  1. I'll check out Ubuntu or Debian but since I'm somewhat used to and comfortable with Mint I'll probably use that but I'll make sure to check out other Distros. Thank you for the advice, the Linux community has been super helpful with my transition from Windows 10.
  2. Sorry for not replying, I ended up installing Linux Mint 19.1 and got the wifi working and all is good and it's heaps better than Windows 10. Thanks for even remotely trying to help my stupid ass. Have a good day.
  3. So I decided to install Linux Mint Cinnamon on my laptop coming from Windows 10 because I was bored with it and wanted something fresh and I am absolutely loving it and I don't know why I didn't do it earlier. Now that I've come over and really liked it I'm heavily considering converting my gaming machine to Linux as well but from what I've seen on gaming-oriented Distros is that they're exclusively for gaming, no extra functionality for word processing, web browsing and so forth. I know I more games on Steam run well on Linux then ever before and I can use Wine and/or PlayonLinux but I don't want to choose a Distro that hinders gaming performance. If it helps at all my gaming rig has a Ryzen 5 2600 (stock clocks), 16GB of 3000MHz G.Skill RAM and a 1050Ti (which I intend to upgrade soon). I am a relative newbie with Linux but I'm more than happy to do some work in the terminal. Any help would be greatly appreciated, have a good Sunday afternoon.
  4. Okay, thanks. I had pretty much accepted that it was dead so I'm not surprised. I did have a look around in the BIOS for a hot-swapping option but couldn't find anything but I'll have another look. Cheers.
  5. So, my external HDD started beeping and wasn't recognized by the computer and from what I could tell it was Grade A stuffed to high heaven. I then decided to take it apart and disconnect the USB bridge to see if that was the issue and I could recover my data. Unfortunately the beeping persisted and my motherboard refused to POST. How and why could a buggered mobile HDD cause this and is there any hope whatsoever of me recovering my data?
  6. Fuck, fair enough. This is just a laptop I use for browsing and YouTube so I guess it isn't worth the hassle.
  7. Hello all, I decided to make the switch to Linux on my laptop yesterday as I was getting bored of Windows 10 and decided to change things up a bit. The install went fine but I am not getting any wifi, not as in no signal but Ubuntu isn't detecting the wireless adapter. I've tried everything a Linux illiterate person like me could possibly try but it either doesn't work or there's an error and I don't know how to deal with it. The wireless adapter as given by the "lspci" command in the terminal is: 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8821CE 802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter Any help whatsoever would be amazing as I've put too many hours of troubleshooting into this to give up now and I'd prefer not to fall back to Windows 10.
  8. I’ve booted it straight from the CD, in the barrage of text before it booted it said it had failed something but because I’m illiterate in this area I have no idea what it was referring to and it wasn’t up for long for me to grab a photo. The original menu popped up but was duplicated 3 times and in a really small resolution. After all that it seems to have booted fine, I’ll have a look around and try and install it and see what happens.
  9. So I decided to try Linux and decided on Linux Lite as the review said it was perfect for a beginner and someone used to Windows. I downloaded the ISO burnt it onto a disc using CDBurnerXP. I made sure to verify it before finishing the burn. I’m trying to install it onto my HP laptop. I don’t know the name of the laptop line but it has a 15W Ryzen 5 2500U. Whenever I select one of the options when it boots onto the disc the screen does this regardless of what option I selected. I’m not particularly educated in this area of tech so any help would be greatly appreciated.
  10. Hey Guys, I have a handful of old-school consoles and I got an old, small NEC CRT off a mate but I have had signal issues. It has RCA ports but only the yellow video and white audio port. I’ve tried numerous times, with my fat PS2, to get signal but absolutely nothing happens, the TV acts as if nothing was connected at all. The TV turns on fine and everything else seems to work. I’ve got another Audiosonic CRT and the PS2 works fine with that, albeit with some buzzing. I would like to get this thing working as it is something of a novelty. Any help would be appreciated. Have a nice day.
  11. So I figured out the problem and I feel like a proper dickhead. When I installed the 1050 Ti and the Nvidia drivers I was so excited that I had forgotten to uninstall the AMD drivers. Literally step 1 of the process I forgot. Thanks for the help, it really strengthens my belief in the Tech Tips forums.
  12. So I deleted the files in the steam folder for Gmod after uninstalling and reinstalled it. Nothing has changed. Gmod wouldn't have a problem with 4GB GPUs would it? I can't think of anything else.
  13. Ok, cheers, I'll try that when I can. Hopefully it works because I really want to play it.
  14. Files in the documents? Are there files I have to delete after uninstalling it with Steam?
  15. I've already done that but would it help if I do it again? Honest question.
  16. I'm going to be out for a few hours so I can reply but I won't be able to do anything at the computer. Any help would still be appreciated though.
  17. And Gmod only closes after I spam the close button or end task in task manager
  18. I unsubscribed from all my mods, I validated the files and set in the launch options windowed mode -sw. Same thing happens.
  19. So I recently reinstalled Garry's Mod after not playing it for at least a year and I knew I could and can run it with absolutely no problems whatsoever. I installed it aaaaand nothing. I did some research and tried -dxlevel 81. Nothing. I also tried -dxlevel 90 and 95. I tried launching it in windowed mode, I heard a sound effect but stopped responding when I clicked the screen which was still black. I tried a couple other launch options for force loading and something else and nothing worked. I validated the local files and I reinstalled it. Nothing works and I REALLY want to play it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  20. I expect them to. They seem quite a bit more 'devoted' to driver improvements on older cards. You can still play games on older cards like the HD 6870 and that's a 2TFLOP card.
  21. An RX 480 would be good. Drivers have really improved it, it's now something like 1% slower accross the board and it should age well with the whole AMD 'Finewine' thing. I'm also a bit of an AMD fanboy.
  22. Wow, I'm surprised. You'd think that modern GPUs (especially a high powered one like the 980Ti) would take more advantage of PCI-E 3.0.
  23. Wow, there isn't much of a difference at all. That's pretty surprising when you look at the theoretical performance increases between 2.0 and 3.0.
  24. Awesime, thanks. I live in Australia so PC parts a stupid high. Hopefully the Australian dollar will rise soon. The Thermaltake SMART 550W 80+ Bronze PSU is $85 so I'll look into that. I do plan on building a new PC, maybe with a 6C/12T Ryzen CPU, depending on price and Ryzen's actual performance but I'll have to make do with what I've got for now. I do have to admit that I am a bit of an AMD fanboy so I would love to get a 470 or 480. The 470 looks good as it isn't far behind the 480 and can be upwards of $50-$60 less on average.
