I think I'm going to be transitioning to Local Backups for my iPhone and iPad.
My photos are the only real thing that needs to be backed up, and those are stored in my personal iCloud Photo Library. My passwords are also stored in my iCloud Keychain.
So really, I gain about 11GB of free space on my iCloud Storage plan and I lose only a slight convenience factor.
Unrelated: But I just bought a 3D Print of the IJN Akagi for War at Sea.

I actually like some of Google Photos machine learning algorithms like automatically tagging a child until he/she grows up, though there are instances it will ask me to confirm. It even offers animated GIFs for burst shots.
Google Photos is not without its flaws, like some privacy concerns but I don't have any photos in my gallery that can be considered as something that can be used against me.

The difference is that Apple does those things on device.
