I don't see a massive problem in this. It won't stop all thieves, as sure, the ones that are in large rings will probably find a way around it, but it's definitely going to help deter some smaller level ones, as well as those buying from them.

They already have chips in some of the largest brands on the market. Don't think that's an issue at all.
Eh, maybe, but depending on price that might not even be that bad. Especially if it covers wear and tear. A feature like this would also be a superb addition to HomeDepot (and any other company's) rental department. It won't add that much cost, as BT chips aren't that expensive.
Not sure how far thieves are going to go, opening things up and resoldering them is probably a bit much and they'd rather go for quicker flips.
It helps stop basic thieves. Not sure why you think it won't work?
It could also be a liability thing, much like having a car alarm lowers car insurance premiums.
There's already tons of electronics in drills. Hasn't been a problem yet. Many also already have BT incorporated. Car keys and phones aren't built to the same standard, so I'm not sure why you'd really use that as a comparison.
Unless all brands agreed to it, it's a strategic move not to tell thieves which brands contain it and which don't.
Probably, but that can be done at the time of shipment. Tools that aren't sold at HomeDepot wouldn't be affected, so they'd likely have a way to activate them prior to shipment. Pretty simple.
Very unlikely to happen, and you'd still have a receipt. No receipt? Wouldn't be able to warranty the tool anyway.

Back In My Day™ we had an Internet where any nerd could spin up a server on an old PII in their closet and post what ever they wanted on the internet.  You could host your own game servers, host your own IRC servers to chat, host your own webservers for your badly photoshopped Star Trek/X-Men fanfic series. Now we're here in the year 2021 where the internet is increasingly dominated by a small number of mega sized corporations and they control so much that the ultimately control much of the very ecosystems we use and what we can and can't do on a range of devices.  We're at the point that they can nearly erase access to anything should a nation they want to make money off of not like it.  Sure for a minority of hardcore users their are work arounds, but these workarounds are increasingly inaccessible to people on what are ubiquitous every day computing devices.

'important positions' is an extremely vague statement too. what exactly defines an important position, and what exactly about that validates this product? a google engineer could sell an empty box as the next big cure for cancer, that doesnt mean it's any good.
Also: given 'most of your team members' have jobs in other places... would that imply your amazing product is of such small volume that it cant sustain employee wages?

they made the '2008 free software' mistake of making a comparison chart, where their product checks all the boxes, and none of the others does.

both their websites combined contain less information about the product than the indiegogo campaign, the website is basicly just a marketing youtube video and a 'buy now' button.. there arent even any real product images, it's just renders.

scottyseng reacted to CerealExperimentsLain in Modernizing pfSenpai: My pfSense box
Once upon a time I got Gigabit internet and the my venerable Asus AC66U proved to be no match for that many packets going through NAT.  I assembled an old recycled ITX mobo with a Sandy Bridge i5 in it to run pfSense, but over the years it had problems with running hot due to the limited ventilation in the case I went with.  Today I got an J4005 board from ASRock as an 'Upgrade'.  This is less an 'Upgrade' of course, as it's not really faster, possibly a bit slower than the i5 2510E it replaced, but far less power demanding and 7 years newer in design.

The original build, it's an iStar USA thing, ITX and with a riser cable you can fit a PCIE expansion card.  Perfect for a little networking box without being too large.

The old interior with a recycled board and the Intel dual 1gbit NIC above it.  This is a mobile i5 so it's not that hot but this case isn't great.  If you'll notice I had to saw into the frame of the Noctua fan, the HDD 'rack' that goes on the lid otherwise didn't close cause they bumped into each other.  I cut away just enough space.  🙂  It's dual 1gig now, but since it's a PCIE card I can drop in upgrades without replacing the entire system.

New hotness vs old hotness.  The only downside is the new board's PCIE slot is only x2, but that's still 1000MB/s full duplex bandwidth, so if I ever have internet faster than 1000MB/s or 8000mbps, well, I'll be pleased to have that problem.

Just a shot of the NIC, I forget what this even is, it was cheap on eBay. 🙂

The 'upgraded' unit with it's 'new' rear IO.  You'll also notice the 200w FlexATX PSU has a 40mm noctua fan swapped in, the fan it came with 'buzzy' and rattled, this is near silent.

The big deal is this is much cooler, the old system idled around 24 watts out the wall and pulled 37 watts when downloading at about 1gbit.  The new J4005 board idles at 13.5 watts and with the same 1gbit download it only reaches 16.5.  So under a 1gbit load it's nearly half the power consumption.  It runs far cooler as a result too.  Pretty pleased and this, minus the NIC, will be in service until 2030 is I have my way.  I can just swap NICs as my internet gets faster.  I would like to switch to SFP+ at some point, it's how I connect to the internet anyway, I'm just using a media converter to convert the incoming fiber to copper before it goes into pfSense.

Oh I guess I should add, this hardware has entirely bypassed everything from my ISP other than the ISP supplied SFP+ transceiver, this box is doing the PPPoE and everything all on it's own.

The fact that we're seeing even Netflix jump onto the vtuber bandwagon does make me think that the space is starting to get a bit crowded and that this might become a trend that will fizzle out. The sheer amount of vtubers out there is just staggering and whenever I see ads for new talents I can't help but wonder if they're going to make it in the long run. That being said, they're all literally just streamers with a gimmick so as long as streaming is a thing there will (probably) be a decently sized vtuber community even if there's a dip in popularity similar to what happened in 2018.

scottyseng reacted to Kisai in Netflix joins Japan’s VTuber trend
They exist.  It doesn't help that some of the earlier attempts of male vtubers, were misguided. Girl vtubers just do what they want, and play what they want (even if they are bad at it,) or chat, or chill, or whatever. However Guy vtubers seems to just avoid/ignore interacting with their viewers so they can concentrate on their gitgud game, and that's just not interesting to watch in an interactive medium.

Most vtubers don't seem to know they need to be on Twitter to let their followers/subs know when they are streaming.

The Japanese vtuber space is almost entirely on Youtube. The Western vtuber space is almost entirely on Twitch. Discovery on Twitch however is abysmal, and the only way you will be noticed on Twitch is by being followed/raided by someone 10 times more popular than you, so twitch's algorithm starts recommending you due to being followed by other vtubers. Youtube on the other hand will readily send you down the vtuber rabbit hole, but mostly just the Japanese vtuber's where english channels have translated or made edits to the Japanese footage. If you're a western vtuber on Youtube, you're swimming in a sea of recommendations that will mostly be Hololive. Since Youtube lacks several mechanisms for growing your audience through peer recommendations you are basically beholden to following vtubers on Twitter to know when they are streaming.

If you want to be successful at being an entertainer (which is what vtubers are) you have to have something unique to your character. Simply being "sexy man" or "cute girl" is not enough. Sure you can stream with a model, or even a still drawing of one, but unless you are being entertaining, that model is no better than a logo.

An iPhone X/SE(2000) or XR is all you need for the Vtuber camera device. The M1 iMac/MacMini however will be slightly nerfed as one of the libraries (OVRLipSync) made by Occulus(Facebook) does not have a M1 native build, but that's for audio lipsync. The iPhone XS, 11, or 12 will also work. Those using the iPad have to rig up stands that obscure the rest of their equipment, and prefer the phone over the iPad. ARKit supports 52 blendshapes, which still puts it ahead of USB webcameras, and completely buries Android's ARCore.

That said, I'd still happily buy the iPad Pro as a portable device instead of using a laptop when travelling. It lasts far, far longer than an Intel laptop using an iGPU, and makes all "U" series CPU's look like a joke.

I think a lot of people on this forum tend to forget that their use case might not be the same as everyone else's.
I have taken some basic courses in AutoCAD, Blender, Photoshop and Adobe Premier, and I completed those courses on a Core 2 duo laptop with 4GB of RAM, a 5400 RPM hard drive and integrated Intel graphics. It was a bit slow from times to times, especially the startup time for the "larger" (relatively speaking) projects, but it worked just fine. It wasn't so slow that I felt "I need a new laptop!" either.

It's the same with people saying you "need" an 8 core CPU and an RTX 3070 to play games. You absolutely don't. You might want to have it, but not every needs it. Depends on use case.

I mean, the example of Photoshop speaks volume. 200 layers? I wonder how many Photoshop users actually have such massive projects. If you are designing a thumbnail for your Youtube video, or are participating in "photoshop battle" on Reddit then you probably don't even need 5 layers, and if that's what you are doing you are probably fine with it being a bit slow as well.

I really think it is a very, very small minority that benefits from AMD's slightly longer generation support.

If you are planning your builds properly and only upgrading when you actually need to, then your motherboard will be long outdated before you need to upgrade your CPU again.
Needing long supported motherboards might have been a thing back in the early 2000's when we got double the performance every year, but nowadays I honestly think you shouldn't upgrade more than like once every 4-5 years. If you upgrade more often than that you are most likely wasting money.

I know that most users here sees the world in black and white, and right now that world is "Intel bad. AMD good". But come on... At least be a bit objective here.

Rocket Lake is not great. In a lot of ways its really bad. There is no need to exaggerate or misconstrue the findings of the article to make it look bad.

Unless the rocket lake chips are significantly cheaper than AMD's 5000 series, or you really need AVX512, then there isn't really any point in getting this. Which is kind of what we expected to begin with. Rocket lake is a stopgap solution before alder lake.
Personally I'd recommend not buying anything right now. Even if pricing and availability was decent, we are so close to a new generation of four example DDR that if you wait 2 years or so, you will get something much better for the same money. More so than your typical "wait 2 years and get something better".
