My very first rig had a FX-6300 paired with a GTX 660Ti. Eventually got a GTX 970 later and overclocked my 6300 to 4.6GHz stable

Well I've been wondering for a while! I bought that prebuilt after my old custom died, I didn't want to wait for parts... Now I'm craving to do a build!! I guess I can wait tho. Thanks for the feedback!

3600MHz is the current sweet spot (3200MHz minimum &/or if budget is über tight)... what Ryzen 4xxx will need is anybodys guess, atm.

Personally I'm just happy Zen 3 will still be on an AM4 socket. 2017-2021(+?) socket support is really solid 5 years of people not needing to buy a new motherboard to get a decent CPU upgrade, especially for those that bought a good motherboard to begin with.

SirWendall reacted to akio123008 in PC automatically changed screen resolution
The unsharp effect is because you're using VGA. Even at 1280x1024 you can clearly see that VGA is kind of blurry compared to DVI/HMDI/DP.

As far as resolution is concerned, if the monitor is 900p, then the resolution should be set to 900p. If that doesn't look good, it's because of what I mentioned above.

Edit: the converter you're using is probably also the reason for the weird native resolution that gets detected.

I honestly like Nvidia's drivers better when it comes to performance. Its your preference/what you play on PC that'll determine what you get. I'd look up benchmark tests with the R5 3600 and 2070 / 5700 XT.

Just noticed that I was struggling to detect two sticks of memory on my 8700K during a maintenance session when I was just "hand-mounting" the CPU cooler.

However when i tried to actually mount the cooler (its actually a waterblock) with the screws and proper retention, then it detected the two sticks of memory just fine.

I didnt know if this was a thing or just my combination of board (z370-i) and particular CPU that needed a bit of pressure for all pins to make contact

Hey! So I'm running the same CPU/Mobo as you. I'm able to get 4.7GHz out of my chip and it runs stable. You can tweak these settings in the BIOS. I used this guide here ---> https://www.tweaktown.com/guides/7481/tweaktowns-ultimate-intel-skylake-overclocking-guide/index5.html
I'm also running the same XMP profile of RAM too, except mine is Corsair  Also 1.4 volts isn't the healthiest, but read more into the guide and it should help you with BIOS settings!

Hello all, I'm bored working from home so I've decided to take on overclocking my i7 6700k.
I'm learning it's less scary and complicated than I originally thought, which makes me regret not applying a light overclock when I bought my parts ~3 years ago.

Here are my relevant specs and what I'm at right now. Also please tell me if something looks off, I'm new to overclocking.

CPU: i7 6700k @ 4.6 ghz, 1.355v (Didn't mess with it a lot, pretty sure I can go slightly lower)
Cooler: Noctua NH-U9S (I have 2 fans on this in a push-pull config but I don't think it makes a difference)
RAM: Team T-Force DARK PRO 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 (using the xmp profile, 3200 mhz, 1.4v; Didn't push the timings)
    Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7
    Case: HAF XB EVO

At 4.6 ghz, my cpu idles at about 35-40C, under load it tops at ~75C. (I think that's typical?)
I got it stable 4.7 ghz @ 1.375v, but it started getting up to 85C and I decided that was out of my comfort zone.
To test stability I'm running Prime95's torture test for 5 minutes. If it doesn't crash after I call it good and so far I haven't had any problems.

Is purchasing a Cryorig R1 Ultimate or a Noctua D15 cooler a good option if I want to get the most out of overclocking my current CPU with the possibility of re-using said cooler when I upgrade? (No idea when I'll upgrade but hopefully not this year.) Also I prefer air coolers, no AIO water shenanigans. Is 1.4V for a CPU OC the "safe limit"? I haven't seen a consensus.
    Thanks!

SirWendall reacted to Lil Ramen in Why is it so hard to find new old socket motherboards?
I had an OEM C2Q9550 from an Optiplex 960 that had 8 GB DDR2. Only problem was that it didn't work.... at all. So I took it into my internship before the summer and showed about 5 kids how to build a PC and identify all the parts, I forgot it there when my dad picked me up that day and haven't asked my old boss for it back. From it I also lost an ATI X700 Pro and a 500 GB HDD. I might text her later today and see if she still has it in the back warehouse. It wasn't working and I got the system nonworking from my mom's friend who works in I.T.

SirWendall reacted to Lil Ramen in Why is it so hard to find new old socket motherboards?
Well the reason I'd be using $40 of CPU is budget. Just the other night I ordered a R7 250 for $26 and that'll go into my project PC along with a 500 GB I ordered for $13. Already I have a SFF case, I3 2120, 4 GB RAM and the motherboard but that's all OEM. The next part that I am saving up for is a logysis case I found for $35/$40 that comes with a 480w PSU. If the mobo and CPU dont work which I kinda doubt they will at this point (2 years sitting around being tinkered with to run) I want a backup plan. The case is Micro ATX so I wanted a high end 775 as my back up.
