How is the performance that terrible if the GPU has dedicated hardware to run these features and they don't actually change the visuals that much? BF games were usually fairly well optimized.

Real raytracing is hard, and the part of the card that is dedicated to it is smaller than the rest. To get better raytracing performance they probably would have had to compromise on everything else and nobody would have bought it.

The performance on non-rtx cards (if the game will even run on those with rt enabled) is most likely much, much worse.

@Sauron why did they release it then, if to get acceptable performance they would have to compromise elsewhere?

i mean let's be realistic, someone who has the money to buy a 2080Ti + the rest of the system around it probably expects 60+ fps...

Did they rush to release it?

@firelighter487 first of all because they can - they aren't under any pressure from their competitor in the high end. Secondly, with this release they got the technology out there for developers to play with. That way, when the technology is finally ready for mainstream use, there will be a decent amount of games actually using it. Meanwhile, they still need to sell these, so they decided to invest in the "normal" shader cores for this release.

I wouldn't buy one, but I understand the thought process.

@Sauron it's still crap move to release these to the type of customer who has money for such a gpu and then not give them at least 60fps...

Promising higher performance with new products is so mainstream

@firelighter487 In my opinion, it's an even bigger crap move to focus basically all marketing of these cards around RTX features and after so much time of no games using them, the games that do completely tank in terms of performance.

Direct Ray Tracing main advantage is for game developpers, it cut down the work they have to do to make games look believeable by 95%...the goal of this is to have better looking games with much less effort...and it's a long term goal...it will not happen overnight, and this is a 1st generation product, and as we all know, first gen tech is never ''amazing'' it gets the job done but is lackluster.

Have you seen the game running in ray tracing mode? it doesnt even look any better than normal mode...and this is because EA spent the time and man hours to make the rasterized version of the game look amazing...but in 10 years from now, when all cards do direct ray tracing without effort, by then all games will use this and no more will game developper will have to worry about creating those believeable shadows and reflections no more...

Also, the game is stupidly well optimized, it's even better than BF1 in that regard...but ray tracing is stupidly demanding, and those 1st gen cards aren't really cutting it for most people unless you're happy with 60FPS 1080p with a 1200$ graphics card...which simply isn't the case for most people...and it's understandable...i can't wait to play the game on my 1080ti at 1440p ultra though...much more wow factor for the money ?

@i_build_nanosuits I wholeheartedly agree, I have to buy the game myself as well, as the performance of the normal version seems great according to the benchmarks! Coming back to RTX cards, well... I honestly don't see a point of buying them when you can still grab a 1000-series GPU because of ridiculous pricing and lackluster performance.

The only feature I'm waiting to show its true potential is DLSS, it might be the next FXAA with better quality IMO ;)

  10. i_build_nanosuits

    i_build_nanosuits

yeah but from what i have seen and heard DLSS doesn't look too good when compared to true resolution/AA when in motion in games...i'm not sure about this either.

RTX cards are selling to people who have the money and don't really care and want the best of the best...people like us who knows better don't buy into a 1000$+ card for an extra 30% FPS in rasterized games...and people who bought into it for ray tracing are in for a disapointment because they don't realize how demanding it is.

Do you realize that nvidia tricked their way into using the virtual AI to ''guess'' what would 85% of those required rays would ''be''...nvidia use the tensor cores to cleverly guess what the final image should look like from a grainy low rays image...so this in a way is not even ''full real time ray tracing'' yet...it's a bit like DLSS, and this is the part that AMD or any other gpu manufacturer will have a hard time developing tech to support this...they need to have the advanced AI and neuro net that nvidia spent years and probably billions in development for...so it's very unlikely that we'll see any other GPU capable of rendering games with ray tracing from anybody else anytime soon.

To be fair, BFV is a wee bit rushed, so optimization will probably improve over time.

  12. i_build_nanosuits

    i_build_nanosuits

@PCGuy_5960BF5 is not rushed at all in fact they extended the release date by almost 2 months just to optimize it and make it amazing...and it' is indeed amazing the level of detail is phenomenal and still a GTX 1060 6GB can handle it at Ultra settings 1440p 60FPS...the game is VERY well optimized...it's just that ray tracing is stupidly demanding, that's all.

I never said that it wasn't amazing, but it's definitely rushed a little bit.

Not hating on the game btw, I have already preordered the deluxe edition. :P

    Spoiler

And they extended the release by 1 month iirc.
