    (It’s the Sapphire RX 470 Platinum. Other than it’s looks, it’s just a 470)

Fuck, I think I did. I rarely ever have a use case where an eGPU would be nice.....but I can get such a good deal on this Razer CoreX that I feel obligated to buy it! ~$200 for a Razer CoreX and either a 480/470 is pretty good.

I "have a GPU" in that my main rig could just have its card pulled. However it's not exactly easy for me to do that due to my case being so....."custom."

What would you think of getting a 470 is the price were, say, $90 shipped? These people locally are not responding to their listings, so I might just have to go to eBay.

  3. So the $1800 13” MacBook Pro was a fucking lie.

Its only 5-8% more powerful than the base model....and they perform very similar thermally as well.

If you’re going to buy a 13” MacBook Pro, the base model with 256GB of Storage is the only buy.

    1. Tech_Dreamer

i'd be pissed if something like this with price difference performed utter equal. but since it's at-least performs tad better they can charge higher imo. we've seen it with GPU's before. you can pay more? go for that tad' more.your choice.

  4. Bruh, I’m messaging these sellers and nobody is responding. I want a blower 480!

@BrokenProgram01 $270 to $330. A bit faster than a 1660 Ti, but very good ones (like my AORUS 1660 Ti with binned core and Samsung memory) can almost match it.

  5. My router has a stroke almost daily now. Speeds go from 120mbps down to 30 or as low as 5mbps....I have to restart the damn thing just to get the speeds back where they should be.

Thankfully there is a wireless management portal where I can send the restart command without having to actually get up and pull the plug.

I'm pretty sure the original HDD is still in there making images of the one IMAC in the house when it is turned on.  Thing is a tank...

  6. So, incase you were wondering how much it will end up costing Apple to fully service my MacBook Pro:

    - keyboard replacement: $428.00

    - bottom shell: $180.14

    - screen replacement: $600 minimum

    Total: $1,208.14

Price I paid for the machine at BestBuy: $1250 (before tax)

Throw in the labor cost of the screen and some more overhead....Apple will officially have made $0 and will probably have lost money on me buying their MacBook Pro.

Serves them right tbh. A thin sheet of aluminum does not cost $180.

Apple released service programs for my model of MacBook Pro. Those programs are:

      -Keyboard Replacement

-Display replacement due to backlight failure (flexgate)

-battery replacement for potential expansion issues

Them replacing the bottom shell is the result of a fuckup on their part. The rest are the result of bad design. Those parts need to be swapped out as whole units so the only thing left that’s actually original is the logic board.

@ARikozuM no I meant "is the juice worth the squeeze".

Yeah, I can attempt to resell it for profit, but I probably won't actually make anything since I will have a huge amount of competitors doing the same thing.

    3. ARikozuM

      ARikozuM

If you're asking me if I think it's worth reselling, then no.

You could make a nicer, and functional, wooden, acrylic, or even stamped alum case for less. I'd say about $50-70 dollars of material and maybe two to seven hours each.

    4. DrMacintosh

      DrMacintosh

@ARikozuM The PSU is like $50 too, the board with the Thunderbolt controller can’t be that much more expensive. I bet they make more than $100 from selling one of these enclosures.

  10. Looks like I'm going to go to the Apple Store tomorrow to get them to swap out the bottom shell. Should be a quick repair. I could do it in 5min. Wonder how long it will take one of their Geniuses.

Maybe apple should use Lamborghini tools.

IOT every tool and log exactly how much torque the employee used for each screw during repair.

  11. Ok, yeah. I've pretty much decided that I'm not going to get the new quad core 13" MacBook Pro.

    Rational:

    • I have a home PC with a 2600, RX 580, and 16GB of 2666
    • I live extremely close to my college (like 45min walking, 20min on the bus depending on timing), so the intermediary period where I could benefit from a 75% CPU performance bump in my MacBook is very short
    • My College has computer labs with desktop core i7s which can beat the new 13" MBPs CPU anyway
    • The new MBP has Iris 645 Graphics which are only 13% more powerful than my current MacBook Pros Iris 540 Graphics
    • While getting the TouchBar would be sick, the TouchBar comes with the T2 chip and with that comes non-removable, non-serviceable, and non-upgradable storage

So of I'll be doing any upgrading, I'll most likely be picking up an eGPU and an RX 480. Having graphics performance is more important to me than CPU performance 90% of the time imo. Preferably a reference blower card, because I've always wanted one of those.

  13. I'm debating if upgrading to the new Quad Core base model 13" MBP would even be worth it. The GPU is only a modest 13% increase in performance. While the CPU is closer to like a 75%-83% increase in performance....it's not like I don't have an R5 2600, 16GB of 2666, and an RX 580 at home.

I honestly don't do a lot of editing or CPU based rendering on the go either. I think I'm just caught up in the desire to have a quad core CPU and getting a Touchbar.

@blade I'm trying to make an example of why saying a larger number is misleading when you only get to use a certain amount of it.

    3. Blademaster91

      Blademaster91

@ARikozuM it is misleading as 7% of the SSD can't be used, companies like Samsung and Crucial recommend reserving another 10% for endurance, really lame when a 256GB SSD ends up as 208GB after overprovisioning and reserved space.

I wouldn't mind if companies sold it as a 931GB SSD instead, or add extra storage chips only for overprovisioning.

    4. ARikozuM

      ARikozuM

They sell a 1TB drive that is only 1000 Gigabytes (not 1024 gibibytes). That's why Windows reports 931 Gibibytes. It's a bit misleading as our systems don't function on powers of 10.

Use of proprietary connectors must be made accessible to third parties. Apple can defend their OS from tampering, but they can't decline to install on a third-party drive. They should not refuse to service a machine over a 3P drive.

    3. floofer

      floofer

@DrMacintosh You can remove the OS security feature (so installing unsigned OS) and remove to disallow booting from an external drive, which I think the latter will be removed anyway in future, as Apple have had a few problems with it recently. IMO the T2 chip is actually a big leap in security, and as long as you aren't being pretty silly with the laptop its not too much of a hassle.

With the data loss feature, it is after quite a large number of failed password attempts, and if you are trying to recover from a dead motherboard, its bad luck. You should be backing up to iCloud or a Time Machine anyway, and you are offered free space on iCloud - not to mention its prompted quite a bit. We'll see how it goes, but I think with the T3, there would be options to mitigate the data loss, and hopefully they've learnt.

    3. DrMacintosh

      DrMacintosh

I was about to leave to go get some chili dogs with my friend so I went to shut down the system (the internet had just gone out). Upon doing so the computer hanged on the shutdown screen after trying to shut down apps that where stuck trying to get a network connection.

I waited way longer than it should have taken and the system still didn't shut down, so I just held the power button until it turned off.  When I came back home after eating I ran sfc /scannow just to make sure everything was ok and that's when I found the issue. It's entirely possible that the corruption had happened before this though. This was just what made me check.

I've also just gotten into the habit of running sfc /scannow because of how often I've ran into system integrity corruption.

    4. TheGlenlivet

      TheGlenlivet

      Ah  -Just Windows Things-

  23. So after making a repair disk, Windows was still unable to diagnose or even attempt to repair the operating system. There are reasons why I will never buy a Windows based laptop. This shit cannot happen on a mobile machine.

When I'm at home, I have the resources to fix these kinds of issues, but not when I'm on the go. I have never had these kinds of issues with macOS.

sfc /SCANNOW finds errors but is unable to fix them, booting into safemode does not change anything, booting from a repair disk does not change anything, and trying to troubleshoot the issue just makes Windows recovery give up.

The best part is....I can still boot and the system appears to run fine! HOW IS THE SYSTEM SO DAMAGED THAT IT CAN'T BE REPAIRED.....BUT I CAN STILL USE IT?!

If my games weren't only on Windows I would have kicked this piece of shit OS to the curb a long time ago. I'm fucking sick of it. Every single install of Windows 10 I've ever had has become corrupted or damaged in some way. Why is it so difficult to make an operating system that doesn't break itself? It's BS.

Unfortunately, the system image backup is not only no longer maintained, but it also lacks the ability to exclude drives from the backup. Meaning I cannot make a backup because I don't have the space to back up my storage HDD when all I wan't to backup is my C drive.
