I too bought a screwdriver and I bought a backpack. I have no complaints and it was well worth the money. If you want quality products, you pay from them. Thats why I always laughed at people complaining about the price.

As fun as its been watching all the hate watchers fall over themselves to show who's the most outraged, I'd much rather a return to actual content. Kinda hopeful that the GN video will nudge them to quality over quantity. More Tech Longers, and a regular Emily/Linux video pleeeeze.

Dude, who cares? this whole thing is between linus media group and gamers nexus. I don't understand the fanboy crap but that is on the fanboys. It makes no sense to me to glorify these people even if I like to watch their stuff.

All we can do is sit back and grab some popcorn, or get on with our lives and come back when the dust has settled. Personal beefs can stay between those involved. Community evangelism is just as bad as any wrong doing from the videos.

Nobody gets anything from blindly supporting anyone. Nobody gets any medals in this fight.

I made some comments on the video in the comments section, but it's total trash. He says it's an unbiased video when 3/4 of it is taking down GN, giving Linus the benefit of the doubt, assuming he knows what Linus was thinking, while giving Steve none of the same deference. Really huge waste of time watching it.

I am 49 min in (where's the watering hole?) I will finish the video.

So far... Dr. Cutress talk a big game about analyzing language and psychology, well he was getting emotional talking about Steve and said "You" then stuttered and say "He". He felt he was talking to Steve directly right there. He also said "as someone who has actually done investigative journalism".

The snide remark on GN never having done "actual" investigative journalism is insane. I wonder if it slipped him or it was intentional. I will go back and look for the timestamps when I'm done. Just saying he's not as objective as he might think he is. No one is. We CAN'T be objective. So criticizing GN for that while recording his video like this? The pot calling the kettle black.

Another point is when he mentions how Steve sort of "degraded" The Head of Labs by just referring  to him as an old marketinglead.. He explains how The Head of Labs used to have HIS old job at Anandtech.. And is so hurtful and infuriated by that assumption to The Head of Labs but... it really comes off as personal.. as if he doesn't realize he's taken it as an attack at his credentials.

Anyway, I'll keep watching and come back with timestamps in.... like an hour...

Dr. Ian Cutress talks about the Head of Labs:
48:20 he starts talking about the Head of Labs.
ZOOM IN: "To de rate him as some senior director [...] definitely a twist of the knife, for sure"

The mention of where people within LMG were previously employed had nothing to do with the tests and inaccuracies. It had to do with a larger conversation of conflicts of interest and was one small part of a larger puzzle. But Dr Cutress took this personally. This man had his former job, and those qualifications were being dismissed... because they were not the point.

    39:09
Here is where he starts and ends up saying "as someone who has actually done investigative journalism".

He might not be intentionally implying that GN hasn't ever done actual investigative journalism... but he's picking everything apart and "being anal", stating he analyzes the psychology behind GN's words. So I guess I'm doing the same.

I got four words for you Linus - slow the fuck down!!!

You are like that kid in high school who could never pay attention beyond 5 minutes, exhibits all the symptoms of ADHD and is a handful for parents to manage.

As for Steve's video, I feel it was a long time coming to finally address many of the issues. These hit personal to me too as for many years I was doing the same job - reviewing tech gear online. The big difference in my work routine was I adhered to one golden rule - NO DEADLINES!!! I would take however much time I needed with a product to look at it properly, test it, review it, take it through its paces and form an educated, hands-on opinion before sitting down and start bashing away at the keyboard.

And while I was nowhere near pushing out multiple articles a week, the work that I did do was well put together, accurate and detailed. I honestly cannot recall where I needed to get back and significantly redo a piece because I had made a serious error, and you would be hard pressed to find a piece where there even is an "EDIT" remark - and that's across over 100 credited articles.

To be honest, I have stopped watching LTT videos this year. It's just not worth my time any more. The clown-show antics, the ads, all your fucking segways... I don't need to hear it. If you are that desperate for ad revenue then you are doing something wrong, more so when other tech reviewers survive without all the nonsense sprinkled in.

Case in point - for years I have been bashing you guys over your horrendous laptop reviews. Not once has Alex criticized a manufacturer when they sent him a laptop with a horrible keyboard layout. Not once!!! How the hell can he call himself a serious laptop user and expert critic if he is missing those glaring deficiencies??? I have been using laptops for 22+ years and can immediately tell if a keyboard layout is rubbish or not. Alex has no business reviewing laptops when he doesn't even know his way around keyboards!!!

The result of this lazy attitude from leading review outlets - manufacturers become lazy too. In shopping for a replacement laptop I have found it next to impossible to find one with a proper keyboard. They either mash the cursor keys together, screw up the zero on the numpad or place the damn power button where the delete key should be. Try editing a document where instead of replacing text you power down your laptop - an absolutely maddening experience!!! In years past I would have expected BS like this from the likes of Clevo and Acer/Gateway but today even the big names like HP and Alienware have decided not to give a shit when it comes to placing a proper keyboard on their $2000+ products. And when manufacturers become lazy that's when consumers suffer.

So yes, what Steve did had to be done, because when reviewers get complacent manufacturers follow, and that's never good for the consumer.

This all sounds lovely but when you explicitly say you won't take the time to do a review properly by putting the block on the card it was made for it raises the question of why even build the facility at all.

GN/Steve was so in the wrong to not give Linus the common courtesy of a phone call for his response about the water block.
As for the LTT review of the water block, well, I have my own opinion of it. Is it well over priced for what it is, yes! Was LTT the one that should have reviewed a water block. heck no. That should have been sent to @JayzTwoCents but I'd put money they tried to and he turned them down. Is it a commercially viable product? Given that it's over 1000$ Canadian I'd expect not.
Here's the thing with reviews, they are an opinion. This wasn't a sponsored video. They sent him the product, asked for him to check it out and give his thoughts on it.

If it's a bad product, or not. It's his opinion.

That being said, I'm neither a fan of GN or LTT. Do I watch LTT sure, I don't GN though. GN/Steve tries way too hard to push Drama. His Video Titles just prove that alone. Steve obviously had an angle in doing the video. Same as he does with any of his Drama videos. But hey Drama and sex still sell.

I subscribed to the forums just to be able to reply to that.

I don't think that that was the response that the community expected. Steve has carefully prepared and built a very strong narrative that is damning for LTT/LMG. Do you realize how shocking the Billet Labs part is?

If you want to quash this, you basically have 2 options: either strongly debunk his claims (you'd better not miss then), or acknowledge them, swallow your pride, and unequivocally apologize to Billet Labs and the community.
I don't think that there's a nuanced in-between where you stand on your shaky ground and come out ahead.

I would suggest consulting your team (and not some yes-men), because that's a tricky communication issue that shouldn't be solved without brainstorming it.

Many people don't read the forums, but will have watched Steve's video. You'll have to address it on your channel somehow.

I just wanted to add a my two cents.

I'm a sysadmin in my 30s for a company larger than lmg in NYC.

Because of the frankly constant errors that always get an asterick while leaving the bad data in place I never had an inkling to take the LABs seriously.
At best my view has been that it will at least be better than userbenchmark, but still would need to be taken as nothing more than quick reference data, rather than a standard to follow.

I don't feel Linus ever fully accepts his errors and has some reason why he's still right in some one. And that is displayed numerous times in the GN video. The Mouse video being a good example of that.

LMG states to keep them to their mistakes but then get all butthurt when it's aired out.

The backlash is not people piling on. It's all the small voices who have not been heard taking the opportunity to be heard.

The situation with the water block being auctioned off is not handwavable by monetary compensation. Extremely egregious behavior that should have been admitted upfront instead of someone else having to put it on blast.

Lastly when all the data errors you make are public then it's perfectly acceptable to tell the public about those errors. GN is right for not going through private channels. Viewers have a right to know that LMG is consistently publishing bad data that they won't fix, take too long to, or do a poor job of showing corrections.

Very well written piece from GN. I hope the response coverers all bases of the issues raised, preferablely with its own video. I think that's going to be required as not many will see the part in a middle of a WAN show where its addressed. If the part about the waterblock is correct, its gonna be a really bad look for LTT, especially with him not even giving it $500 of time.

Billet Labs have been treated disgustingly by Linus and LMG and they should be ashamed of themselves.

They set that block up for failure from the start, used wrong card model entirely, wasn’t mounted correct as a result, shot the block to bits in the review because they made a mes sod the review, didn’t send it back and then sold it at auction.

And in the WAN show he just continued to double down on dumping all over the block even though LMG did everything wrong.

That section made me very upset and Linus deserves everything he gets for that one.

As for the shoddy results from tests, well when you don’t take stickers of a mouse then criticise it ……. hardly a shock the rest of the standards are suspect.

There are some questions around impartiality but the biggest issue is how dirty they did billet labs.

I haven't finished watching the entire video yet, but I did watch the section regarding the Billet Labs prototype cooler being sold at LTX, and that's very disturbing if true. I hope that LMG explains how this happens, and I hope they don't try to chalk it up to some communication issue or something. Selling a prototype that you didn't have permission to sell is disgusting already, but doing so after agreeing twice to return the unit to the company that owns it is even worse.

If the thing with the Billet Labs cooler is true then I'm not sure how Linus or anyone at LMG could possibly make up for such a bad decision. This is coupled with the inaccurate testing of the product that made it seem terrible.

Personally I completely agree about LMG rushing things far too often. I've been watching LTT for around a decade, and as the company has grown and grown the quality of the content hasn't increased at the same rate. The inaccuracies are more frequent than ever, and it's something that the leadership doesn't seem to care about fixing. I really hope LMG addresses some of these issues.

This needs to be addressed, and not just in a WAN Show segment.

I'm not running a multi-million dollar company, and I'm not responsible for hundreds of people's livelihoods, but in my opinion, it would be the best thing to do to cut down the quantity of videos in favor of quality. A mistake here and there is fine; after all, we are all just human, but some of the bigger ones just can not happen.

Again, I don't know how it would affect their bottom line, but some changes need to happen. In the end, LMG has a responsibility to their viewers because many of us influence purchasing decisions by implicitly trusting the accuracy of reviewers. This is not to be taken lightly.

I love LMG and I hope they can learn from this.
