Id get fewer biger driver, so id start with a 8tb mirror.

Why not just put this all in one box with something like proxmox and vms

You can get the same expansion features for free if you want, its just that unraid puts it all in a nice gui.

    PSU is a good choice.

Not sure about if going with 2x4 Gig for a FreeNAS build would be necessary or worth it, but something to check into. If no then cool otherwise 2x4.

The SSD pictured is an M.2 SATA, while the 960 EVO is an M.2 PCIe/NVME.
But as said, check the laptop specs to see if it supports NVME drives

Daan101 reacted to MkaiL in Help identifying M.2 slot Key type
Looks like a regular m.2 slot, but that's just the form factor though. The problem however is that your ssd is a sata drive, and you want to upgrade to a nvme drive. You should check if your motherboard supports nvme drives, even though it fits, it might not work if it's not supported.

That is M key slot. You can identify it as pins from 59-67 are blocked. Pin numbers are labeled just under the slot.

The B key has pins 12-19 blocked.

    But as @MkaiL said

Actually, this kind of highlights how fucked up the justice system is.
Filming themselves having sex and then spreading it around was a terrible idea, and the people continuing to spread it are stupid. But come on... Are we really going to ruin the lives of 15 year olds just because they shared a video? Imagine being a registered sex offender and a pedophile as 15, because you shared a video of your classmates fucking.

I understand why the laws are the way they are, but I think it's messed up that a 40 year old can have sex with a 15 year old and it's totally fine in the eyes of the law, but two 15 years olds having a video of themselves fucking counts as possessing/producing child porn.
"Go ahead and have as much sex as you want. Just don't film or photograph it because if you do you'll become a registered sex offender!".
I can't think of any other law where doing the act itself is OK, but possessing images or video of it is considered one of the most serious crimes you can commit.

I hope the judge takes these things into consideration and gives a mild punishment, if any.
Doing what the law specifies would essentially result in 1000+ people having their entire lives ruined by falling behind education wise, getting a very poor social life, struggling to find jobs, and a long list of other issues.

Daan101 reacted to AlexTheGreatish in does UV light harm PC components?
It depends on what plastics are inside your case, since some plastics don't really care while others will get mangled.  Here is a good resource for what ones will be worst off.

That being said, I'd just go for it since there are such low forces associated with keeping a case together I doubt that it'd be an issue even if the plastics became a lot more brittle.

Daan101 got a reaction from LAwLz in does UV light harm PC components?
disclamer: I have never owned a PC with UV lights in it.

In theory, yes UV light will have a effect certain plastics, meaning that it will make them more brittle and rubber can become dried out effecting its sealing abilities.
In practice, you most likely won't notice the effect unless you are planning to use your PC for a insane amount of time (10+ years) or plan to use UV light in line of sight of sealing rubber rings (think inside a fitting). And even then its a stretch to imagine any kind of damage that isn't aesthetic.

Personal opinion: I think you will be just fine, but I don't like the way UV looks, even with UV reactive fluids.

I wouldn't buy a prebuilt NAS like synology unless you have no idea how to build a PC. I'd build a full server with Ubuntu and just run Samba. Plus if you decide to expand it later on, either in capacity or functionality, you can easily do that with Linux.

Daan101 got a reaction from Pachuca in Visual Studio 2017 how to navigate between projects
I don't have that much of experience in it either but what I've found to be the limit is to open multiple projects in separate windows and only run one of them at any given time. Meaning you can look at the code but can't see what it does for all but one project (for me this is always my current one).

Hope that helps (probably didn't tho)
I look forward to seeing a proper solution to this...

Threadripper specs are official now with TDP and confirmed pricing. I hope the RAM support is stellar on launch. ( Alienware is offering up to 64GB at 2933Mhz)

As someone looking to upgrade my workstation/gaming system I am extremely excited about what's been shown so far, and cannot wait for reviews comparing it against Skylake X.

I know plenty will be interested in the overclocking potential as well, and at least Noctua has so far confirmed all new coolers for Threadripper based on their best performing coolers.

The TDP of 180W is more than the early leaks, but still rather decent for essentially two 1700X's in the same socket.

Temps, especially under Prime95 and other AVX loads will be interesting.

Noctua's new cooler designs, and baseplate for Threadripper.

Also very interesting is the Alienware Threadripper machine! They sport up to 64GB at 2933Mhz.
That's actually darn impressive, considering how much Ryzen has struggled to get to that barrer and break it with Dual channel, 16GB max usually.

    As for Ryzen 3
Sorry folks, AMD hasn't settled on a price yet. Although the official launch day for retail stock is July 27th.

I'm reasonably sure that it won't be a problem, they should work at the slowest speed of the two sticks.
I'm not 100% sure so don't just rely on my opinion, only believe it if it lines up with the other opinions.

for normal use I would not advise RAID 1 as it will slow down performance.
If you want some kind of safety mechanism tho, I would advice using the second drive to backup the first periodically.

Daan101 got a reaction from BobbyC in Network switch or a 8-port router?
    1) I honestly think the only difference between the two is the amount of ports

    2) the 1Gbps would be split between the 4 to 6 devices, but seeing as a 4K youtube video will max use 50Mbps and netflix will use even less than that, I wouldn't be too worried about it except if you were to do local filetransfers to a NAS for example.

    3) you can have as many switches as you want wherever in a netwerk you want, you can compare it to a powerstrip, you can chain them but the less you do it the better

    Hope this helps
