Austin is not an electrical engineer though and it was only used briefly. So I wouldn't assume from a YouTuber they fully know what they're doing.

32 Gigs is probably plenty if this is just going to be a server for Plex, HA and some other small bits and pieces.
I'd recommend looking into Proxmox VE (PVE) as a general OS and build on top of that.

The 1080 can be used for whenever transcoding is needed, just need to run an unlock script so it can do unlimited streams until it reaches 100%, otherwise a consumer card is limited to 1 or 2 streams iirc.

Your biggest issue will indeed be a case that can hold 15-24 drives. I'd personally look for less higher capacity drives to get to the capacity you need. It's better (and usually about the same price) to use i.e. 4x16TB drives versus 8x8TB drives. Less drives means less power and less chance for a disk to go wrong during a rebuild. Especially when the system is actually being moved, less drives is better. You'll also need a beefy PSU for all those spinners.

What kind of capacity are you aiming for? Any particular resilience or performance requirements?

The i5-6500 is significantly faster on single thread than a 4570, but both are kinda slow nowadays.
Minecraft can't utilize a ton of cores very well and mostly wants fast cores.

That 1090T is probably bottlenecked by a low end board without VRM cooling, some people think a $40 board and top end CPU go well together 😄
That or throttling, AMD CPUs of that era throttled between 60-70 degrees already.

8GB is plenty for a single vanilla server.

Thanks for the concern everyone. We are still in recovery mode over here and working with YouTube to get everything restored. Will hopefully have a video (or at least an update on WAN Show) to share with you all ASAP, but we want to make sure we get the details right since smaller channels may rely on our experience to help harden their own security.

As I've posted elsewhere before and HOPEFULLY isn't directly relevant (although I could only imagine the number of FIDO keys required):

Why YSK: Google does not protect against Cookie Hijacking, Authentication Changes via API, and other attack vectors that 2FA/MFA on other sites protect against. If someone steals your cookie, they can change your settings, log you out, and completely hijack your account, even with 2FA/MFA enabled. Only their Advanced Protection (https://landing.google.com/advancedprotection/) option, requiring multiple physical hardware FIDO keys, will protect you against a full account hijacking.

NelizMastr got a reaction from ManemeJeff in Which budget AMD mainboard for the following upgrade?
Lots of old LPX kits were not optimized for AMD. You might need to replace them either way to run 3200 speeds, unless you're willing to overvolt to ~1.4V, which should be fine for DDR4, and the now considered cheap LPX stuff. You might get lucky.

Most B550 boards will suit your needs nicely, I wouldn't opt for anything B450 or older as Ryzen 5000 support simply is a bit spotty on some boards and many boards not having gotten beyond-BETA BIOS updates.

Unraid does offer lots of flexibility as it isn’t actually RAID, but for most home users this is worth the trade off. But, we can’t just tell you exactly what makes sense for you, you sort of have to figure that out on your own… mainly need to identify what your budget is, and what you want out of the nas/server.

If you have an old PC laying around, it’ll work, if not you will need to either build something new or find a used PC - this type of machine can be literally anything made within the last decade. Then you just need harddrives, and how many discs worth of redundancy is up to you. The general recommendation is single disc redundancy is no longer “viable” since the likelihood of losing a second disc while your rebuilding one that already died is actually very much a non 0% chance. Thus, dedicating two drives to parity may be worth it, depending on budget and your tolerance for data loss/down time.

Id suggest reading some unraid threads and how to’s, and watch some YouTube videos. There is lots and lots of info out there, need to just start digging into it and then asking questions where you get confused or have questions.

To be honest, I don't think building a business critical server your company will rely on from parts is going to be a good idea. I don't like whitebox servers; give me a Dell or HPE (or even a SuperMicro) with a hardware warranty, preferably with on-site service with turnaround times measured in hours.

If you're going to have local hardware, and you don't have a dedicated IT person, you really want a managed service provider to be able to support it for you. (Especially if IT infrastructure is well outside your wheelhouse.) Otherwise, they whose idea it was to set up the newfangled thing gets the blame and burden of fixing it when it breaks.

If you have a reliable, fast Internet connection, I'd look into a cloud based hosting solution like Google Workspace or Office 365. They'll be accessible anywhere, and they're a relatively low operating expense in the scheme of things.

At the very low end, a Synology NAS will give you a turn-key local file sharing appliance that's pretty straightforward to set up.

You probably can install esxi on the host, then pass the disk to a truenas vm, then use that vm to store the other vms on.

It may not like that… truenas is REALLY meant to be an appliance, it doesn’t like you messing with things.

Why not just run truenas UNDER ESXi? I wouldn’t ever run a hypervisor under truenas, that’s just bass ackwards. But virtualize truenas is pretty standard.

I ran core under ESXi for years, but have since moved to proxmox and have been much happier. Either way, why not flip this around and virtualize truenas?

Keep in mind there are other license foibles involved with Essentials, much like the SBS product that preceded it.

Should've just bought standard instead and conform to the Microsoft licensing scheme. What do you need 64 cores for anyway?
Surely it's going to be a hypervisor as there's no use for a bare metal 64-core server.

I'd install KVM from the Linux command line in SCALE with a web frontend and go from there.

NelizMastr got a reaction from Needfuldoer in How to hook up a remote ftp sever in ZTE F660 router?
Yes and no. FTP and SMB are both unsafe to use across the internet without a proper firewall and IP whitelisting. For a home user, a VPN is preferred.

Exposing FTP or SMB to the wide open Internet is just begging for trouble. If you don't intend on hosting files for the entire world, you want to access it over a VPN connection like Wireguard.
