much as my used 1080, and it's the monstrous Nitro+ model, however the performance would probably be a little lower than what I currently have, the monitor on the other hand is quite a bit cheaper on the FreeSync side...

@i_build_nanosuits As someone who has the exact setup I'm considering, would you say a 1080Ti + G-Sync monitor is worth 400USD price increase over Vega 64 + FreeSync monitor combo? I've never used a variable refresh rate monitor myself so I don't know for sure :P If I chose an RTX 2070 it'd be around 320USD.

My only concern with Vega is the power consumption, that means no sensible overclocking besides HBM2 OC. I'd probably undervolt too.

And I'm also thinking - what will AMD bring out in the future in terms of GPUs, to make "buying into the ecosystem" a reasonable choice...

As for the monitor you linked, yeah - this would be the one I'd most likely get for an Nvidia GPU. What pains me a bit that it's twice as expensive as a similarly specced FreeSync monitor here :/ almost 400USD difference.

VEGA 64 will perform worse than overclocked GTX 1080 in most games while running hotter than a 980ti...so no i don't think a downgrade in GPU and investment in Freesync monitor is worth it...keep your 1080 and get a nice IPS GSync monitor 1440p

This is a good point, I hadn't fully considered the heat from Vega.
