  1. He's saying to NOT use gpu-z to detect the pci-e lanes, but instead checking the pci-e setup in the BIOS.

This... is a good idea! the number of pci-e slots is not what the concern was, the processor and the chipset are limited to only 16 useable pci-e lanes of communication. so the 16x slot will only work at 16x if there are no other pci-e cards/peripherals/M.2 drives/ect in the system, otherwise it will operate at 8x.
  3. My apologies, I completely missed(not sure how) that you had tried it on multiple Motherboards already. One other thing that pops into my head, you're not running any other peripherals on the PC that would use any PCI-E lanes? Because even Z97 is limited to only 16 PCI-E lanes and any device that takes even one of those lanes will force the Graphics card to drop to 8x.
  4. Exactly! One bad card does not prove that every G1 sucks. I would argue that ANY GTX970 from ANY major manufacturer has the potential to be the BEST GTX970 it is the silicon lottery after all... anyone anywhere could potentially end up with the best GTX970 simply due to luck.
  5. I had 2 GTX 970 G1's, both overclocked to more than 1500 mhz with only a few mv of core voltage. Both were quiet and stayed cool(less than 70c for the bottom card and less than 80c for the top card). Don't judge an entire lineup of cards sold by the thousands because of a small batch of bad experiences, some of which may not even be the card's fault. Have you tried putting the card in another motherboard? or using a different pci-e 16x slot?

If you're an audio engineer and can KINDLY give some advice and recommendations instead of just ripping him a new hole for his choice of headphone and attacking his product choices. Such hubris, try some humility on for size.
  7. Well, i'm going to side with Linus here. The Asus x99 ws(workstation) boards may be a real sweet spot for x99 performance and durability.
  8. Higher amounts of vram are always preferable but not always an issue. Some games will take advantage of more vram while others will not. The 380 should be powerful enough to take advantage of 3-4gb of vram.
  9. Actually.. I would leave the 3 drive cage in that spot and just remove the 5 drive cage since your fan is mounted behind the 5 drive cage at the moment. Also, fyi there are 2 2.5inch drive mounts behind the motherboard if you want to move the ssd back there for more 3.5inch drive space. The best place to add a fan for more graphics card air flow would be on the bottom of the case in front of the psu. I replaced the stock evga fan with fractal dynamic GP-12 ---here--- my personal favorite fans. Mine is overclocked at the moment with a custom bios to allow for higher voltages and power limit. Currently running over 1500mhz and under 70 deg C at full load.
  10. Actually, it's a fractal design r5. There is at least 1 140mm fan in the front that comes factory and space for 2 140mm fans The fans mount from the front and are behind the front case door. If you look closely you can see it peaking out behind the middle drive cage.
  11. The 750Ti is a very power efficient card and seeing as it's not considered to be a high end card and has very low cooling requirements... a radiator and block would be technically possible but... kinda silly.
  12. When it comes to increasing voltage, the primary concern you'll have is temperatures, so you can safely increase clocks and voltages so long as your temperatures stay reasonable. EVGA has a quality cooler so you should have some headroom to work with. To find your asic value with gpu-z, after you open the program, right click on the top bar of the gpu-z program window, inside the drop down menu you'll see "Read ASIC quality" towards the bottom of the list.

The asic quality can be gotten with GPU-Z, the basic meaning behind asic quality is that the higher the asic generally the higher overclock can be had with lower extra voltage, while a lower asic will tend to need more voltage to achieve the same clocks However, in some cases a lower asic chips(also sometimes called "leaky chips") will respond better to higher voltages than a lower asic value and can thus be overclocked more so long as a cooler is used that can handle WAY more than stock heat generation. I would recommend maxing out the power limit(which you did) and then turning up the voltage(I'm running 1.274v currently HOWEVER i'm using a modded bios and liquid cooling to keep temperatures down) and trying to use extra voltage to achieve higher clockspeeds. Watch your temperatures though, you'll want to keep them reasonable when under full GPU load(IMO under 80 degrees C)
  14. have you bumped the core voltage at all? higher frequencies do require higher voltages to maintain stability. and remember, any card is only guaranteed to get the clocks it comes with from the factory, anything over that is more icing on the cake.
  15. Graphics score of 19700 is about right I would say. I'm currently hitting about 21900 with a bit more GPU horsepower on my main system. With that number being pretty good it sounds like your CPU might be scoring a bit low.

That score seems a bit low My second PC: i5-2500k @4.5ghz and a GTX980 overclocked to 1400Mhz currently scores 12,176 Remember, your firestrike score is a combination of CPU and GPU scores so it is not solely GPU benchmark Also witcher 3 is also a pretty heavily CPU intensive title, in some games an i7 can free up more GPU legroom.
  17. the Z170 board uses the Z170 chipset, which is the best/highest featured/most options/highest performance chipset for the current 6th gen Intel CPU's. sooo... Z170 is the best choice if possible.
  18. It's a speaker, and it uses speaker wire. Its a simple pair of wires that runs from the speaker to the home theatre setup. To use the speakers with speaker wire you would also need a device that outputs through speaker wire.(figured I'd say it, seems kinda obvious I know)
  19. YES!!! the EVGA hybrid model has some of the best temperature and noise characteristics of any of the card options. I'm running an EVGA hybrid and I really like it! I swapped out the stock fan for my own, as the rad fan was not up to par for my tastes.

  21. The case setup looks good (Personally) I would remove the middle drive cage for better air flow. I agree with Interfectorem, check the fan speed with Afterburner, possibly try maxing out the fan speed and leaving the side door off on the case to eliminate any possible interior heat issues Finally, if that doesn't work, contact MSI, see if they'll let your reapply the thermal paste(I recommend notua NT-H1) if they won't, see about getting the card RMA'ed, because at stock speeds that cooler should keep the card below 70c(imo)
  22. However... if you can afford 2 GTX970's.... I would Highly recommend getting 1 GTX 980ti as an alternative. You'll not have to worry about SLI compability with games, you'll have 6gb of VRam to be better suited for higher resolution future AAA games plus you'll have an upgrade path in the future instead of being maxed out with 2 cards already. The performance is nearly identical as well while the 980ti will give you much smoother frame timing(less microstutter) due to not using SLI

HOWEVER... if you want to do a custom loop water cooling setup then you really should consider a 970 with a reference pcb the EVGA GTX970 --- Here --- is an example of it If you would like to find some other options, the EKWB compatability list is --- Here --- The primary reason for this recommendation is compatability, if you buy a non-reference card it may be very difficult or impossible to find a full cover water block for the card.
