Royal Air Force? I work with them, but I'm in the USAF. They bought two RC135V/W from my squadron here.
In the airforce I just built a mITX computer that has an i7 4970k and a amd 7970ghz gpu. I mainly did that for your reason, portability, but I'm stationed here for 5 years, if I don't do 20 here. I just bought a laptop Dell 1547 that i use for notes and I played FarCry4 on it while deployed.

I have one but I am getting a apprenticeship in the RAF and I cannot exactly hall a desktop around. Plus I'm traveling around more and as much as I like my 5820K, GTX 960 PC I don't like carrying a Desktop around.

the 840m is a bit pants, a 960m would be a much better idea, (if not higher)
Laptops unfortunately cost a lot to get decent long lasting performance

Captain Kalabraxo reacted to manikyath in Will a Graphics Card Improve the compute performance of my Server/Workstation
my dad's job only gets me pentium 4's with clogged heatsinks -.- (not jelly at all, i swear)
/s
if you already have that hardware, it may be a good start, as buying something new in that range... is gonna cost a few...
i'm actually thinking if a 750Ti would be a good pick for a GPU, its a semi decent card, at one hell of a bargain.
i -personally- prefer nvidia over AMD for power users, because they seem to have a tad more advanced features.
i'm also doubting if your workload would warrant the cost of a higher end gpu. (i'm leaving the professional cards out of question for now, but that may be an option too)

this is a tough decision, because a graphics card will prove to be useful for more advanced editing, but the question is "is it worth to buy a GPU over getting better CPU/RAM?"
maybe go for a lower end GPU, and push most of the cost of your system towards a very solid CPU, and plenty of RAM and storage.
EDIT: also look into virtualization, because it might be worth it virtualizing your workloads here.

PCI-E Wifi sure beats USB so I am preety sure it does? 80% sure.

Captain Kalabraxo reacted to JebKerman in Which card should i use?
in AUD, The dollar's in the shit, it's 78 US cents atm so it's ~$390 US then take off some more for the general discount the US seems to have.
All 970s here cost between $440 and $530 and 980s are between $720 and $930

Sorry, I did not see the "2x" in front of the RAM, It would handle pretty much anything you can throw at it with 32gb of RAM.

Yeah I think I'll go Linux Ubuntu, don't know what went though my mind when I thought using windows 7 as a OS was a good idea.
