GlovePIE is another great program that lets you use more than just extra keyboards including wiimotes and mice. I even lets you have more than one mouse cursor.

Did you put any strain on the cables while managing them? If you did, you could have damaged one of them. If you have a multi-meter, test them or if you have any spares, you could try using them.

Does the type of IDE to SATA adapter have two SATA ports? Because if it does, one is for SATA to IDE and the other is for IDE to SATA.
