Why are Microcenter cpu's always on sale?
scottyseng replied to Fat Cat11997's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
As a former Microcenter employee, their goal is to push software (ESET, NordVPN, and Office365 / Microsoft keys), services (such as them building your PC), and warranty plans (1 or 2 year on each parts or if you get a whole PC build, you can get a build warranty). It also is the reason why microcenter, at least at ours, will never have a self checkout. They want to entice you to buy something else alongside the CPU bundle using either the cashiers or the sales floor people. The bundle is just a way to get you in the store to get you to get more than just the CPU bundle. -
RAM problems, again...
scottyseng replied to XxSw4gmast3rxX's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Have you tried running a ram test like memtestx86 or a very hard CPU test like Intel burn test, occt, or linpack extreme? It may be a bad ram kit, it happens. Does the ram kit have a qvl? Does it list your motherboard? -
I was also surprised at the lack of actual news. Maybe no one wants to make the threads. Haha I usually check tech power up for news but miss the discussion that goes on here.

OMFG I've had so many LED light bulbs fail, so…
scottyseng replied to leadeater's status update on LinusTech's profile
Surprised Cree light bulbs haven't been mentioned here they are expensive but been headache free for me at our house. -
Have you tried factory resetting the router and updating the firmware? I remember there was a software bug with Asus routers recently.

Alert for LastPass Users, The Breach in August was Worse Than Expected
scottyseng replied to scottyseng's topic in Tech News
I'll admit fault with myself of hoping of not having to reset 200+ accounts, but I had a reasonable master password but it's not very comforting knowing the databases are out there. Currently having fun slowly migrating to Bitwarden Family. -
Summary In the previously mentioned breach in August, Lastpass mentioned encrypted data was downloaded but still secure. However, this recent update states the breach is worse than expected as actors can brute force decrypt the copied backup vaults that were removed out of their Lastpass secured cloud containers. Lastpass is advising users to reset and update all passwords, especially the master password. Quotes My thoughts As a Lastpass user myself, this is quite unsettling news compared to the original news about the breach back in August. I'll be resetting and moving all of my passwords to Bitwarden. I was in the process of doing so but with this recent update, I'll have to rush start that process. This is mainly a warning to any fellow Lastpass users like myself, or even former users, to start changing passwords immediately. We actually ran across this today at work setting up iPhones. We kind of have to keep pressing verify and pray. Or use iTunes to push the update.

BSOD with Memory Related Issues
scottyseng replied to scottyseng's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Fixed by enabling XMP, but setting RAM speed to 3400MHz. No crashes since. Edit: Sadly over time, it kept getting worse, with me only being stable at 2666MHz at the XMP timings at 1.37v on DRAM voltage. I actually found a random amazon review that mentioned that the RAM stick order mattered, and that each pair of RAM needed to be on the same channel. Since this was a set of 4 from GSkill, the two on the top of the packaging needed to be in one channel and same for the other. I had to label each RAM stick, shuffle the positions, and I got it to post on 3600MHz on XMP (Which I could not do at all up until this point). I ran Testmem5 on anta777's extreme profile for two cycles (8 hours), Linpack extreme on 10GB for 5 passes, 30GB for two, Intel Burn Test at maximum for two, and it is running solid now. More edit a few months later. The ram continued to act up and gskill confirmed the odd behavior was faulty ram. I rma'd the ram and it has been working great since. First time in my life I've run across faulty ram. -

It crashes with XMP off. 2666MHz. -
BSOD with Memory Related Issues
scottyseng replied to scottyseng's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Will try one stick at a time, good point there. This is a clean install of Windows Server 2022 Standard (Yes, I run windows server as my personal PC OS). It also does it with Windows 10 when I was testing it. It would suck if the memory controller can't handle the kit. The whole reason of upgrading was to get more RAM. -
I recently obtained a 9900K and a Maximus Formula XI board. I bought a GSkill 128GB kit of RAM (4 x 32GB @ 3600MHz C18) F4-3600C18Q-128GVK. I'm running in to constant BSOD errors regarding RAM (Memory Management, Unexpected end of stack). Any ideas on what may be the case? What I've done so far: Ran Intel Burn Test at maximum, Linpack Extreme at 10GB for 10 runs (then 30GB for 5), Cinebench R23 for an hour, and Memtestx86+ for 10 hours. These all passed with the CPU around 70-75C. I did update the BIOS to the latest BIOS, only loaded the ASUS recommended default (which does turn Multicore enhancement on) and used XMP 2 for the RAM profile. However, I am running into issues where the PC randomly BSODs after letting the PC idle for some time. Now it's gotten to the point where windows will only stay open for 5 minutes before bluescreening. I read that the RAM may be overheating so I will put a fan directly over it and the VRM. I have even tried putting the CPU to stock stock (no Multicore enhancement) and no XMP (2666MHz) and it still crashes. I also note that the BIOS now refuses to post at all with XMP now stating "The System has posted in safe mode."

I'm really considering windows server to be the real version of windows with all of the stuff they're pulling on normal windows. Already tired enough of the edge ads as I replace computers at work.

When the home server rack has a better environment than the office server rack.... Looks great though. Curious to see how it looks once all of the ethernet is patch paneled in. This really makes me want a ubiquiti 10Gb switch now.

If cost is no object, Belden is some of the best cable. I use fs.com cable myself personally. I used to use monoprice but the jacket wasn't as smooth. I think sftp is a overkill unless you are running next to power lines.

Yes, they will work fine. I use keystone couplers instead of punch down keystone because I haven't had too much luck with my punch down keystone jacks where a wire would come loose once I pushed it in the wall or messed with the keystone panel. The only downside is that this takes a fair space up in the wall to have clearance behind the coupler. I run unifi pow switches at home on my server rack. At a client's home, I ran injectors before they upgraded to a switch. That jobsite I did entirety using keystone couplers.

Looking for home network insight / advise (WiFi 6)
scottyseng replied to HollywoodX0's topic in Networking
I'd also recommend the ubiquiti system. I have an edgerouter 4 and two ac-pros and have had no issues at all. -
Must be one of those WebMD vets. Haha

Congratulations! I'm still working on my CCNA and hoping to get DevOps as well.

How to configure a 100 mbps ethernet speed to 1 gigabit
scottyseng replied to gtr2244's topic in Networking
The Fios Quantum is a gigabit router with gigabit ports. I have used it before upgrading my home network. I would double check the ethernet from the ONT to the router and from router to your PC. Check for new drivers for your ethernet adapter on your motherboard as well. -
We got a ton of reviews at microcenter for the same thing when I worked there.

I had this strange situation as well. I'm not a fan of Apple but I still advised my friend to get the new Macbook Air as it matched his needs well (battery life, reasonable performance). Even he was shocked at my recommendation, but it really is a great product due to the M1. I myself have ordered an iPad Pro, which I never thought I ever would, because Apple does tablets best. To date, the only manufacturer for phones that keeps them updated that long is Apple. Android phones are fun if you like to tinker, but realistically most only have 2 (maybe 3 if you're lucky) years of updates. I may also get a Mac Mini just so I have a device to learn MacOS on (Trying to be well rounded for IT work).

F for network card. I'm more amazed it held up that long.
