  1. Trying to help someone who's particularly quiet get a good microphone/general audio setup for casual discord/game chatting and the occasional twitch stream. Using google, most of the results were for professional setups, which seems a bit excessive. I believe she's currently using a yeti snowball or similar, which is currently failing to pick her up a lot of the time, though she had issues before then too. I know next to nothing about audio so any advice is appreciated.
  2. Picked the 2070 super and while not regretting it (that sweet rgb), I'd recommend the 5700xt instead for literally anyone including myself. There are some perks like NVENC/Shadowplay, but unless you actively want them the 5700xt is a better deal (there also seem to be more indepth reviews of those, which makes deciding easier, specifically finding all the cards to avoid as you can see in the post above).
  3. There's no guarantee your 2070 super will be fully functional (i had to return my first one too), so I'd say this really shouldn't be the reason to swap. Meanwhile all my friends who got a 5700XT had it working without issues. If you are really hard set on it though, my gaming X is running fine, but I'd recommend just going with a cheaper model. I.e. Gigabyte windforce OC tends to be a lot cheaper (it was available for 50€ less than the gaming x when i got it) and should have sufficient cooling not to be a nuisance. Generally I'd say look for good deals instead of settling on a singular card. The MSI models seem to be priced a littler higher than what they are worth in my region, but aren't inherently bad afaik. That said, indepth look at MSI's amd cards reveals some baffling issues with cooling pads which might have been carried over from their super designs, but that's pure speculation (still a little scary to know).
  4. Okay so did some rework of the PC, putting in the new GPU after returning the broken one (which the store promptly started selling the same day, yay). Anyway, when plugging it back in, i noticed the issue: A broken power cable. It'd spark and break connection when moved slightly. Not sure why it'd just die whenever i installed something, maybe i moved (though weirdly i didn't when i was installing things on my slower drive and even moving games around? Not sure). Took the cable from the PSU Box and everything's been working fine. Thanks for your help Ehmc130, even though the issue ended up being resolved by sheer luck.
  5. No other video card and this one is now spinning up the problematic fan at idle, i only bought it because my 980ti didn't fit, originally just wanted to keep using it for another month or two. SSD speeds seem fine, surprisingly didn't crash running crystal disk. XMP is working.
  6. One of the fans is hitting the plastic, otherwise I'd probably have been able to test some games (i might still be able to, it just sounds terrifying and scares me). The fan is not spinning while idle though. I have not checked any error logs, wasn't even aware there were any. Sorry for being unclear, it just shuts off and restarts. No BSOD. (Or as mentioned in the OP, it sometimes just slows to a crawl before shutting off and restarting). It's the newest available from MSI (sorry, i forgot to mention it and only when rereading the before posting read this did i edit, which was probably when you were writing your post).
  7. Recently massively upgraded my 4-5 year old PC, it went mostly fine, including activating windows using my old key. Windows was installed via USB (win 10, 64 bit). However, when installing things on my main drive (970 evo), it'll crash randomly (no bluescreen, just black and restart). New 1tb 970 evo, various other drives (new 2tb mx500, 240gig kingston, 2 2tb seagate hdds) New 3900x New 32g trident z neo New x570 MSI gaming edge wifi (bios updated to newest) New 2070 super 1200 be quiet dark rock power (80+ gold, which powered my old 4790k and 980ti just fine, but is at this point also 4-5 years old). When crashing it may suddenly just turn off or start to slog (like 0.2fps on the desktop), before just turning off. No bluescreens. Either way, it'll always reboot. I have managed to install most of the main software by simple trying again, it'll only crash some of the time. I'm having to return my GPU soon, so i won't be able to run any diagnostics from then on, but i checked the evo with windows and it said everything was in order. I have done some light gaming (i.e. overwatch menu), but the faulty GPU is preventing anything extensive (one of the fans is hitting the plastic around it). CPU does get oddly hot with the stock cooler (still waiting for an AIO), but i haven't seen it exceed 80° in cpu temp. I'm guessing it's the PSU or Motherboard, any way to tell which?
  8. I guess it's still reliable, though the TBW of the 860 evo is still 3x as much (600 vs 200) and since i don't think any of my stuff could really take advantage of NVMe (except moving games around maybe, but doesn't the 660p hit it's cache limit then?), it's sacrificing 2/3 durability (yeah that's probably not how TBW works, but still), TLC and 100% of the M.2 slots for no performance gain. At least looking at timings on youtube didn't really make it look tempting. But then I also didn't think a SSD would be worth it as a boot drive a year ago, so if i'm missing something, you probably know better. True, it is a lot. Not really sure. I guess it is the easiest way to shave off a fair bit of money. It's just hard to not fear regretting things down the line. I tried overclocking but the thing spiked to over 90° immediately so i gave up. Not really sure what to say, my poor 4790k just really struggles in my day to day use. I do a lot at once and pretty much 80% of the time, what's struggling is the CPU (aside from the HDD, that thing struggles 24/7). Got 16gb DDR3 (friend is at 8gb DDR3), often hitting the 16gig limit but no way i can afford 32 ddr4. Idk the speed of the top of my head, unfortunately. I'm not choosing to keep stuff on my boot partition, it's all the logs, mods, etc. that need to be there at least from what i can tell. Diagnosing what part is using how much isn't fun and exactly the kind of fiddling around I want to avoid (like having to decide what stuff to delete when i want to keep it). I just use a lot of data, even with 2 2tb HDDs I have less than 800gb free space and that's after a spring cleaning and uninstalling a lot of games (and regretting it later when i had to fiddle with mods again).
  9. I considered the 660p, but bad reviews of it's performance crashing after doing large stuff and the fear of QLC dying earlier has kept me from it. I'd generally just prefer performance consistency and longevity over peak perf, but i'm not too sure. Though with only 2 m.2 slots on the x570 and only 1 on the Tomahawk i thought getting another sata would be better while waiting for a proper tlc NVMe. Are you sure on the memory? Linus recommendation was 3600 and the performance in the link varies a fair bit by speed, the 3200 having absolutely stellar 14-14-14 timings also makes me unsure when the 3600 has a seemingly fairly meh one at 17-19-19. I'm just scared i'll get 3200 and then when i have frame drops i'll wonder if i had spend that extra 70€ for a good 3600. I personally am not happy with my 4790k, it's struggling to keep up hard. 240/256gb is definitely not enough for me, as i wrote in the OP, i have a 200gb boot partition and it's basically always near maxed and i have to scramble to delete things off it (atm it has 10gb free).
  10. Short version: Trying to upgrade my SO's and my PC. Budget/Location: 1.4k€ combined if everything goes right, it's a bit flexible, but not much. The lower the better, since we're going to have to buy other stuff afterward, like a new GPU for my dying 980ti, new keyboard, maybe a new case/PSU if hers fail. US for hers, DE for mine (conversion rate of 1:1). Aim: Gaming and just general usage, a lot of multitasking. So a normal evening would be both of us playing together, watching a show at the same time and her streaming to me over discord (ideally i guess i'd stream to her too, but both our PCs are running at their limit). Generally lots of other programs running in the background as well. I tend to care more about graphics and looks, so for her it's mostly just a concern on how many cores you need for all the multitasking she does. Monitors: She has 2 1080p 60hz, i believe, one for gaming the other for multitasking. Though hopefully soon a 3rd, not sure which, but i really don't want to think about it, my wallet is screaming at me as it is. I recently got a 1440p 144hz as main for gaming, with 2 1080p 60hz for multitasking Extra: I'm hoping Microsoft will be nice and let us keep our windows licenses? At least i heard it'd be possible if you wrote support. Not aware of any peripheral issue on her end, my keyboard is basically dying though and i really need a new one (soda spill 2 years ago, so liquid+stickiness on certain keys, spacebar uneven), but i'm going to try to hold out until i have more money. Why: I just wanted to upgrade, so i already bought a x570 MSI gaming edge wifi (for the watercooler promo that was a bit ago), but then she was having issues with her PC. In short: She wants to replace her CPU/MB/Boot drive, new for peace of mind. She's currently using a 3570k and 1660ti, the latter doesn't need an upgrade yet. I'm using a 4790k and 980ti, the latter of which has been broken for years (kinda like having an unstable clock, frequently crashing in certain games, but i'm even underclocking it so idk what to do) and i really should have taken advantage of warranty (which should still last, at least i think it was 5 years, but i stupidly put an aftermarket cooler on it because the stock one was being really loud and running hot, bleh...). We are both running a HDD bootdrive, I think a SSD would help stuff a lot, even when i'm running things on a separate HDD or even my small SSD (2 2tb HDD; 1 256gb Kingston SSD) what usually sits at 100% usage is my boot drive slowing everything down. I'm also an absolute data hog and i don't really want to deal with small boot drive struggles (running a 200gb partition as boot, which has been near full for years, i have all my stuff separately but since every program in existence puts stuff on C, along with some games storing mods there, i just kinda want to not have to deal with all that and just get a 1tb SSD). Neither of us are the type of girl who flips things, so idk if we can make any money selling our old stuff, i'm planning to just give mine to a friend or something, but my friend circle is kinda upgrading in bulk, but i'm the computer expert so if anything i'd be expected to sell the old hardware (all 4000 intel stuff) and with University, minijob and upgrading stress, it's all really overwhelming and i don't think i could do it... I just don't know what to do here. It feels really limiting, any cent i spend on my stuff is money we can't use for hers so i have to find some balance and it's just hard. So any tips regarding getting good value, I'd be okay with buying 2nd hand stuff myself, etc. would be appreciated. Maybe it'd be wise to wait until next gen for my upgrade? My idea so far: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/9kHVq4 https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zY2qLJ (Idk if the lists work, but it was basically 3700x, 860 EVO on both, B450 Tomahawk for her (i thought about getting a x570 for her for peace of mind especially since idk if her brother would know how to update bios without a cpu, but it'd just make me feel down for not doing it earlier and not taking advantage of the i love ryzen thing). Ram: I tried to get 16 latency for both of us, since i read it's important. I only went with a 3200 for her because i thought 1600 1:1 would provide ample performance, especially since she cares less about FPS/Graphics and more about multitasking (though i might be completely off here and more hz is more important for that), but idk if the 3600 is really worth it being 70€ more expensive for me either. Also any ram recommendations would be nice, i basically picked these at random (limiting search to CAS 16 and 3600/3200 respectively) 3700x: It just seems like a good CPU for multitasking, idk if the 3900x might be worth it for one of us, but it's just soo expensive that i'm really not sure it's good. Was also considering the 3600, but since cores are the main concern, idk. It also seems to be not great on a 200€ motherboard to get a 200€ CPU. Td:dr; Budget 1400€ slightly flexible, but lower is better due to other buys down the line Task: Heavy multitasking while gaming DE: 1 Zen 2, 1 Ram, 1+tb SSD (planned on getting a 5700xt but with the budget i don't think i can make that work) US: 1 CPU+MB+Ram+Boot SSD
  11. I don't think they'd do that, it also lists SLI support on it's page. It just seems to be a database error and it doesn't recognize that the Motherboard is sli compatible (at least that's what i think). Well so since it definitely does support it, it doesn't matter either way. If it comes to it i could at least fit it myself (i think i should be able to do that, though i'd rather not). Last thing i'm concerned about is that power issue ( http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/2jrt1b/psarequest_possible_reoccurring_problem_with_the/). I'm wondering if he should still go for it, the warranty would cover any damage to any part including the motherboard and probably even offer a replacement in case it does appear, but it sounds pretty inconvenient. Do you think z97 extreme6 suffer from it as well?
  12. I think going for the Z97 then is better for him, 6 cores aren't that useful for gaming and the money saved by not going x99 is enough to get DDR4 ram anyway when necessary. Talked with him about which manufacturer and he said he definitely wants that black with blue hightlights. I could only find Asrock in the range between 100 and 200 which had both SLI and dual bios support. So far the z97 extreme4 is the best blue one i could find. Though the shops website not allowing SLI configurations on it is still confusing me. The extreme3 and extreme6 both allow it, so i guess it's just an error, or is there something with the extreme4 that somehow doesn't allow for SlI 980ti/titan x. Also anyone knows if the extreme4 is fine or should he go for a different one? Also heard about that power issue concerning it, but there aren't that many that seem to be affected. And with the 5 year warranty it should be covered, i guess.
  13. He wants the Titan for the 12GBs of ram and i mean he really wants it. I tried arguing with him about it but no luck. Though i can kind of see his point as games like AC:Unity and Shadow of Mordor with HD texture pack are actually hitting the 6gb already, i can imagine that Titan x sli would make use of it's higher vram in the future. I personally would go for a 980 ti (if i had the money), but he is set on getting a Titan. I went with the 5930k for the PCIe lanes because i still can't figure out why the shops website wouldn't allow a Titan X to go on a motherboard with 2 16x slots running at 8x. It would be nice to get some clarification on that front. Why the different motherboard? I chose the Asrock for it's colours (since he wants that black-blue/cyan), is there something wrong with it? I mean many here chose a MSI one so there probably is something i'm missing. According to my research, high end graphic cards currently run at almost 400W. So with an overclocked SLI setup and the rest of the system it seemed as 1000W would actually be reachable and with capacitor aging not even enough. To be fair, the shop's prices are in line with german overall pricing and there are some other benefits (5-year warranty, them being nice about upgrading). And honestly, i don't trust myself with being able to build it without breaking something. The only problem with the SSD is that it costs quite a bit and anything that has an additional cost delays his further purchases. He isn't really that much into professional video editing, though he wants to be able to do it in case. So would you recommend going for Z97? Is the next CPU gen going to be compatible with either? Or if not, the ram? He has already had a flashy case (which he is selling right now) and is looking for another one, so i guess he isn't going to regret it that easily.
  14. So i've been trying to select the parts for a PC of a Friend who asked me to do this, but i don't have that much experience and i am really afraid of doing something wrong and i am running out of time (should be finished on monday and i'm so nervous and stressed because of it that i can't sleep...). The actual PC building is done by the store, which is a german company. The PC case is likely going to be a Thermaltake Overseer RX-1: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Thermaltake/Overseer_RX-I/and the rest of the parts should be in line with the black base with blue highlights. If there is a better case on a similar price level it would be nice to know, though it's mostly about the looks. The requirements i've been given for the rest of the parts are: An overclocked Titan X. Capable of handling a 2nd one while requiring as little changes as possible in hardware. (should the power supply be ready for them immediately or should he upgrade when the 2nd one is bought?) 16GB of ram. Easily upgradable to 32. Optimized for gaming, but should be able to do some other stuff like rendering, video editing and especially streaming. (can't really say what type of games since the stuff he plays is all across the board, but he wants to play on very high settings including AA and/or high resolutions while maintaining good fps) Overclockable, not quite that important but still i was told to consider it. 2TB HDD. (he is fine with dealing with additional load speed, startup and the pc being generally less responsive due to not having a SSD, the hdd shouldn't be too slow though. I'm wondering if he should get one regardless, what do you think?) Dual Bios, important though not absolutely necessary for him. Upgradeability is quite important to him. "Good" CPU cooler. The build i have been thinking about: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/T7pBpg The prices there don't really matter, but i figured it might be easier for you to overwie it like that. It could go higher in price a bit, but it's still kind of the max and the goal is to get something cheaper than that. If you switch to germany the prices will be closer to the actual value he has to pay, but at the same time some of the parts just don't have any price there... I also considered going for a 4790k with an asrock extreme4 z97 (and an according ddr3 ram), but i'm not really sure if it can actually run titan x sli. For some reason the website of the store doesn't think so and i am not sure why. And then there is upgradability as well as the processor only having 16 PCIe lanes. I've seen in many tests that it doesn't really matter as pcie 3.0 8x is still fast enough, the website implying that Titan X Sli wouldn't run on that motherboard really threw me off as i was sure it at least had 8x in dual mode and was sli certified; the internet search didn't yield any results. Budget: The limit is around 2900€ (including OS) with the items being bought from that store. I'm not sure if i am allowed to link them as that is kind of advertising i guess, but their website is mostly in german even if you set it to english, so any non-german speakers would probably not have a nice time browsing through it anyway (though names and terminology is mostly the same). I am sorry that it'll be a bit harder to figure it out, but for reference the build from above is ~ 2900€ when you buy from the store (with mostly the GPU and CPU being significantly more expensive compared to the us). Please tell me if i made any mistakes like choosing parts too large for the case, while i'm familiar with PCs i am still unexperienced especially when it comes to builds and would appreciate any help.
