So the time has come. I finally started getting annoyed by the biggest bottleneck in my system at the moment - my monitor.

I've been using a high-end, but ancient Samsung T240HD display (1920x1200, 16:10, TN) since 2008, it's been great as 1200p is a higher resolution than 1080p but the time for an upgrade has come... Gonna start gathering money - estimated time of purchase is in around 2 months from now.

Now I'm wondering, I've got a few options... Since I'm not a hardcore FPS gamer, I've got no need for 144Hz so I prefer to buy a monitor with a better panel and colour reproduction as well as a higher resolution. I want FreeSync though, my OC'd R9 Fury will handle 1440p easily so that's what I'd like.

Options (all 27" with FreeSync):

367$ - iiyama G-Master GB2783QSU Silver Crow - 1440p, TN, 75Hz, 1ms

349$ - iiyama ProLite X2788QS-B1, 1440p, IPS, 75Hz, 5ms

499$ - AOC Agon AG271QX, 1440p, TN, 144Hz, 1ms

I'm wondering now, whether I should just get the cheapest IPS 5ms panel since I'm not playing games such as CS:GO, should I get the cheaper TN one and choose 1ms reaction time or should I spend more and get the AOC one that's 144Hz? It's not IPS though...

There's also an Ultrawide LG 29UM68-P which is a 21:9 IPS FreeSync panel that's 29" 60Hz and it's the cheapest of them all (322$) but I'm not entirely sold on the Ultrawide aspect ratio for gaming and everyday's usage.

My GPU isn't an issue, an R9 Fury is a very capable 1440p card and I won't even be sacrificing much of visual eye-candy because I know how to tweak game settings properly...

Any thoughts anyone? Your input would be greatly appreciated ^_^

Look out with TN Iiyama monitors, they have cheap panels that often have dead pixels. Their IPS panels are made by Samsung and are higher quality.

If I wasn't into competitive games I would go 21:9

349$ - iiyama ProLite X2788QS-B1, 1440p, IPS, 75Hz, 5ms would get my vote personally...21:9 if you like the feeling that your monitor has been chopped in half...i don't...75hz is nice, it can porbably support a custom resolution (overclock) to 85 or 90hz...at this point it should be stupid smooth...dunno what is the freesync window on that and how it would react to a custom resolution like that...but it's worth a shot...IMHO 2560x1440 IPS is the way to go...27'' is the perfect size...it's gorgeous and games really pop and come to life on them...good colors, good aspect ratio...good price as well...defenetly my pick amongst those.

@Minibois Thanks for the info! I've heard good opinions about this company in general and they're cheaper than any competitors here in Poland - that's why I'm considering their monitors at all :P

@ivan134 Well, have you used one yourself? I mean, 21:9 monitors are great for specific kinds of usage - if you do music or video editing for instance, however gaming isn't as good on it cause not all of the games scale that well... I will get a chance to try one fairly soon so I might change my mind if it impresses me. I've got a 1440p high-end IPS panel in the house with another rig so I could have a direct comparison.

@i_build_nanosuits But do you think that monitor will be good-enough for that buttery-smooth experience in games? Or should I invest in something more expensive? If this AOC one wasn't TN, I would probably jump on it without much thinking...

My GPU should handle 1440p quite well, the Fury is an insane-value 1440p card and I'm willing to drop down a few settings and tinker with the game a bit so I'm still gonna be above 60FPS for sure...

Another question: Do you think I should get FreeSync (never used adaptive refresh rates before) or get a bit better monitor itself without FreeSync for the same price? 499$ is max what I'm willing to pay and there's not many other choices with FreeSync besides those that I listed...

i do think you should get freesync if you plan to stick with AMD GPU's...for sure...100%

i also think you should go 27'' 2560x1440

now, do i think you should save/spend a bit more to get a 144hz monitor with the super wide freesync window? yes i do...it's probably worth to go a bit above budget to get something that will satisfy you 110% instead of 85%...but that might just be me...but that's how i think.

is 75hz smooth? yes i do think it's pretty fast, and it's a noticeable bump from 60hz for sure...but 90hz wouild be sweet spot IMHO...anything above 100hz is not very useful IMHO...but 90 to 100FPS is really really nice...that's where the ''game'' animation turn to ''real life smooth'' animation, and i remember being struck pretty hard the first time i played battlefield 4 at 100FPS...it was just sooo sooo smooth... (it still is, but i got used to it so now it's just ''normal''...now 60hz is kinda slow...)
