  1. gibe nao plz !!! I have no graphics card in my system, and the AMD integrated graphics suck too much. I am trying to make a system that can stream games through the internet to my laptop without me actually having to play them. If that doesn't work, I'll just make it an HTPC/server and scrap the laptop altogether.
  2. PSUs for replacing the RAIDMAX (wow, I still can't believe I bought it...): Antec 450W :: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371045 $ EVGA 430W :: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438015 $$ Corsair 430WM :: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=17-139-049 $$$ The Antec had somewhat worse reviews than the EVGA, The EVGA is 80+ non-modular continuous supply with the best reviews. The Corsair has worst reviews of the three but is modular.
  3. Hmmm. I don't, but you are probably using Windows... From what I have heard/seen on the internet, the APU can push a youtube stream fine if you have the internet for it... I am also using Linux, not Windows, which I am 90% will improve performance. But I will keep that in mind. I think I can get my hands on an r7 250 for cheap, so I'll keep an eye out... And just so you know, they never intend to play any sort of game other than maybe chess. (My grandfather still has a deck of cards he's been using for years, and he has a whole library of reader's digest books to keep him company.) Oh and nice rig. Looks like somwthing I might have built for myself. Edit: You also were probably using Chrome, which is a resource hog and is much heavier in general that Firefox. I have seen the difference, and (funnily enough) so did my grandparents. They used to use Chrome, but it was way too slow, and lagged out way too much. Now they are using Firefox, and are having a better time, and less (though not entireley gone) lag. And I since I grew up on linux, I also grew up with Firefox, and I am much better at helping people with Firefox than Chrome (the new menu is so much cleaner and nicer now too, especially with the customize button)
  4. It has to look good. If it was me, the case would have been nearer to $40... but as it is, my grandfather has a ton of other electronics down there that look nearly identical to this case, so... It is what it is... -.- Thanks. I saw the Corsair one last night. I'll try and find a buyer for the RAIDMAX. I'd hate to tell them that I messed up in buying a part becuase they would freak out. I'll use the RAIDMAX for now WITH CAUTION, and maybe get them to chip in an extra $35-ish for some higher-quality parts (I don't think they would disapprove of that. ) They were able to sign in from a Slackware 13 with Lilo with no issues (on the old toshiba satelite), and found XFCE rather easy to use... They were stuck on windows 2000, and their "new" main machine still uses vista (Augggghh!) I think that KDE Plasma 5 won't be too horrible as all they want to do is stream youtube and maybe have a couple pictures/downloads. Provided I have firefox shortcut on the desktop and a file manager, I think they will be OK. And other than maybe Pantheon, I think that KDE 5 will be the best for them. They aren't exactly tehcnical idiots, either... But I will hang onto that advice. Edit: I have installed full Slackware 14.0 on another ooooold computer and it worked like a breeze. It relieved it from the weight of XP and gave it a couple more years of use. I think slackware 14.1 will be sturdy enough. And if not, I can go to ArchLinux, as I find that one to be rock solid as well. Edit 2: I have looked at a bunch of reviews and apparently KDE 5 is soooooo much more stable and nicer, so I will give it a shot. If not, I'll try the above mentioned pantheon and if not, Cinnamon/MATE. If it ends up being too heavy, XFCE might have to do... But, "that remains to be seen" (The Hobbit reference ).
  5. Really? Well, that was a bad idea... and I already got it... Oh well. I might be able to sell it off on ebay and get a better one later. I think it is low enugh wattage that it shouldn't affect anything as of now. I will keep an eye out for a good cheap one. Got any suggestions for a 30ish dollar PSU 350-400W?
  6. Hello everybody So, I am looking at building a MiniITX HTPC for my grandparents, because they are using an extremely old toshiba satelite laptop (which was scrapped for parts and I salvaged) for a secondary computer. The funny thing is that they have a perfectly good 55" 1080p TV screen that they only use for the nightly news, and occasional other shows. I think that that would be something to take advantage of... BTW, I am building in a Xigmatek Nebula (aluminum, not the plastic one) which I think is one of the sexiest looking MiniITX cases out there under $80. Bought: [ $60 ] -- Xigmatek Nebula MiniITX Aluminium case [ $30 ] -- RAIDMAX XT 400W Power supply (a bit overkill for the rest of the below partlist) To-Buy: [ $50 ] -- AMD Athlon 5350 [ $20 ] -- (with rebate) MSI MiniITX AM1I Motherboard [ $23 ] -- G.Skill Ripjaws X 4GB 1866MHz CL9 DDR3 SDRAM [ $40 ] -- Silicon Power S60 128GB SSD --=--=--=--=--=--=--=-=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=-- I am being funded by them for the rest of the system, and I have to keep those parts under $150 (preferably ~$125 by decree of mis abuelos). As for an OS, I am going to be using Linux (Slackware/Arch Linux, which I have grown up on), and probably KDE Plasma 5 DE. Do you think that the system can handle it? And in general, what do you all think of it? (And if you offer an "refinements", then I would like it to be on newegg, as I have had the best experience with them, especially with RMAs)
  7. Well, here is my opinion on the situation: 390 beats 970 just about everywhere, and 390X beats the 980 In Windows 10 Latest drivers, espeically at 1440p/high-resolutions. If you want to get the 390X, go for the Sapphire Nitro or MSI Twin Frozer cards. (I personally prefer MSI)
  8. 290 hands down PSU: Seasonic (1st choice) or EVGA G2/B2/GS (2nd choice)
  9. This ^^^ It is your best bet, and I know that AMD generally does better at higher resolutions, so yeah... Go with the 390.
  10. Well, first off, some HD 7000 series GPUs are advertized to be optimized for DX12, so there is a good reason why the refreshes are DX12 (Win10) ready. Its all in the DX12 optimizations and the drivers, so if AMD tries harder on their drivers, they can actually squeeze some more performance out of their cards.
  11. 380 looks like your overall best bet.
  12. BTW: 380X To be released on the 15th, though it probably won't be in stores until 17th-20th or later...
  13. Dual 390s will beat Titan X in a lot of games, and the better DoublePrecision will help with anything else other than gaming. Plus, AMD's CF does better than NVDA's SLI. If you can, you might want to give X99 and a 5820k a try. Broadwell-E (6800K-6950X) will also be using X99, so you will have upgradability for another generation. Plus, 5820k can hold its own against the 6700k, for nearly identical prices.
  14. I think CPU stress test would be prime95, but I am not really familar with CPU stress testing..
  15. Oops. Well, I forgot to post a rather important link in the OP. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/466206-which-cpu-for-a-server/?p=6255698 This is more for a personal, web-hosting, NodeJS sandbox, online mathmatical calculator, whatnot-hobby server. Not exactly for gaming (I mean, it could be), but more for more intensive math-workload and server hosting (hence the quad-core athlon over the dual-core pentium g3258).
  16. But are they at similar latencies? I have 2400MHz @ CL10 and 1866MHz @ CL9.
  17. So, I am going to be getting a Mobo + RAM for my recently aquired Athlon II x4 860K. I need a mITX mobo for my Silverstone rvz01 mITX case. Anyway, the mobo is the MSI mITX A88XI AC V2 : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WB9N1ZO/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me= The CPU is obviously the Athlon II x4 860K. And the RAM is either --> 8 GB Patriot Viper DDR3 2400MHz (10-12-12-30) or --> 8 GB Patriot Viper DDR3 1866MHz (9-10-9-27) Now, the kicker here is that I can get the RAM for about the exact same price, (give or take $2 occasionally) I know that the timings and clock speeds have everything to do with it, especially with APUs, but this is no APU. I am getting a dGPU to go with this thing (260x), so it really won't boost performance too much... But since I am here, I want to know is if there are any benfits for one over the other, and also if there are any incompatibilites. Can I even use the 2400MHz RAM with my Athlon II x4 860K? Thnx in advance, robinspi.
  18. I have the athlon and I can't get the pentium. The other guy already built his own system with it... :\ I suppose. I have heard that GPUs are good for high-end math calculations, and I am might be putting a NodeJS sandbox for some friends on it. IDK If that is even GPU intensive, but hey.... can't hurt. And I can probably scavenge a cheap GPU from somebody I know for the time being. (While I do some more research...)
  19. Re-read the first sentence (though it is a little less obvious). I was offered an AMD x4 860k or a pentium g3528, not I bought
  20. @djdwosk97: Hosting my own website and file hosting. Maybe some computation online or game hosting as well. It's a hobby machine. Search didn't take too long. I'll just wait for this sexy looking thing to get back in stock. Hopefully the rebate lasts and I can get it for $80. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131625
  21. OK. I'll look around the bowels of the interwebs to find one... As it is, I want to spend the least amount possible on this thing. Edit: though at $60, the r7 250x is a steal.
  22. Try reading my first sentence of the OP again. Not really for gaming. I suppose I could, but ehhh... whatever.
  23. So, in another topic, I was talking about making my own server and such, and I decided the best chip to go with would be the amd athlon x4 860k (over the pentium I was offered). I need to couple it with a dGPU (I was going to anyway...), and I found two that are in my price-range. I kinda didn't go to far beyond the realm of 2013, so gtx 600 series and radeon hd weren't quite as looked through... And after looking at the gtx 750's pricing, I just said to heck with it. I'm going to keep choices down to 2. Anyway, I am looking at a refurbished sapphire r7 260x (1GB GDDR5) and a new powercolor r7 250x (2GB GDDR5 <-- very important to take note of). The Sapphire is more expensive at $15 (after rebate), which made me wonder, is it really all that much better? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202130 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131662 Experience or just speculation is welcomed. I also want to buy this thing soon, so I can catch the rebate it I do end up picking the 250x. Thnx in advance. --robinspi
