    Seeing cables and wires is not a problem that needs to be solved, and if you dont want to see them inside your case dont get a case with a window.
     
    This seems like a nightmare of compatibility problems that will end up driving up the cost of motherboards further. Motherboard manufactures will have to deal with more SKUs, that result in different packaging to denote this dumb config. People will inevitably buy motherboards that dont work with the case they bought resulting in more returns and open box products with increased confusion for new builders. And motherboard manufactures will likely increase the cost of all their motherboards to off set their cost of adding these SKUs and their increase costs that will result from it.
     
    Meanwhile, motherboards are already ridiculously priced because of the stupid garbage "features" that manufactures insist on putting on almost every motherboard especially if the motherboard has a high end chipset. Want to get a motherboard without a silly useless metal cover on your PCIE slot? Impossible, and your MB cost more because that useless bit of metal is there. Want to get a MB without RGB? without the needless plastic covers? without a built in IO shield? without a LCD screen? without WIFI? or without a remote button to release the GPU from the PICE slot? Your only options left if you dont want that stuff are the lowest end chipsets. And all that stuff little by little drives up the cost motherboards to the point where we now have $700+ consumer motherboards that have been bedazzled so manufactures can get higher margins while not actually adding value to the end user. And now buying a high end or even just a mid level chipset without these useless "features" needlessly driving up the price is impossible.
     
    And Wifi might be a "nice to have if you need to troubleshoot something" but at this point its kind of hard to buy a motherboard without it and motherboards with it cost at least $20+ more with it. And because manufactures insistence on adding all these "features" so they have more to print on the box you end with dumb configs where motherboards have 2.5GB LAN, 10GB LAN and WIFI. Is there even 1 person that will ever actually have a legitimate use case for both of those LAN ports and WIFI in the life of that PC?

    No denying its convenient but there's a lot of caveats to that idea.
     
    If anything goes wrong with that connector you fry the GPU AND motherboard, rather than a GPU power socket that can (in theory) be cheaply replaced and a cable which also can be cheaply replaced.  I suck at soldering and could probably replace a 12VHWPR connector if I absolutely needed to, but a burnt trace on a PCB (such as the PCIe connector) is practically impossible to fix.  The actual socket on the motherboard, yeah I wouldn't fancy that either.
     
    It takes up precious space on the motherboard that can be better utilised for other things.
     
    GPU manufacturers margins are already paper thin and making a PCB longer costs more, plus putting the PSU power connector in the most convenient place for routing on the PCB is far cheaper than having to run longer power planes and having restrictions on where the VRMs and traces can go due to the power coming in from a pre-defined location.  Carrying high currents across a PCB is no easy task and does have losses, compared to a cable.
     
    Quite a few modern GPUs draw barely any power from the PCIe socket due to it being far more practical to bring in all the power from a more suitable location.  Remember you also want to keep the 12v well away from the really low voltage traces while also keeping all power traces as short as possible to avoid losing power to heat.  Overall it can be done, but it makes manufacturing the GPUs more expensive, which is the last thing we want right now with prices already so high.

    Same with motherboards, the reason the CPU power is usually in the top corner is this is right in the middle of the usually two banks of VRM mosfets.  It means you need less motherboard traces for 12v power.  The cheapest and safest solution is to bring in the power as close to where you need it as possible, not have it travel needlessly across PCB traces.

    Summary
    Nvidia 545.84 driver seems to cause many issues ranging from flickering black boxes on the screen, application crashes and full system crash when GPU load is spiking.

    My thoughts
    I stumbled upon this because I had this issue. Initially I thought it was a CPU issue (recently upgraded) or GPU issue (started thinking my old RTX2070 is failing) because I started having some flickering black boxes on the screen while watching videos in browser and had a system crash two times recently, but yesterday I started having repeatable crashes and today I had 100% repro on launching a game. Found the reddit thread, tried just changing the driver through geforce experience to the creator version that is previous driver version and it didn't solve the problem, but doing a proper cleaning with DDU and installation of previous GRD version did fix it.
     
    What is noticeable is that I had a 100% repro that was shutting down my PSU completely when launching a game, not a system crash and reboot, but my PSU did shut down completely and I had to start the system again with power button. And I have a system configuration that should be okay on 400W PSU, that is running on 700W Gold PSU that's barely 2 years old. Multiple people are stating just restarts, so maybe my case of full shut down is unique for some reason.
     
    I suspect that the driver may be causing some audio crackling issues as well, which started happening for me around the same time, but it's too soon for me to tell if this issue is gone.
     
    I think this is important to be publicised both for people to know about the issue and avoid this driver and also to put some focus of nvidia driver team on solving the situation quickly.

    My only big gripe with the any sponsors LMG would partner with are any games that have gambling-esque features built in to the game (e.g., Raid Shadow Legends, World of Warships, etc).
     
    I wouldn’t be against the sponsors if LMG were to put up any sort of disclaimer, linking to gambling addiction resources. Same thing if they chose to get sponsored by a brand focused of making tobacco / nicotine products. They need to be direct about the warning and have it be linked before the sponsor’s link.

    As someone who spent a lot of time in this specific game, I'd like to summarise the problem in some reasonable short form:
     
    The general outrage is about gaijin slowly boiling the frog by making grind harder and harder again, and what lit the fire was the "we know what's better for the game and for the player" approach to damage control in the first place. They have a track record o handling outrages, stepping back for a moment and then introducing those planed changes anyway piece by piece, step by step anyway over time.
      Most of the players are angry about the economy being built in a way that you cannot keep playing the vehicle that you have unlocked because you run out of in-game currency which is spent on ammunition and repairs, and you collect it for good scores in the match. You cannot have good scores in the match when you have a new vehicle that is stripped of the better part of its functionality so you need to "spade it from stock" meaning you need to unlock it's features, so you keep running in circles by running out of in-game currency and having to go back to lower tiered vehicles to farm currency in order to play the best vehicles.
      Their PR responses to this issue states that the reasoning behind it is to make sure players won't progress too fast and they'll progress forward once they got skillful enough with the vehicles of current tier - which would be fine if: they would actually invest into teaching new players new mechanics at each tier extensively rather than purposely pushing them into frustration they were not selling premium top tier vehicles which explicitly allow new players to play high tier gameplay right away without the required skill for this level, which effectively destroys the game for others playing at those tiers, and those new players as well if they don't know the mechanics well.
      They are talking about continuously processing the feedback while most of the community is disillusioned about the game forums being way to forward feedback while it's just a facade. There are processes set up on the forums for passing the feedback that leave feedback rotting in the forums for ages with hardly ever getting passed to devs because it's throttled down to one suggestion per category per month. Classic divide and conquer causing players of each game modes argue who's got it worse.  
    Additional notes from me as my personal opinions:
     
    The game employs F.O.M.O. and Bait & Switch tactics on time-limited events and sales of vehicles. The game network architecture is not really what company stated (although years ago), it runs as peer2peer where clients simulate game state and dedicated servers decide who's right and merge the outcome into what then is stored as server replay. The game updates keep faking upgrading the content every two or three major updates - VFX & SFX by bumping the sounds' power (not a sound guy) and emissive color on flames (so it burns brightly) and explosions to steadily fade them back over time. It's kind of like the endless staircase sound effect… Client replays are not representative of what happens in your game locally and there is some post processing hiding malice and errors before storing a client replays. You could get back to cover and the game would ignore that move and you'd get killed with killcam and client local replay both showing that you were standing there in the open. You have to capture footage live to have a proof of shenanigans happening in the game. The game rigs odds in matchmaking and in-game damage simulation (& few other things) against the tasks for seasons to artificially slow down the progression in them to extend the session play time. Game's PR mostly ignores arcade game mode, supporting mostly realistic mode-oriented content creators, so effectively more vocal realistic battles community is treating players playing arcade as just a small fraction of newbies on training wheels that should jump over to realistic modes, while server replays history proves there's roughly the same amount of both players. The arcade shows the flaws of the game better and having many eyes constantly on it with footage from live game could quickly disillusion too many players about what the game is. I have no idea how this game got certified for consoles and is in the best on deck on steam when the controller support is terrible, moreover the kbm keybinding are cluster to handle. The game could be a best combined arms game on the market if not for predatory monetization strategies and piles of core game issues never being addressed

    I agree that this is a valid use, but the sensation of speed may be achieved with change of camera fov while you're accelerating and various games are doing exactly this and using some simple blurred lines as "wind", but not exactly motion blur. 
     
    I feel like Linus did omit this part of the problem while he focused specifically on overuse of blur in non-vehicular games where you walk and have blur while turning around...

    Another justification for motion blur are racing games. Motion blur can increase the perceived speed of the car significantly.

    This is almost, but not quite the same as saying unions reduce pay for the highest skilled workers. Compressing the upper tail of the income distribution is essentially pulling wages down for high performers/highly-skilled labor. 
     
    It is possible to make the argument that a good chunk of LMG would fall under the semi-skilled category.

    I have a question for Linus: If motion blur is only for hide low fps, tell me how to get the speed sensation on racing games without having a huge map, because the cars on these games doesn't really have the "real life speed", otherwise the map would feel much smaller.

    Discord also was able to displace Mumble/TeamSpeak etc. as it was very easy to setup. You didn't need dedicated hardware / money because the business model was different.

    Gonna have to disagree that discord is only popular cuase MSN Messager and Skype were worse. Neither werre built with live communities in mind. You had to know before hand who you were connecting to and adding the live community feature plus everything else discord has would have been a radical overhaul. Discord works because it take th old BBoard concept and takes it live letting you connect with people of similar interest by searching for or being invited to a persistent group instead of a one off session and preserving old longs so you cna catch up. It's the LMG forums but with an option for live feed back without reload and a idea home for the old Role Play boards. None of which MSN Messenger or skype could do without a massive overhaul.

    I still have the shipping box and most everything still intact. GPU is in another system, but also in storage. Valve was indeed very hands off once we got the machines and it was the "testers" that got together to make our own Steam Group to better talk amongst ourselves. I still use the 300β tag from the 'The 300 club" group on steam all these years later lol. I do remember registering mine on Cynagen's site, but not my number since I don't recall the counting direction haha.

    Also you should definitely give share the recovery stick with LTT, the comparison between them and now would be cool, but I wonder if that system would still be supported by steam.

    I wasn't part of that group but I was part of the people trying to get their hands on one. All machines were the same, though there was an idea that we'd get 3 ranges of spec machines in it (i3, i5, i7). Though as can be seen, only 1 config ever got made formally for testers.
     
    For what it's worth, like with Stadia, I also saved a number of things for this machine in case I ever got one and I almost did too but lost it to an ebay bot. I've gone ahead and thrown some of the old installers I've saved from a while back onto archive.org in case anyone wants em. I know there's some I don't have, but I think the effort counts. I also cant guarantee it will fix the issues LMG had with theirs, since that sounds like hardware failure to me, but if they feel like giving it another swing or 5:

    Some images of the white body prototypes, including the listing I almost got. You'll notice, the drilled hole is missing, which signified its 1 of 300 IDs. There were for sure more than 300 of these, but for the beta program, it was 300, which makes that ebay listing I lost all the more interesting as it looks to be a prototype top mixed with the beta's bottom.

    I remember this time so fondly despite my huge disappointment. 

    Steam machines failed imho cuz they were money grabbing one offs, 3rd parties didnt want to make an actual PC/console hybrid (e.g in the same way they got into laptop making or phone making) but were like "Hey young man wonna get into the hype train and get a super duper cewl STEAM MACHINE?"  "well then you have to pay 3K for a piece of sh1t with an mid grade graphics card" ps back then prices started to get higher but they were nowhere near as ridiculous as nowadays so 3K for a PC with an midgrade GPU wasnt the norm but rather only a "steam machine thing" 

    I remember reserving a cool domain cant remember exactly but something like steambox.com or something like that and had in mind to actually make custom mini PCs that were cheap and took advantage of the ability of AMD integrated graphics to crossfire with some entry lvl AMD GPUs (which would allow for low cost solutions and better thermals for a tight mini itx formfactor)  but I was waiting for the next gen of that +DX12 was lurking around with all the brand and engine agnostic multi gpu rendering promises, because what was currently there although promising wasnt that good for me to pony up my savings and start a business based on the entire "steam machine" deal I wanted first to be sure that the PCs I would make wouldnt suck at gaming not just be cheap, but then AMD dropped support for that and in the same timeframe steam machines died out so I was left with the domain (which also expired years ago I think ) lol .

    I was in a chat group people on Steam to discuss the machines amongst ourselves, I believe we had over 120+ people confirmed with the same config: Intel Core i5 4570, 16GB of RAM, 1TB Seagate SSHD and Zotac reference GTX 780. I too remember hearing that were were supposed to be higher and lower end models, but I hadn't seen or heard about any of those from other testers. As far the CPU thermals go, they were completely fine, I don't recall specific numbers but it was well within what I would consider comfortable range for CPUs of that generation, the GPU is what struggled the most. with the plastic shroud cover on top, it would very easily idle at 60-65c with a fan speed usually in the 30-40% range and any gaming load promising it would hit 80c with a very particularly noisy fan, given that it was a blower style.

    Hey! Finally a video I actually have some hands on experience with, for once.

    I was one of the 300 testers, I still have my box and the case for the Steam Machine, but I had to part it out because the SFX PSU died and I was using the Steam Machine as my primary PC, SFX PSUs were not cheap, so I ended up doing a case transfer with it. That led me to the issue you guys talked about in the video, the rear plate for the GPU. My 780 was listed as a Zotac model, so I  actually got into contact with a couple of people over there, who were more than willing to send me the bracket for the 780 so I could use it in a normal case. 
     
     
    There were some units made like this that were actually sent to game devs for testing/dev purposes, but the "300" units sent to the mostly randomly selected people and were sent in heavy wooden crates (photo 1),each have a small engraving on the lid of one of the specific vent holes, as there were 300 of them, the mark indicated which number machine you had, I believe mine was unit 094. (photo 2) I couldn't see the mark too well in your video, but you appear to have gotten one of the 300 beta units sent to a person.
     
    A couple of other things mentioned in the video: We were encouraged to open up the Steam Machine, even if you received one of these, doing any sort of reporting or actual testing was not required at all. I was involved with a Jira forum they gave us access to, to report any issues, but otherwise Valve was extremely hands off. I remember being told something to the effect of.. "the Steam Machine remains property of Valve, but it is yours to do with as you wish". This included some people who installed Windows on it immediately. Also, there was some thought given to a little upgrading, because the mount for the drives (photo 4) had an additional SATA power and Data cable routed to it, I expanded my Steam Machine with a 256GB SSD, but my model and many other testers came with a 1TB Seagate SSHD 2.5" drive. The whole top cover can be removed with only a single philips, they definitely didn't try to deter anyone from opening it up.
     
    As far the layout of the GPU goes, it originally came with a plastic top cover piece (photo 3), but the vast majority of testers I know actually removed it for far better thermals, but it would technically press fit against the GPU power cables and keep them in place that way.

    (I also still have the original SteamOS recovery stick that came with mine, if you want me to dump it or send it to LTT staff, let me know!)

    I have to second to this one - LMG shouldn't affiliate itself with Gaijin Entertainment if you want to keep up to Linus' principles.
    War Thunder is doing things such as:
    Pay2Win premium content - sell vehicles that dominate specific ranks in matchmaking while not paying players can barely progress their vehicles in those ranks. Bait&Switch on premium content - Release new vehicles that are explicitly over powered at a rank they are being introduced, then once the sales of those slow down, the amount of those vehicles have saturated the matchmaking, they move the position of those vehicles around to places where they don't have any competitive edge anymore, or they nerf them mechanically for the same effect. Rig the odds of in-game (damage) mechanics so players spend more time in game with the season tasks. Maintain a facade of listening to the players feedback while actually Q&As are obviously questions prepared or cherry picked by the company to be answered in a way that suggest what's next, but never actually address the bigger issues in the game. Since the introduction of seasons two or three years ago, the game is heavily constructed around FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), where if you want to have unique content that is being added to the game, you have to constantly (every day for few hours) play the season and events. Give out promotional rewards that are supposed to go to the new players, in a way that everyone can claim them, so then they can create a negative premium currency balance on (not a new one) account that is blocking some activities in-game. Moderation on their forums not accepting any critique by the terms of the forums, culling out any constructive critique/cutting off discussions of whats happening in the game when someone shows proof of the game malice I would want for LMG to research the topic so Linus can ask himself whether he'd want his kids to be playing a game like this and whether he should affiliate himself with such company, by promoting this product.
     
    Btw, I'm not active on the forums but I've heard about this thread watching the WAN show, so there's that. I like that you're doing this and I hope more big channels will afford to do so as well.

Give out promotional rewards that are supposed to go to the new players, in a way that everyone can claim them, so then they can create a negative premium currency balance on (not a new one) account that is blocking some activities in-game. Moderation on their forums not accepting any critique by the terms of the forums, culling out any constructive critique/cutting off discussions of whats happening in the game when someone shows proof of the game malice I would want for LMG to research the topic so Linus can ask himself whether he'd want his kids to be playing a game like this and whether he should affiliate himself with such company, by promoting this product.
     
    Btw, I'm not active on the forums but I've heard about this thread watching the WAN show, so there's that. I like that you're doing this and I hope more big channels will afford to do so as well.

    I have to second to this one - LMG shouldn't affiliate itself with Gaijin Entertainment if you want to keep up to Linus' principles.
    War Thunder is doing things such as:
    Pay2Win premium content - sell vehicles that dominate specific ranks in matchmaking while not paying players can barely progress their vehicles in those ranks. Bait&Switch on premium content - Release new vehicles that are explicitly over powered at a rank they are being introduced, then once the sales of those slow down, the amount of those vehicles have saturated the matchmaking, they move the position of those vehicles around to places where they don't have any competitive edge anymore, or they nerf them mechanically for the same effect. Rig the odds of in-game (damage) mechanics so players spend more time in game with the season tasks. Maintain a facade of listening to the players feedback while actually Q&As are obviously questions prepared or cherry picked by the company to be answered in a way that suggest what's next, but never actually address the bigger issues in the game. Since the introduction of seasons two or three years ago, the game is heavily constructed around FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), where if you want to have unique content that is being added to the game, you have to constantly (every day for few hours) play the season and events.
