  1. Idk about the latest stuff but I still have a Canon AE-1 and a A-1 that both work perfectly and they are like.... 50 years old?
  2. That sounds misinformed and weird I mean QMK is very nice to have but if you can type all the letters and numbers and brackets you are good. Especially for python, it's famously not weird character soup
  3. Having not owned an android tablet for five years it had been a weird experience honestly.

Some of it is down to the tablet I got, some is that tablet apps are not always the same as the phone versions. Some seems to be android for tablets being weird.

The tablet I got is a Samsung Tab A 10.1(2019). It has been flashed with the latest LineageOS version because OneUI is awful.

    The good:

    Battery life is super good

The 10" screen is quite nice for video content

Lies perfectly flat on a table

Headphone jack(though this might be the only device where I don't really care for that)

Weight hits that perfect *nice* feeling. Not too light, not too heavy. Just very nice.

I got it for €50 + shipping in perfect condition just no charger and no original box

    The bad:

Speakers are surprisingly shit. Very tinny and having only end fireing speakers is REALLY weird on this big of a device. It kind of works with phones because they are small but with a big tablet you only get audio blasted into one ear 💀

I got unlucky on the used market gamble and ended up with a 2GB RAM tablet instead of 3GB and it is quite noticeable even after a custom ROM removing the bloat.

Screen has to be at quite a high brightness setting to be nice to use

    The weird:

YouTube pops out of full screen at every add and does not go back after the add is over or skipped.

When pressing the Tabs button in Firefox you also have to drag it up from the bottom to see the tabs and close them

Also Firefox, it is for some reason surprisingly difficult to close tabs. If you get a popup add it is VERY annoying.

For inexplicable reasons the volume steps when using Bluetooth are very far apart. This is not a thing on any other device I have ever used. As BT audio is one of the things I will be using a lot this really bothers me.

So that is my tablet experience so far, have not yet gotten to try it out for navigation which is what I got it for but it seems like it will be very nice for that

Not all tablets are equal. Just to let you know, so you don't think ALL tablets have horrible tinny speakers etc.

I just got a Xiaomi pad 6, The differences between this and all other tablets I have used or owned is outstanding. The speakers for example are very good, I believe it has 6 speakers, dolby atmos. Battery life is brilliant, plus 33W charging so not abysmal charge times when needed.... battery drain seems almost non-existent, can easily leave it for days if not needed and it's barely used any battery. Snapdragon 870 is pretty nippy, and 6GB RAM is enough, but extends to 14GB? IIRC.

Using plex and watching dolby vision and atmos capable movies has been really really good.

The only things that have annoyed me so far, is split screen usage sometimes doesn't work and is app dependent... not xiaomi's fault if the apps don't support it I guess, anyway some of this might actually be the fault of the launcher, will need to test to verify. Have been using NOVA launcher same as on my phones.

Also a fan of Nova launcher, I've been using on my phones for at least 7 years if not longer. Did not really feel good on my tablet though. Might have been something with it clashing with Lineage, I remember disliking how they worked together many years back on my phone. Never really loved Lineage, I just got it because it was the ROM with the latest security patch I could find really.

I am sure the Xiaoi pad 6 would have been way out of my budget but I almost got a Tab 6 Lite but someone else got too it before me and this came up for way under market price so I just jumped on it

Yeah, Have been a NOVA fan for a fair while too, I love that I just had to buy the premium once for like £5 and have used it on so many devices for many years now. Currently have it on my newest phone (Poco F5), my old phone that I still use for some stuff (poco x3 pro), and my new tablet (Xiaomi pad 6). TBH the pad is the only one I have had give me problems... I did find another glitch BTW, when trying to switch between recently used apps it wouldn't do it a lot of the time and just force closed the app instead... so for now have switched back to the default launcher on the pad. So guessing that was also the problem with split screen which is also used from the recents part.

I also wouldn't have bought anything as much as the pad 6, but I recently had my mum pass away, and that was a gift to her from me and the rest of my brothers and sisters just a month or so ago. And the rest of them already had ipads (hate apple stuff personally), so was asked if I wanted it. I'd typically only just bought a new ereader, Kobo Clara 2E.... but I do admit that reading on that is more enjoyable than a pad.

  4. Wow, the internet is entirely un usable without some sort of add blocking huh... I have been using Firefox in strict mode for a few years but i just got my tablet and was testing it out, went on the net to a site i frequent and i could not get to the content because i was on stock chrome on a website i thought had minimal to no adds.......

yeah trying to use my old computer to browse the internet just DOESNT WORK with new, ad-filled websites. If there's anything more demanding than a couple banner ads, my old laptop that I refuse to get rid of, will freeze, reload the page, crash, reload the page, and keep doing that over and over again. Usually on news sites that are covered in auto-playing videos and stuff.

  5. I have come to the conclusion that this 8" tablet mount can definitely hold a 10" tablet securely. I did this by mounting a transformer to a 155x244 mm piece of MDF, inserting and shaking violently 😂

Ended up buying a 2019 Tab A 10.1 that came up for €50, seemed a bit too good of a deal to pass on. If I don't like it I can easily get my money back on it

  6. Hmmmm I wonder if I could cram a Tab S6 Lite into the Ram Mounts 7-8" tablet holder 🤔

Found one for €150 which seems like a good deal, but it is 155mm wide so I am not sure if it would grip well.

Earlier I said I wanted 155mm or smaller but after more concideration I am not sure how well the mount would deal with it.

Perhaps I should just cut or 3d print something 155mm wide and mount 500g of weight on it, shove it in the mount and shake 😂

the other option i am looking at is a Tab A 10.1, which is even wider but half the price.

i was also looking at the Tab A7 lite but reading on GSMarena it seems like a shelf-to-ewaste-bin product. The one nice thing about it is that it for sure fits the mount

  7. Anyone have any suggestions for what used tablets to look for? I only have one restriction which is a max width of 155mm because that's as wide as my motorbike mount can go 😄

Budget is ~€100, it's pretty much only going to be used as a GPS with some video streaming as a secondary task.

I have a Tab 3 7" piece of ewaste right now but it is basically unusable because of it's age

currently looking like an ipad mini 4 or samsung tab A 10.1 (2019)

I have more faith that the Ipad wont be a laggy mess but i really hate having to deal with lightning instead of USB C

Apple stopped selling the mini 4 five years ago so it is close to end of life. The Ipad mini 5 was up for sale till end 2021.

You could always print it. CNC machining in China is also cheaper than that.

its a mount for my motorbike, id really like to stick to something proven. cant have it shake to pieces on the highway....

id also really prefer a mini 5, but they are €250+ 😞

  8. See that costs *something* instead of nothing so that is reducing profit
  9. "Hey Siri, turn off the lights" *phone catches fire*
  10. Only thing I can think off is using some finishing compound for car paint. Might work, it's ment to remove what's left after cutting which is what you did with the paper towel kinda
  11. Neat, then it's mostly my phobia for needles that's getting in the way of me getting one That sounds awful, I can already hear most powersupplies coil whine along with tinnitus Got pretty close to doing the small magnet in my finger some years back but the primary source of the magnets was ebay and I wasn't old enough to drink so I'd have absolutely nothing decent for painkillers Might look into it again, in a not potato and scalpel in a shed way this time
  12. I bought a thermal printer camera off aliexpress and the amount of cat pictures i have taken since i got it is staggering...

i dont even know what to do with them all, i dont have nearly enough fridge magnets 🤣

  13. Unless the cryptographic keys on these devices can be updated i would probably not be interested. There is a good reason you get a new credit/debit card every few years.
  14. If i was setting up a new personal email for myself today i would go for Protonmail
