No, it's not that simple to just find another job. I think this has been addressed already on numerous occasions, but finding a specific job that you want to do and you also have studied for doesn't always get 'gifted' right in front of you. It's such a simplified way of thinking that you just created this illusion that things can go in just a snap of a finger.

Also, who in their right mind would 'like' Amazon? There's already so much negativity around it that it still blows my mind people would still defend them.

Not entirely surprising. It does surprise me how many people are ready to do PR work for corporations such as these on a pro bono basis, though.

Morgan Everett got a reaction from Valentyn in Nvidia Will Temporarily Stop Selling 3080/3090's on Their Online Store
I meant the FE card. As for those retailers, stock was almost nonexistent, and the first and last (at least) illegally increased prices as buyers made their way through the checkout process. Prices remain inflated even now.

Morgan Everett reacted to porina in RTX 3K card supply super low,+ Retailer stats.
I don't recall the 20 launch shortages to last very long. They were there for sure.

I've bought the low end CPUs (1600, 2600, 3600) at or within a few days of launch. Yes, there were shortages but supply eased soon after. I do recall the 3900 and later 3950 did take much longer to have any significant stock. Lower parts were fine.

The only one I got near launch was Vega, but that was in the crypto boom so I'd consider than an unusual scenario. I happened to be on the right site at the right time and grabbed one. At the time, pretty much getting any mid to higher end GPU (AMD or nvidia) was difficult at any price.

I think one part of the "problem" is that for people wishing to remain at the upper end hardware scale, they get the most benefit from buying early in the cycle. This is made worse in that releases are often very far apart.

As a parallel to this, the UK car industry used to see most of their new sales at one time of year. Number plates here have a date component to them, so if you want your car to look "new", you bought one as soon as the number changed. The problem of course is that you'd get a rush for sales at one time, and this has a knock on effect in that future time based service is also related to that. The system was later changed so the date part changed twice a year, helping to spread the load across the year.

Right now, what's the gap between major GPU generations?

    Maxwell - sept 2014
    Pascal - jul 2016
    Turing - sept 2018
    Turing "super" - jul 2019
    Ampere - sept 2020

    Polaris - jun 2016
    Vega - aug 2017
    Navi - jul 2019
    Next Navi - oct 2020

So on nvidia's side, we're looking at 2 years between major generations, with a "Super" refresh to help a little. AMD do a little better there, we're getting 1 or 2 year gaps. I do think that the rush to upgrade with a new generation would be reduced if there were simply more refreshes, even if the increment between generations were smaller.

I'm not sure mining is a major factor today. The gains are pretty slim compared to the bubble, and it takes niche circumstances to make it profitable. Also I wouldn't blame the tool for what it is used for.

Part of the blame lies with the retailers. Here in Britain, Scan increased the cost of one of the cards as I was making my way through the payment process by £50, having increased it by £40 earlier. I'm fairly sure that's illegal.

Morgan Everett reacted to Commodus in Sony has announced a PS5 event
I have to disagree -- there's a lot more to it than that.

People get consoles because they're accessible, affordable ways to play a wide variety of games. You don't have to drop a small fortune on components that become obsolete after just a few years; you don't have to worry about driver revisions or other OS hassles besides installing the occasional firmware update. For the most part, you can just... play. Imagine that.

The exclusives help, but they're a factor mainly if you're a PC enthusiast who bristles at the thought of being denied access to a good game. I'd say the clear majority of buyers are simply everyday people who either can't rationalize the cost of a gaming PC or just aren't keen on the time and effort involved. For that matter, I can imagine that some people would rather not finish a workday of sitting at a computer for several hours by sitting at the computer for a few more hours. Plunking yourself on the couch can be a relief by itself.

Proposed data privacy law could send company execs to prison for 20 years

What's missing from these data privacy law proposals is the awareness that companies could aggregate personal data and then sell it without it being any identifiable person's data - yet, the existence and value of that data would still be a person's personal data, and its acquisition was only possible by taking it from somebody. The cost of generating that data would still be imposed upon individuals by companies which would still be enriching themselves are people's expense, and therefore still be unjust enrichment, misuse of property, etc.

Data-privacy legislation needs to mandate that people are able to never have their data (as in, data that's not essential to a requested function) harvested by companies in the first place, so that the matter of reselling it, or anonymizing or aggregating it is never a possibility in the first place.

I oppose companies commercializing my computer, my electricity, my hardware, software, housing, etc, and my time and my activity to profit themselves. What they're doing is data-theft and unjust enrichment. It is literally no different than if some hacker installs a cryptocurrency mining virus on everybody's computers that forwards the proceeds of mining digital currency to their own wallet.

It's theft, misuse of property, unjust enrichment, commercialization without a license, etc, in their most basic forms.

Since companies are unilaterally using our personal and personally-owned data to profit themselves, aren't we therefore all also entitled to do the same with their data? Since companies are making us subsidize their businesses by stealing our electricity, processing power, components, space, time, etc... aren't all therefore justified to do the same with theirs? The actions of the companies that create revenue from our data justify any attacks on their servers by outside parties, as well as any acquisition and exploitation of the data that's on their internal servers and private computers.

If you think you don't care about your data being harvested and sold, then kindly PM me so that we can arrange for me to install a cryptocurrency miner on your system that will use your hardware, electricity, and processing power to mine cryptocoins while funnelling all the proceeds to a private cryptocurrency wallet of mine. This arrangement will be even better for you than what corporations are doing because it won't involve any personal data of yours being distributed.

And if you oppose having me do that to your PC, then you've proven that you believe everybody is entitled to not have their data harvested by companies in the first place, let alone sold and used to profit companies.

Even in "major countries", if you count Britain in that. I've needed service from Apple on several previous occasions, and every contact has been with a "premium reseller", and every experience I've had has therefore (?) been either poor or terrible (and I've seen others treated similarly). You may be surprised by how few Apple stores are out here.

I've been an iPhone user for 2 years but before that I've been pretty much an avid android user, rooting, custom ROM, kernel, I've been there.

I don't know how your experience has been but my iPhone has given my a way more consistent experience. I always get my update, the first moment the software is out. My 3rd party apps will always work, or at the very least will work better than in android except for google apps.

When I spend $750 on iPhone 7 and pre-ordering my XS Max, I know I'm getting the current best hardware, software support for at least 4-5 years, excellent resale value, non-problematic 3rd party apps and probably the best customer support in the industry, 15 minutes drive from my home.

Morgan Everett reacted to Lathlaer in Rumor? nVidia RTX 2080 & 2080 Ti Reviewers Guide Leak? Lots of 4K
The notion that after waiting 2 years for new architecture people should be happy with 0% FPS boost because of raytracing and DLSS is, quite frankly, ridiculus.

More importantly, this is not how you do business. NVIDIA is in the business of selling GPU's and they would not be able to sell a single Turing GPU to a whole bunch of segment (Pascal owners) if that would be their goal.

Somehow they could retain similar prices between 780 and 980 and 1080 and yet the performance boost was not 0% there.

I get it, there is ray tracing and there is DLSS. But you have to put some kind of value on those technologies and that value is not absolute. There is no scenario in which an owner of a Titan Xp will consider 2080ti as a "successor" to their GPU if it offers 0% FPS boost, raytracing notwithstanding.
