That's not a cpu issue, it is a motherboard issue. Any motherboard that doesn't support 4/4/4/4 bifurcation will have issue regardless of if it is Ryzen apu or intel.

    Hi everyone,

TLDR: I just want to warn all homelab enthusiasts that APUs like the 5600G or 5700G, and apparently also the newer 8000G series can have issues with some PCIe cards, when paired with some motherboards. In my case, with a 5700G + B550 + E10M20-T1 (Synology), the card is not detected at all. I expect the same with the QM2 cards from QNAP with an integrated NIC.

When buying the Cezanne 5700G, and using a B550 motherboard, I saw that PCIe was going down from PCIe 4.0 to PCIe 3.0. What I didn't know is that the bifurcation options also go from

    x8/x8 x8/x4/x4 x4/x4/x4/x4 to
x8/x8 x8/x4/x4 This apparently breaks compatibility with cards like the E10M20-T1. Beware ! Maybe it is not linked at all, but the coincidence is too big.

It's sad, because this config makes for an excellent Ryzen SFF homelab machine with very fast NVMe storage, avoiding IPMI powered server MB by having an APU with a graphics output. It certainly helps with the budget, as server grade stuff is expensive.

For now, I'm using a 5900X without graphics, because luckily AM4 boards can boot without a graphics card installed.

It's really depending on your usage, there isn't really a simple answer to the question. I have two servers running. The first is my "primary" it handles my storage/backups, plex, minecraft, home assistant, vpn, generic windows vm. While the other backs up the data on the first and runs a windows vm to handle my security cameras and ubiquiti controller (yes windows, I know... but blue iris only runs on windows). While the first system could  have resources to also run my cameras and networking. I view them as being a critical service and prefer to run them on a seperate machine rather then pushing them all to a single system and increasing a potential of an outage. Worst case if one system goes down I can spin up the services on the other and I have a second copy of my data if the worst were to happen to one of the systems.

Not sure how to categorize my hardware hoard... I've only got one server hosting software (and storing data) that I care about, but I've also got "real" servers to back it up...

    "Production" System:

1x PowerEdge R730XD (primary NAS and storage server):
TrueNAS Scale 2x Xeon E5-2637 v4 256 GB DDR4 2400 (8x 32GB) 12x 12 TB WD Red-equivalent shucked drives (one RAIDz3 vdev) Broadcom 10gbe/1gbe Ethernet mezzanine card Intel P3605 1.6 TB NVMe SSD (Plex database and DVR) Intel P3605 1.6 TB NVMe SSD (assorted container applications) Nvidia Quadro P2000 (Plex transcoding) This might get replaced with a whitebox sooner than later. It's loud and it drinks down about 200 watts.

    "Lab" systems:

    2x PowerEdge R730s:
    Proxmox 2x Xeon E5-2697 v4 (18c 36t) 512 GB DDR4 2133 Reg ECC (16x 32 GB) Broadcom 10gbe/1gbe Ethernet mezzanine card 2x 1000w 80+ platinum power supplies 2x 120 GB Intel SATA SSD (boot mirror) Sun/Oracle F80 400 GB (ZFS caching) These are still a work in progress.

    1x Precision Rack R7910:
Windows 10 Pro 2x Xeon E5-2637 v4 2c 1000w 80 plus platinum power supplies 256 GB DDR4 2400 (8x 32GB) Broadcom 10gbe/1gbe Ethernet mezzanine card 2x RTX 3060 12 GB 8x 200 GB HGST SAS SSDs This one's for playing with machine learning software, mostly Stable Diffusion and Topaz Labs video enhance AI.

    3x PowerEdge R620:
    Proxmox 2x Xeon E5-2680 v2 2x 750w 80 plus power supplies 256 GB DDR3 1600 (16x 16 GB) Broadcom 10gbe/1gbe Ethernet mezzanine card Mellanox ConnectX-3 40gb InfiniBand NIC 2x 120 GB Intel SSD (boot mirror) 1x PowerEdge R720XD:
    TrueNAS Scale 2x 1000w 80 plus power supplies 256 GB DDR3 1600 (16x 16GB) Broadcom 10gbe/1gbe Ethernet mezzanine card Mellanox ConnectX-3 40gb dual port InfiniBand card 2x 120 GB Intel SSD (boot mirror) 24x 600gb 10k SAS HDD (storage, 4x 6-drive RAIDz1 vdevs)
This is the "old" cluster, mostly cobbled together with cheap barebones and "parts or not working" systems. I should probably liquidate these.

This doesn't count the menagerie of random desktops, "retro" machines, and Cisco routers I've amassed over the last few years...

If you can find a Soundbar with multiple HDMI inputs and HDMI passthrough that supports the features you want, yes of course that's an option.

Latency? Should be no different than when using an AVR - for couch gaming, it's not gonna be an issue. I game using an Xbox One S connected to a Yamaha RX-V385 without any noticeable input lag.

Plex and 4K HDR should also be no problem - I do the exact same thing w/ my Xbox One S and play 4K HDR content on the Plex App without issue.
They should all be fairly comparable.

I would check out each of their reviews on RTings.com - it's basically the best Home Theatre review site I've ever come across. You can also do side by side comparisons of different products.

Thank god content creators like Linus are finally starting to complain about the state of TDPs of modern chips...

Call me a boomer, but I don't want more than 100-150W and on my CPU and 200-250W on my GPU. 250W for GPUs used to be only for high end Ti cards.... Also, if a card goes from 200W to 300W and is 1.5x faster, I don't call it a better card. I just call it a factory super-overclocked card...

400W is already a lot of heat (and energy) and with heat waves becoming more and more common in the summer, I don't want a 800W tower heating an already super hot room...

Yeah sure AC exists, but I think we know deep down it's not the best solution (I won't go down that rabbit hole in an online forum...). Not convinced ? LTT is making videos about putting your PC in a grow tent, so... Yeah we are there already 🙂

Pro Tip : if you game a lot with a powerful rig, especially now with 3080s+ TDP, when choosing you first apartment, avoid small studios that have big sliding glass windows directly pointed towards ~South, it is gonna be hell, especially with the heat of the computer (having outside blinds helps a bit reflecting the sun but then you really are the cliché of a nerd living in the dark).

They just gave me 3 days of free trial after contacting them. My docker that was not doing so great is now rocking full power (*hum* ...). Thanks to a working VPN with port forward feature ! Also, if you mention you are thinking about switching from PIA, they will give you a 10% code to motivate you. I will certainly switch to AirVPN.

The only downside I see from this free trial is the lack of an easy to use Chrome extension. And their desktop app is kinda fishy, compared to PIA...

I live in EU, and have recently had problems connecting to US Hulu and alike. I'm not an advanced user like you, but idk.. Maybe Express VPN is worth their 80€ a year or whatever they're asking. Although that doesn't work with Netflix for me neither. Idk... And I'm not using NordVPN, because they really do not treat their customers like they should - along with that fiasco that they had with user info leakage.

I really thought PIA would be the redemption, it's sad to hear they're making silly mistakes and loosing customers

I'm also about to abandon PIA for this exact reason. This issue has been occurring for weeks, even with previous-gen that are reportedly still working with the current port forwarding API (Spain, Iran, Italy).

There is a user-created script for port forwarding pfSense available at https://github.com/fm407/PIA-NextGen-PortForwarding/blob/master/pia-nextgen-pf.sh, but I'm not going to rewrite this for FreeBSD if it is likely to break. I'm very close to requesting a refund and moving to AirVPN for their permanent port forwarding, even after using PIA for over 3 years.

    Hi everyone,
This is a rant. I'm not happy with PIA anymore. I also cannot advise anyone to go with them at the moment, until they fix the issues. The why is below.

The problems have started massively since they started doing a migration to new servers, which now apparently support Wireguard by default. This is the new standard for VPN. In itself, it is a good thing, BUT....

First, I have some dockers that can automagically detect the assigned Forwarded Port from PIA and use it. Since they started the migration, my docker was not doing great (let's leave it at that *wink wink*). What was my surprise when I looked at the logs and saw that the X server was not detected anymore as "Port Forward friendly" (but is still listed as such in the doc...). Switched to another one in the list, but then the URL to get the port was down. This URL is official, and mentioned in their doc, so.... It is the one that all scripts for dockers use to retrieve the forwarded port assigned to your VPN session. So for now, the port forward feature can be considered as non existent.
Also, while looking at this doc page, what was my surprise when I learned that this port forwarding option would only, for now, be available in the desktop app with the next gen servers, which is basically breaking compatibility with Linux or dockers.... So even if they fix the previous issue I mentioned, how long until the old gen servers are brought down ? There are threads popping about this in unRaid forums too. I came here because they are a sponsor of the channel.

Secondly, and this is way worse. Since the migration, I have frequently had my apps on iPad, on my Pixel and also on the browser extension have trouble to connect. Wireguard is supposedly faster and better, but for now the experience is the opposite. You have to turn it off and on, reboot stuff, instead of it just working. Also, some servers stop working but are still listed, so if you connect to them (for me, the swiss one), then you can't navigate the web.
Today, I launched my browser and my PIA browser extension was stuck in a loop trying to connect, preventing me from browsing the web in the meantime. There is no way to switch the server (if it's broken) or to disconnect. Waited 5 minutes, tried to "on/off" it, restarted the browser, couldn't do anything. Now, I have disabled it altogether and came here to rant about it.

I used hide.me previously, I may go back to them. I think the biggest problem with them was the price, the rest was really nice (maybe slightly slower than PIA). This sucks, because with unraid, there are a lot of dockers pre-scripted with PIA in mind for port forwarding, which is really, really, really nice.

Razer Blades are a pain to buy here, same for Gigabyte Aeros. LG Grams are unavailable in the entire EU officially. Dell and Lenovos are much more easy to buy with local stores for RMA. Those were the 5 brands I was looking at.

From your Lenovo Legion Y520 signature link, I've ended up looking at the Lenovo X1 Extreme, which is the competitor of the XPS 15, but seems to have less problems (S3, sleep, idle consumption, heat, ...). Also, the same config as your Legion (8300H + 1050 Ti) is a good compromise between all the options I was looking at with good battery life it would seem. Also, the Lenovo X1E only weights 1.7KG .

I'll keep looking, thanks for the comment.

Just need to spend some time adjusting their height a bit more, and getting them as close as possible to one another. Also have to sort all of the cable management underneath to be nicely hidden and out the way (most likely with double sided tape at the back of the desk).

    Hi everyone,

I've recently been browsing a swiss price comparator (Luke talked about it in his Logitech video) and saw the Galaxy S7 (G930F) is available for 479 CHF (473 USD). I was planning to buy a OnePlus 3T because it's supposedly a sweet spot between features and price and the only real thing missing is a camera as good as Galaxy S7 / iPhone 7 / Google Pixel. The OnePlus 3T is available in Europe for 439 Euros (460ish USD) but not available for Switzerland, so prices are higher through 3rd party retailers.

In that situation, do you think we can say buying the Galaxy S7 at that price is a no brainer ? Do you see the same situation in your country ? Google Pixel and iPhone 7 are way more expensive and the other cheaper phones don't have the same great camera.

I think that even with the S8 out in a few months, the S7 will remain an excellent phone with an excellent camera and the more the price will go down, the more unbeatable it will become. I don't think that futur phones will be able to justify 700 USD or more price tags with excellent phones like we have now costing nothing. We have more than excellent cameras, excellent screens, good battery life, fingerprint scanners, good storage speed, etc... What do you think ?
