Tenelia reacted to leadeater in Base model Apple M2 MacBook Pro SSD Up To 50% slower than M1 MacBook Pro SSD | Half the NAND chips, half the speed
Moving large files from where to where? Going off device interface choice will be the limit not local SSD almost always. And also you don't know what you're missing out if you don't know.

Also use cut and paste, it's instant and just a filesystem metadata update. Copying files around use case is way overblown to justify a use case where someone might notice, if they have the information required to notice and the time difference is large enough to take notice.

Hardly think anyone is actually going to care, being absolutely honest here.

Over 1GB/s is enough for almost any file format, codec, compression etc etc etc for video editing. Twice as fast as more than what is needed is no net benefit or gain here. Numbers are just numbers without meaning and context, bigger is better but better != necessary.

Oh no it's a "Pro" device that can literally do anything a professional could want or need to do. Not seeing the problem here?

May I remind everyone lower SSD performance on small capacity SSDs has always been a thing, this is not an Apple thing. It exists on Samsung SSDs, Kioxia, Micron, WD, Seagate etc. If you buy small you get less, has been the case for very long time. It also exists on M1 Mac devices too so 🤷‍♂️

Can people stop repeating this utter idiocy? Updates are very important on devices that store private data as well as user finances.

People keep repeating this nonsense because they are so used to utterly pathetic support by 99,99% of Android phone makers who can't be bothered to support anything for more than a 1 or 2 years and we're talking flagship phones costing stupid money. That 0.01% in Android segment is the Samsung which is the only bright exception with outstanding software support from Galaxy A50 series and above. Both, major OS updates as well as timely monthly security updates without skipping a single month.

Updates of apps and stuff that can be delivered through GooglePlay only goes as far. For rest you need firmware level updates and those are only delivered by phone vendor itself.

It's funny everyone presents it as "Apple wants taxpayers money!!!!!!11111". Do people think companies that make physical ID's are charities? They get tax payer money too for design and production of gov issued ID's. But evil Apple, how dare they expect monetary compensation for work! And from your taxes! Outrageous!

Tenelia reacted to RejZoR in [UPDATE: Windows 10 TOO!] Microsoft forces Edge to be the only option for Windows 11 apps & widgets (Antitrust? What Antitrust?)
It doesn't work this way. Apple's enforcing of shit actually makes sense to a degree and isn't annoying because everyone WILLINGLY wants to be there. Whatever Microsoft always tries turns into absolute vomitfest. Also Microsoft doesn't have that luxury with Windows. You can't shill your OS as this open platform for 30+ years and suddenly you want to become Apple with tightly integrated and closed ecosystem. It just doesn't work that way and Microsoft's garbage "S Mode" or "Windows 10 S" is a testament to that. It's the most useless OS in existence. Only apps you can download and use are from Microsoft Store and saying their store is total garbage ever since it was introduced with Windows 8 back in 2012 would be an understatement. After 3 years of using iPhone I absolutely can't say the same for their offering... And we all know what happens when OS doesn't have apps. It's how all mobile OS died off.

What's even more funny is that Microsoft gives no one any incentive to use their store. Not even software vendors to officially host their stuff. You have few sprinkled here and there and that's it. There is bunch of questionable "companies" that host stuff there and even charge for them. Like for example something basic as 7-zip. That's published by some GNUStudio I never heard of or know it's related to Igor Pavlov (the actual author of 7-zip) and they charge 10€ for what's otherwise free. Microsoft seems to be totally fine with it and this is something that is suppose to instill confidence into using their trash app store? LOL, not a chance.

I don't care, the harm done to the industry by alphabet having a monopoly on this outweighs the convenience and minor savings you might get by allowing it. Why are "free market" types always the most opposed to actually having competition?
It's actually incredible how much I don't care. You say people won't be able to pump and dump random stocks with no value? Good. Certainly, if something like the gamestop squeeze were to happen in that scenario then everyone involved would have to pay taxes on the stock they own at that time, meaning the tax load is fairly distributed among those looking for make a payday - and if it's artificially inflated by them, boo hoo, too bad, next time don't speculate on bullshit stock hoping to scam fools into pumping it for you.

If you can't convert stocks into cash well enough to pay taxes on your wealth that's your problem. These are all artificial issues created by billionaires to avoid paying taxes on money they'll never use. Forgive me if I can't be arsed to pity these assholes who buy private spaceships while others starve. Tell me if it makes sense to you that a multibillionaire should get tax refunds because they froze up some money into stocks and were able to declare fake losses.

I think from the observations of pilot projects in some schools over here in Asia, the results have been a lot better. Conversations are much more thoughtful and long-form. I've found a lot more meaning in reading online discussions. Much less personal attacks or anger-induced debates. That said...

Did anonymous accounts disappear? No. Did whistleblowers disappear? Nah. If anything, it consolidated a lot of voter attention on the official channels to get better, especially with all the workforce exploitations during covid. I think most countries in Europe will also see a larger social benefit, but I'm not too sure how that'd benefit USA given the corporate lobbying capture.

Tenelia got a reaction from Uttamattamakin in Ryzen 5700G Already Being Marked WAY UP.
AFAIK from speaking to OEMs and the manufacturer (AMD, NVIDIA), they've got restrictions on how GPUs can be sold:
    1) Anything more than 2 per customer (per credit card used) has to go to a distributor or approved retail partner.
    2) OEM allocations should maintain the same proportion allocation.

These are the two restrictions I can confirm exist, so my deduction is that miners have developed entire processes to get around the limits here. The usual retailers around southeast asia have put us all on a 3-month waiting list, and that's if they get stock too...

Tenelia reacted to TetraSky in Crypto Miners buying up entire power plants
Yes, I welcome the news of hydro power being used! But.
Straight from the article, right after the line about hydro :
Natural gas IS fossil fuel. Even if it weren't natural gas and was instead something like biogas made from wastes, it will still create CO2(and CH4). Just not as much as coal or oil, but still about 50% of coal powered plants and a hell more than hydro.
They aren't the only ones who bought a gas burning power plants, because there's a lot more of those waiting to be grabbed in the US, than available hydro electric dams. Just have to look at new york, where Digihost bought a gas firing powerplants of 60MW. And that's just the ones in the articles. There's plenty more examples of miners buying other power plants out there.

And then, I also looked at the source material on Curbed and there's this nice little paragraph near the end
    https://www.curbed.com/2021/07/crypto-currency-mining-old-power-plants.html
But hey, I'm sure all the miners who may move to these states after fleeing from china, are totally going to go the renewable route! I'm sure there's plenty more renewable power sources just lying abandoned in these states, totally no abandoned gas, coal or oil firing power plants that they have plenty of, no sir.

If they'd all actually buy old random Hydro dams that they found abandoned, GREAT.

But do you sincerely believe that they all will? We have one example of them doing so and more of them doing the opposite and the rest are more likely to just get it from the grid instead of spending a couple millions straight up buying a power plant like Digihost did in New York.
Where are miners more likely to go, a state that doesn't want them, or one that is welcoming them with open arms? And what's the main power generation of these states? Likely fossil fuel.

Call me cynical if you will, but I don't trust miners to make the best choice for the environment and I'm not sure why anyone would.

Even if it is renewable energy being used, we're still talking about an opportunity cost. Renewable energy is a scarce resource. If we are using it for one thing, we are necessarily not using it for another. The pertinent questions are, "What is being powered by non-renewable energy now that otherwise could have been powered by renewable energy?", and, "Is the use of renewable energy on mining crypto a good allocation of our limited resources?".

Hydro dams are not exactly green energy as those have massive effect on ecosystems ocean wide. Fish populations grow smaller as coastal waters get less nutrients because dams stop sediment from getting through. Also huge impact because fish cant go past em upstream.

Tenelia reacted to Kisai in Tim Cook testifies against epic games - epic v apple update
That doesn't work either. Once you release something, the horses have bolted and it's pointless to lock the door after-the-fact. The DMCA abuse you see right now is the assumption that people aren't paying for the things they use, which is really an ass-backwards way of dealing with copyright infringement.

Price discrimination, where prices are offered at higher or lower prices in different parts of the world is part of the problem. If you can't offer the same product for the same price everywhere in the world, then you are asking too much for the product in the first place. Strange how this works for hardware, but not software isn't it? US prices tend to be cheaper than they are in China and India.

We have to stop applying the logistics of hardware to software. Software can be infinitely copied for 0$. There is no logistical cost to digital distribution. So a reasonable person would go "Oh, well if it costs the company nothing to make a copy of it, then why am I paying for it?" And that's the impetus pirates operate on. You don't see hardware piracy, just counterfeits, and the counterfeits cost money to produce and can damage everything you use it with, so you may as well not risk buying the crappy counterfeit. Pirated software though? Malware, Randomware, viruses, etc are endemic to to the piracy scene, but only "Software" has the potential to wreck your computer or device. Pirated photos, comics, music, movies, anime, etc zero risk to the downloader. That's why the RIAA/MPAA type of copyright lobbyists keep wanting to treat fair use of a copyrighted material as equal to having never paid for the content in the first place. The assumption is that nobody has the right to use anything without going through them.

We should be treating copyright infringement as what it is, the copyright holder either
    a) Not aware that there is a market for their content in a certain language/device
    b) Not able to license (see video games and comics that are movie tie ins) it for distribution

Of which piracy is going to be the only solution for either of those until the copyright holder makes smarter choices. There's no point treating those pirates like they are operating a billion dollar counterfeiting operation, when the consumers are people who have no legitimate way to buy the product in the first place.

However there is also a huge section of the English market who refuse to pay for anything, and they are the ones who want side-loading because then they never have to buy anything while still having the benefit of the high quality hardware.

Again, it's pretty clear that the end-game here is EGS not wanting to pay Apple. Epic can claim they are acting in the consumer's best interests, but THEIR OWN STORE doesn't even discount games that are available on elsewhere. The publishers want 79.99 per game, and that's what they get listed at, no matter what store it's on.
