DrMacintosh reacted to paeschli in Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Apple for MacBook Pro Flexgate Issue
    As reported by iFixit:
A similar issue has appeared on my gf 2016 15 inch MacBook Pro (A1707 model) with the screen glitching out (as if it was a GPU issue) once you open the lid more than 5 cm.

We were quoted a 650€ repair by an Apple Premium reseller (Apple Stores are still closed due to COVID-19).

Any advice on how to proceed? Get it fixed by Apple and hope for a refund in the future, send it to an independent repair shop in the hope it ends up cheaper, or wait until Apple acknowledges the issue?

    What an ungrateful little......

Depending on the model the computer is going to thermal throttle anyway so overclocking won't do anything except for short burst workloads.

DrMacintosh got a reaction from Tech_Dreamer in Hulu 'Intentionally' Slows Down PC Streaming
Yeah, not really news but I've seen this first hand. Watching LEGO Masters with my gf on her Bros PS4 and the stream was full 1080p. My smartTV streams full 1080p, my tablet and phone stream 1080p. The only thing that does not is my MacBook Pro and my Desktop.

What irks me more about Hulu is that it's a paid service and you still get ads....thankfully I get my Hulu account as a bundle with my phone plan.....

If one could get the proper drivers to install correctly on a PC, it could theoretically work.

But if anyone can afford the ProDisplay XDR, they can afford a Mac.

Yep. Like I said, burger money. Go to your fav fast food place and buy the highest ticket item on the menu. The amount of lawyer fees and other expenses are insane though!

Got my 30 bucks from AMD's settlement after they sold a four core cpu advertising it as an eight core one. I got a lot of food that day...

DrMacintosh reacted to Commodus in "iOS Secuirty is fucked" -Zerodium Stops Accepting iOS Exploits Because of too Many Submissions
Have to shake my head at the people blindly lashing out at Apple even as outside experts say that Zerodium's claims are full of hype and not as dire as they're made out to be.

I'm not so naive as to think iOS is completely airtight, but remember that some security researchers thrive on exaggerating threats to draw publicity.  It's easy to get attention if you say iOS security is ruined and don't have to explain the flaws (not that they should, since they should still honour disclosure policies); don't be surprised if it turns out that the flaws disclosed post-patch aren't nearly as exciting as they sounded before.

I'm not under the illusion iOS is rock-solid security wise, but it is odd to hear people lashing into it as they cheer on Android, a platform known for poor security update policies, poor oversight of app submissions and more real-world malware attacks.  I still find it wild that Google lets OEMs release security updates as far apart as 90 days from each other.  Imagine if Dell or HP was allowed to skip some vital Windows patch because they didn't 'feel' like delivering it... there'd be riots!

Also, I wonder how many of reported exploits are actually valid...

DrMacintosh got a reaction from Vishera in AMD not supporting Zen3 on older motherboards :(
Even if they are dropping support for a non-technical reason, it's kinda hard to blame AMD for this. If Intel isn't being competitive and you can boost motherboard sales, that's great for AMD and board OEMs. They are a corporation after all.

DrMacintosh got a reaction from For Science! in AMD not supporting Zen3 on older motherboards :(
What was AMDs promise anyway? AM4 was introduced in September 2016? It's May 2020 and only now are we seeing processors not being supported. Didn't they say they would support AM4 for 4 years? Technically they are still doing that. Just some boards can't.

You can say they shouldn't have made a promise, but that promise wasn't a contract, and even if it was supporting a single platform for near 4 years is damn impressive.

Hating on AMD for this isn't rational imo.

DrMacintosh got a reaction from Arika in AMD not supporting Zen3 on older motherboards :(
How though? You're whole position is based on the fact that AMD did not come out at the start pre 2016 stating exactly which chips will and will not be supported well into 2020.....that's simply an insane position to take.

Now that AMD knows what chips they have now, they are telling us what will and will not work. Nobody has been "douped". Nobody bought a new CPU thinking their old motherboard will work, and the reverse of that is true. There is really nothing to be mad about other than AMD not being able to see 4 years into the future of their product line.

DrMacintosh reacted to LinusTech in About the Vincero sponsor spot in Techlinked...
We see this feedback once in a while and from what we can tell the complaints about Vincero are pretty much entirely focused on the bang for the buck of the watches.

From my point of view when you buy anything there are a lot of ways to get 'value' from the merchant. You're paying for the bill of materials, the labor, R&D, logistics, service, style, convenience, brand, etc etc etc. Everyone determines the value of a product differently.

If we're going full "real talk", from my point of view any watch is a personal statement - nothing more. If someone's personal statement is "I appreciate the work Vincero does curating nice looking watches that are good enough for me and I like to associate my personal identity with the brand they've built" then is that REALLY any different from someone else's personal statement that goes "I only care about what's under the hood. This thing may be unfashionable but it's built like a tank in ways most people will never know or see"?

If the complaints about Vincero centered on their customer service or that the watches keep terrible time or something, we would drop them like a hot potato.

    They don't.

The complaints are from non-Vincero customers who can't fathom why anyone else would like them or buy them.

That position isn't wrong, but buying a Vincero watch is equally not wrong.

At the end of the day we are all paying too many dollars for too much materialistic crap. Want to make a statement that means something? Don't buy a Vincero or a Seiko or a Casio. Go find something second hand and save it from a landfill.

Edit: to be clear, I'm not taking some kind of moral high ground. I throw out my water bottle when recycling it isn't reasonably convenient, I have plenty of junk in my house made of non-renewable resources, and I travel by air. I'm killing the planet like most people.

The point I'm making is that to me this whole 'which watch' argument is like watching fan boys argue about BTS or AMD vs Intel or whatever.

I would not be surprised if the reason for this is intel is not able to meet the volumes that apple would need. Even Dell are still defaulting to the 8th gen chips on their XPS when you look at their website.

    Me!

after dealing with shitty $30 android phones for years I decided to get an iPhone 11 this year and will probably adopt the flagship iPhone 12 when my lease ends.

after seeing what I considered usable on my old phone, I won’t go back to android for a while, it seems android phones get slower faster too.

after android abandoned removable battery’s I have no reason to stay with android.

Sadly my OLED TV lacks Displayport. It supports G-Sync through HDMI through some sort of trickery that I do not understand, but in order to run it at 4k 120hz, I need HDMI 2.1. My 2080 Ti is fast enough, the games I play are all older titles and "e-sports" titles like Overwatch, but HDMI 2.0 can't drive 120hz.

But there’s better CPUs from amd that you won’t have to change platform on when you upgrade.

intels current socket won’t be around later this year to next year. so you will have to buy a new mobo when you upgrade

amds Current socket will be supported until at least 2022, there is no reason to waste your money.

This cpu is similarly priced performed higher and unlocked for overclocking

This motherboard is cheap and will do everything you want it to
