That's one reason I like my Panasonic DECT home phone system. It connects to both my cell phones with Bluetooth, the handsets just use off-the-shelf NiMh AAAs, and the only way it's connecting to the Internet is via a POTS to SIP gateway.

If it can't connect to Home Assistant and work without an Internet connection, I don't want it.

Yeah, that's not sales. That's customer service following a script with no discretion or desire to escalate the issue.

Belgarathian reacted to LAwLz in Volkswagen refuses to help police find kidnapped 2 year old, citing lapsed Car-Net subscription.
Here is my take on the story.

The sheriff called VW (or rather, a call center that VW hired to handle their calls) and the service representative didn't activate an expired service just because someone called in and claimed to be a sheriff. It's not like there was a long call with evidence provided either. The call was apparently 30 minutes long because the sheriff couldn't find a credit card.

For all we know, the conversation might just have been a couple of minutes.
Not sure about you, but I think it seems pretty safe and sound that representatives doesn't hand out access to the service within minutes just because someone claims to be a sheriff over the phone.
Besides, the car had already been found within those 30 minutes.

Judging by some of the comments I've seen it seems like people think VW refused access because of greed or whatever, even though they knew someone was in danger.
The reality is probably more along the lines of a teenager not blindly trusting someone claiming to be law enforcement within minutes of picking the phone up, and not knowing about the protocol VW claims to have in these situations.

    I think it's a completely understandable situation.

    Belgarathian reacted to saltycaramel in Apple to Allow Outside App Stores in Overhaul Spurred by EU Laws {DMA, DSA}
I hope this will be done in a way that will still protect my mom from “click this, allow that, follow this” scams. Problem is the likes of Tim Sweeney would publicly shame Apple if the language of the warnings is too scary and if there are too many hoops to jump thru.

Belgarathian reacted to Kisai in New EU Law Could Force Apple to Allow Other App Stores, Sideloading, and iMessage Interoperability
Politicians shouldn't create regulations when they don't understand the technology.

Could the EU compel Apple to support RCS in iMessage? Yes. Would it be treated differently from the status quo? yes.

    App stores, or Siri, unlikely.

What really needs to come down the pipe is a regulation compelling "indefinite perpetual license." eg, if I buy X app on Windows, I own it, and Microsoft, Adobe, AutoDesk, can not remove it for any reason, be it canceling the service or uninstalling it. If I decide to switch to an iPhone or iPad, and the same software is available, then I should not be forced to buy it a second or third time. If I buy it once, I am entitled to run it on any device that I own, under the same conditions I originally purchased it (eg, if bought a playstation game 20 years ago, then I'm entitled to any "emulated" version of it on any platform without having to buy it again. If the developer remakes the game, I'm only entitled to the remake if developer doesn't also have the emulated/native version of the original.)

To take an example SEGA has released versions of Sonic 1/2/3 for multiple platforms. If I own the original Cart, then I should be entitled to the same game inside "Sega Genesis Classics" , but also the same game inside "Sonic Origins" because the game is identical. You could make the argument that "Sonic Origins" is a different game, but it isn't.

On the flip side of that Final Fantasy VII "Remake" is a different game. If I own the PS1 or original 199x PC version, then I should be entitled to any of the "fixed" versions released of FF7 for the PC other than "Remake"

If I own MS Office 2016, or Adobe CS6 then I should be entitled to that version, forever. If I "upgrade" to a cloud version, then that perpetual license should be brought forward even to Creative Cloud 2022, because those products have fundamentally not changed. Any new software added to Cloud since purchasing CS6. No.

If I switch between Mac and PC, I should still have that license. If I switch to an iPad, I still have that license.

But under the way things work right now, if I buy a game on iOS, and were to later switch to Android. That entire investment in the Apple ecosystem of discarded. If I buy a game on Steam, I don't automatically get it on iOS, PS5 and Nintendo Switch. That's a problem, and an obstacle to changing platform, or even using multiple platforms.

Belgarathian reacted to Oshino Shinobu in Toyota to start chargings its car owners a subscription fee for remote vehicle start
Charging monthly premiums for features that literally cost nothing for the manufacturer to keep active is ridiculous. Not sure how Toyota's remote start works, but if remote start required the FOB or smartphone to send a request to a Toyota hosted server, which then relays to the car to start it, then I could understand the fees. Still ridiculous for something you've spent tens of thousands on, but at least they'd have an excuse of server uptime. Things that very obviously don't require this, like BMW's stupid heated seats subscription, are revolting.

I really hate how everything is moving towards monthly subscription models. I've avoided them pretty well so far, but it means I'm using old versions of software because I just want a perpetual license.
