Belgarathian reacted to Spindel in Apple Responds to Facebook's Anti-Tracking Criticism
    Summary
On december 16th, in a blog post and a full-page ad published in three major newspapers, Facebook claimed that Apple's tracking change will have a "harmful impact on many small businesses that are struggling to stay afloat."
"We disagree with Apple's approach and solution, yet we have no choice but to show Apple's prompt," said Facebook. "If we don't, they will block Facebook from the App Store, which would only further harm the people and businesses that rely on our services. We cannot take this risk on behalf of the millions of businesses who use our platform to grow."

    My thoughts
I feel that facebook are trying the Spotify/Epic argumentation that what they are doing is to stand up for the "small" businesses. But, just as Spotify/Epic, they don't give a shit about the "small" businesses. If your business model relies on not being transparent I would suggest that you try another model. My guess is FB does not have the balls to withdraw from apples ecosystem anyway.

Really? You prefer being in a situation, in which if you bought a brand new platform consisting of a top-tier Z170 board and the top-tier CPU i7-6700K, you had no upgrade path whatsoever since day one?

I'm not that amazed honestly. When I saw Ryzen 3 3100 could only do ~40 fps walking around the city after the Day 1 patch it became pretty clear this would be a total clusterfuck on the Jaguar cores designed for mobile that are in all versions of PS4 / XBox One. Usually PS4 games will look alright, they'll just play at 1080p30 (or occasionally 900p30) at settings that a decent 4C/8T cpu + GTX 1070 could run 60 fps, so it doesn't surprise me at all seeing this game run 15-20 fps on the consoles when it's 30-40 fps on PC with a 4C/8T chip and a 1070.

No it is not correct, been down this before. You don't have to pick the 5950X to do this. How about pick a laptop/mobile part with the same or even previous generation Zen 2 core. To say Zen 3 requires more power for a single core as does the entire M1 is not at all correct.

So no it is wrong, and no performance and power scaling is not linear and we already know the mobile parts at significantly lower per core power are very very close to the desktop high power parts for performance in both single and multicore performance.

But yes lets just pick the worst case possible to make an incorrect point, happens ALL THE TIME.

    Edit:
And FYI Apple is more than capable of also increasing the the power targets on the Firestorm cores just the same making performance per watt worse. Can we apply just a little bit more critical thinking. I would also not be surprised to see Apple do this on even more performance targeted desktop class devices, there is no reason Apple has to limit themselves to the current single core performance they have right now and they can achieve higher if they want to.

Having to counter this kind of senseless rhetoric is exactly why people think and accuse me of not liking the M1, which is far from the truth. This goes back to my point about not acting like the M1 is the seconding coming of tech Christ. For what ever reason something simply being very good isn't enough for people and have to make wild claims and statements supported by fundamental falsehoods.

Belgarathian reacted to D13H4RD in UPDATE: NVIDIA backtracks - Hardware Unboxed blacklisted from receiving GeForce FE review samples over “focus on rasterization over ray-tracing”
    Summary
NVIDIA: No, you can’t just review our RTX FE cards by focusing on the stuff 95% of gamers care about and treating ray-tracing as a bonus feature!

Steven Walton & Tim Schiesser: Haha, rasterization goes “weeeee!”

Not too long ago, the Hardware Unboxed Twitter posted a tweet revealing that NVIDIA has blacklisted them from receiving review samples of GeForce FE cards apparently over their focus on covering rasterized performance over ray-tracing performance. While this is unlikely to affect overall GeForce coverage (AIBs will provide them with the relevant products and the revenue from both views, sponsorships alongside Patreon should help as well), the move strikes as odd.

    My thoughts
I think NVIDIA PR is just trying to poke a sleeping (but not hibernating) bear in the form of the internet with this one. While the GeForce RTX 30 series cards are indeed exceedingly powerful, RT still remains as a “nice to have” feature due to how games like CP2077 can look stunning with it enabled, at the cost of halving frame-rates, not to mention the number of supported titles is still limited.

I also find it funny that Hardware Unboxed has nothing but praise for the RTX 30-series lineup but NVIDIA PR somehow still finds it salty that RT isn’t covered.....and that is despite other outlets like Gamers Nexus also focusing much more on rasterization rather than ray-tracing.....because very few games make use of it...

I was thinking the same thing.... I'm speculating that for the 16 MBP and iMac they might have an M1X with a 6+6 or 8+8 CPU core configuration, 8-24 GPU cores, and an additional 2 RAM chips. However, that would be a massive monolithic design.

M2 would possibly implement the same features and include more PCIe lanes for additional ports and 10G internet, possibly include 5G.

Sure, my point was that users also had x86-64bit Photoshop at perfectly smooth speed (compare that to the Surface Pro X slow mess) on day1.
Whereas one Canadian youtuber insisted there was no Photoshop, called these Macs “iPads” for that and made an ass of himself.
And he upped the ante in his recent unboxing of the Air M1: “in the end, most people are gonna be fine using these as Chromebooks, most people just use the browser all the time”. That may sound like a positive “it’s gonna be fine” comment but it’s actually belittling and misleading, given the abundance of beautifully crafted and fast desktop apps working at day1, be it x86 apps working at smooth speed or ARM apps already available in the tens.

They’re pretty popular in the creative professional space. They definitely target professionals with them too as they (at the time of 8th gen Intel) had high end 6 core i7s, up to 64GB of RAM, NVMe storage, 10Gbit, eGPU support, etc.

Regardless, the ignorant statement that I was replying to said that nobody needs 10Gbit networking because the world’s internet infrastructure sucks. It was nonsensical and had nothing to do with Mac Minis.
